workaround: I removed all relevant printers in windows client, reset print spooler, I've created new "proxy" printer in cups (set address http://localhost:631/printers/HPc3100), and driver "generate pdf" and in windows I've added this "proxy" printer (with MS Imagesetter driver). Everything seems OK.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

stop your print spooler service and delete all files here > c:\windows\spooler\

then start print spooling service.. and configure your printer again

do not install printer software only install driver...

device mananger / usb printer / update driver / select the location thats all

That hint of deleting printer spool by hand has been helpful for debugging purpouse. By the way, correct path is %SystemDirectory%\system32\spool\PRINTERS\

But there is now USB printer in device manager, maybe because it's network printer :-D

From other posts on several forums and testing with dump printer I guess it's problem in hp driver for CUPS.

EDIT:
With driver Generic-MS Imagesetter and CUPS-PDF "dummy" all work fine and pdf files are created in (on?) the server.
With same driver in windows and HP Photosmart C3100 printer it goes crazy (but with printing from another cups client to cups server printing works fine). By "goes crazy" I mean "add printer" dialog stops responding after selecting driver (window is marked as "not responding"). And then I can see these repeating messages in cups error_log (see above), but no file is in c:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ (it's no suprise, because i guess it sends different message than "print" via ipp). If I stop spooler in "services.msc", "add printer" unfreeze and I can go on adding printer. But If I start "Print spoler", it starts sending same messages in infinite loop again ....

I turned on must verbose debug mode and now this set of messages is in error log repeating each 2 seconds. Messages are in logs even after closing all print dialogs and tools in windows and reseting cups server.

Hi,
is there any one experineced in setting up IPP in windows? I have cups-driven print-server in networks and it works just fine with linux client, but setting it up in windows causing one big headache :-(
What I did?
I selected "new printer",
then "connect to a printer in internet ...", set ip address from web browser http://ip:631/printers/HPc3100
then selected "HP" and "Photosmart C3100"
and then it freezed with "Not Responding"

I googled trick, that guy said he did this and then added that printer via "Local port" ...., ok this worked. But only for a while :-(

In logs on server I can see this:
10.254.0.4 - - [11/Oct/2007:15:50:50 +0200] "POST /printers/HPc3100 HTTP/1.1" 200 75 windows-ext client-error-bad-request

I tried create a class for that one printer, but it didn't help either.
I would appreciate any idea very much. thanks!

Hi,
is there any chance to get this sound card working on windows 2008 ? There is no chance to get offical support from creative.
And i wasn't able to setup working kxdrivers even on windows 2003 :-( If somebody could write little howto how to get kxdrivers work (even on windows 2003). I would be glad for it.
thanks in advance

Hi there,
I'm using linux for several years and i would like learn windows to get some new experineces in IT and ... get better salary :-)

1) I'm little afraid of it, because i have no idea how i can do something like package managment (easy install and automatic updates of whole system) without making own WSUS. Is there something like WSUS with a lot of 3rd party software freely available on the internet?

2) Second thing what could be problem is User Interface. Is there any project what makes windows UI as good as KDE ?

3) And finally can i get any "edu" version? (I'm currently a student, but no chance to get it on my school :-() or maybe free w2k8 beta?

thanks in advance for your replies
and yes, i know my english isn't perfect :-)

pheeror 12 Light Poster

It should work. Doesn't you check content of that variable in some evalution without quotes around it?

pheeror 12 Light Poster

man sed
especially look at -i option
sed -i'' b -e 's/a/b/'

pheeror 12 Light Poster

It's sooo hard to use google
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/ubuntu?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
ubuntu is linux distribution ...

pheeror 12 Light Poster

wireless in VMWare?

pheeror 12 Light Poster

It's same distro, just different installation media. Xubuntu desktop is based on XFCE, Ubuntu on Gnome. Google for XFCE and gnome and find out what is better for you.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Maybe KDE4 (phonon) will take care of this. But it's not generic problem, when it comes to user interface, KDE integration is fantastic, and there is nothing in whole computer world, what could beat it.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

sinjix_media: yup, you have (almost) no experince in this area ("linux desktop"), so your conclusion is wrong. that's all. use exclusively linux on desktop for year and than you (will? - i'm too bad in english :-( ) get answers on all you questions ....

pheeror 12 Light Poster

you are wrong :-)

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Bad luck you have windows on client. Otherwise you can just add -X parameter to ssh and here you go (on windows you have to install X server).

pheeror 12 Light Poster

?! Why don't you install it like anything else? :-D

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Java's SWT or swing or how they call it is the worst user interface you can see nowdays ...

