The idiots at work found another WIn98 CD that was bootable, and now problem solved, but not really. There are no drives available for this machine running 98 so the video looks crappy, etc.
I asked who was the idiot who bought these laptops without floppy drives (especially for this purpose) nobody wanted to admit to it.

My company bought some new Sony laptops without floppy drives, and they want to install Win98 on them (for software compatability reasons). But the Win98 CDs are not bootable CDs. They tried to connect a USB floppy to the computer, but it only gets recognized after WinXP has loaded.
My question is: Can a bootable Win98 CD be made?

Thanks for the info. I have a box full of video cards, so if there are any incompatibility problems, I will just try various cards until it works. I also obtained a couple PentiumPro towers so maybe I should trash the p-75 stuff and use those instead.

One of my companiies recently dumped a bunch of Gateway Pentium-75 computers, and I was wondering if it was worth it to put Linux on then and network them together. Which Linux distribution should I use? I have RH 5.2 & 6. The computers have an 800M HD, but I can throw a 6.4G into one of 'em and make it a server if that would work better. Any ideas?

I dunno, maybe it's because you are so smart?

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

Well, then maybe you should change your color scheme to help out us old folk who can't see so well. :-)

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

C'mon, now, I am telling you is wasn't highlighted before, but if you believe that it was, so be it.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

Yeah, but before it was not highlighted, now it is.

What link? I don't see nuthen.

I have no problem opening the case up, but this is a secret project at work, and too many nosy people will ask questions if I start opening up computer cases around the place, so an external solution is the best idea for now.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

Thanks for all of your help. An internal PCI card would be the easiest solution, but this project is for my computer at work, and it would be a temporary project just to test some stuff out, and not a permanent thing, so I dont wanna hafta open up the computer to install stuff, and then open it up again to remove the PCB.

Hello, I am looking for an adapter that converts a parallel port on the computer to a USB port. I see plenty of the ones that work the other way around, e.g. convert a USB port into parallel for use with printers.
A serial port to USB port is an alternative solution for my problem .
If either exists, let me know mfr & model, I would be grateful.

Restarting the computer would be smaller than a NOP?

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

This is an Enteprise edition of XP, so there is no restriction on the # of installs.
CSCGAL, you know I don't use and warez or pirated softare! :-)

Microsoft WindowsXP activation is Microsoft's way of making sure that their software is only installed on one computer and only one computer. It forces you to activate (or register) your software once it was installed, at which time it sends information about your hardware profile to Microsoft.

Maybe your version forces you to do things you don't really want to do, but my version didn't ask for, or force me to do anything, or even go online.
PS: I have about 6 PCs with this XP on it no problem.

This tread is quite timely because I am currently evaluating some 'el cheapo' webcams. I will try to get another one of the same model as one of the ones that I already have, and will see if two of the same model can be easily distinguisehed by various webcam software.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

Microsoft WindowsXP activation? I'm sorry, I don't know anything about that. :-)

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

So you're saying each webcam has its own embedded serial number?
Possibly this info can be transmitted over the internet, and this would raise some privacy issues in much the same way the Pentium serial number scandal did.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

I would think that each webcam would have to be from a different mfr., otherwise how do you tell one from another?

The monitor won't explode, but it sounds to me like you need a new one. It is not really worth fixing. Sme of the possibilities of what is going on: weak HOT, internal arcing/shorts on the flyback, X-ray prot. circuit failing.
You are better off with a new monitor.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

How's the video card? If it is not sending the appropriate H&V drive signals to the monitor, the monitor will go into sleep mode.

whipaway 1 Junior Poster Team Colleague

Monitors have a degaussing coil built in, which eventually should restore your colours back to normal. If not, MCM Electronics sells a degaussiing coil that TV techs use to restore the colours on a crt.

If this problem exists for a lomg time, then perhaps the metallic chassis inside the monitor has become magnetized, and this will require disassemblt in order to effect a cure.

Maybe you should check out some LCD screens?

I get the same message.

If you are able to locate another identical drive (ebay maybe?) that is operational, you can try to swap the electronics from the good one over to the bad one amd see if you can get it to work so that you can get your data. This would work as long as there is no damage to the platters or heads internally.
