it depends what you are opening the file with, the default windows picture viewer does not play .Gif, try right clicking the image and selecting "open with" and from that menue choose internet explorer.

you may be having a graphics card error, as you navigate with windows you may not be dumping your cards cach, as a result after a while it fills up and crashes, try updating its driver, post if it still dosent work