QT/KDE
no doubt

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Yes, but I recommand use router blackbox (which is often based on linux btw) instead.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Now can I use my ipod to transfer music/mp3s etc?

Directly in the best music player in KUbuntu - Amarok.

Do I need antivirus software for linux if so where do I get it from?

No, you don't need av system in linux. In fact, no system needs anti-virus :-).

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Windows is good for server, only if you have to use windows on clients. And you have to use windows on clients only if you have windows-only software (solidworks, photoshop, accounting, office suite,...).
Or if you know nothing about Linux.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

it should work without problem, i have same card

$ lspci -nn|grep -i audio
02:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 [1102:0002] (rev 0a)

If you run something like Linux From Scratch, check if module snd_emu10k1 is loaded (lsmod) and if volume is set for PCM and Master (alsamixer/aumix/kmix). If you use user-friendly distribution it should work out-of-the-box (just start amarok/rhytmnbox/whatever and play something).
Isn't it audio codec issue?
Could you post here exact message what says you sound isn't working?

For testing you can run command like

$ aplay /dev/urandom

And if you will hear something wierd, sound support is on.

But as I said it's suppoused to run right after installation.

iamthwee commented: WWWWWWWWWWWWWooooot, yes you rock!!!!!!!!!!!! +9
pheeror 12 Light Poster

No, Linux support means support in vanilla kernel or at least works out-of-the-box in all mainstream distros. Drivers on CD is (almost) unusable in linux world, becuase of current style of software distribution, don't you think?
I can't imagine how to manage system where i have to care about recompiling and reinstaling drivers from various CDs after every kernel update. What is absolutely transparent proccess user don't have to care about if hardware is native supported by distribution.

PS: sorry for my english :-(

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Post here output of 'lspci -nn|grep -i audio'. I'm on doubt your card is based on 8738 chip.
and imho that card doesn't support linux.
You did mistake with choosing that card (if you run non-mainstream system you have to check hardware compatibility list before buying hardware). But post here output of that command and we can look if that card supports linux.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

iamthweej: If there is a tux mark on that box try change it for another card (on openSuse HCL you can find card you want http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Sound_Cards or http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/).

joeprogrammer: It would be extremely better to use kernel source from distribution, wouldn't it?
If that card has really chip supported by CMI8x38, it is suppoted in opensuse (at least if you manually load module and set volume up).

btw CMI8738 is first card on openSUSE HCL ;-)

pheeror 12 Light Poster

it's live system
just boot that CD and here you go

pheeror 12 Light Poster

unionfs/aufs
look at SLAX distribution
or
use CD for booting only

pheeror 12 Light Poster

If you would use linux as linux not as windows, you wouldn't waste a lot of time with stupid problems like this one .

iamthwee commented: cut the lip you ain't impressing anyone. -2
pheeror 12 Light Poster

now you redirect output of

echo $no | egrep -c '^[0-9]+$'

to file with name (value of) $y
what you want is

y=`echo $no | egrep -c '^[0-9]+$'`

or

y=$(echo $no | egrep -c '^[0-9]+$')

but you have to read some basics of bash scripting

pheeror 12 Light Poster

You can use google, can't you?

jbennet commented: thats not a very helpful comment -2
pheeror 12 Light Poster

bad forum dude

pheeror 12 Light Poster

You can rewrite mbr with fixmbr with no doubt.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

is that soundcard in opensuse HCL?

pheeror 12 Light Poster

run from windows restore console 'fixmbr'

.... why are you asking in linux forum?

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Now how do I get g++ and gcc?

You wouldn't guess it, but it's in official opensuse repository.

iamthwee commented: Don't be smart. -2
pheeror 12 Light Poster

what a stupid provocation

pheeror 12 Light Poster

use -i parameter for sed
#i'm not csh user
sed -i "s/$stringa/$stringb/g" $filename
#and test if you have to make quoutes around $filename to
#if it doesn't help, try echo $stringa and $stringb before sed

pheeror 12 Light Poster

Hi,
best way is (works only for integers)

declare -i no
read no
if [ $no = 0 ]; then
echo "user enter 0, nothing or not number"
else
 echo "here you go"
fi

or if you want to use regexp

read no
if [[ "$no" =~ /^[.0-9]{1,}$/ ]]; then
 echo "or something like this"
fi

*How do you install it?* From CD media?

PS: Why FC5? There is FC6 now, and FC7 i s going to be released at May.

pheeror 12 Light Poster

My favorite Live distro SLAX can to it too. I used ntfs-3g to transfer gigs from and to ntfs partition without problem(ACL was lost, of course).
