I have a PC and would like to know how you did it. Can you give me the steps. I have a PC, can you add a MAC OS to it I have Windows 7 now. Please let me know how to do it. I would appreciate it.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

YES I DID ON MY OWN, WOW IT WAS A CHALLENGE LOTS OF FRUSTRATION AND REBOOTS, AND TRY AN ERROS, BUT FINALLY GOT IT DONE, AND THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS.
iMike.

So be a fair guy.
HOW DID YOU DO IT?.
I would be interested.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

But Paragon Partition Manager and install Windows 7 then Windows XP then Windows VISTA (if you are too drunk to remember it is not as good as Win XP or Win 7) Lol You add a partition and install what you want but each partition is like a new PC and you MUST install all of your programs on each OS.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

check to make sure you are going to be able to get windows xp drivers for the devices in the laptop before you go to far !

VERY SMART caperjack,
I have aHP VISTA only Laptop. No drivers on their site and anywhere else and HP tells you that it is a VISTA only OS PC. But then came Win 7.
I wanted to return it until I installed Windows 7. I am an XP lover. I hate the way VISTA had the menue but I lived with it Win 7 on the other hand took my CLASSIC FOLDERS AND MENUS. (Down with BILL GATES)

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I have a Microtek V6UPL. It says that it is able to run in Vista but it was recognized in Win 7 and them failed and could not find a scanner.
I think it is still gates' fault. All of the drivers should work on older scanners and printers. He should know that and Microtek and HP are pretty known scanners, so NO excuse Bill!

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Why Gates? Its not his fault that HP has not upgraded their software yet. They have had at least a year to get it done.

Hope Santa listened.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Anyone having problems getting their old scanner working with Windows 7 ?

I just installed 7, trying to get my HP Laserjet 3050 scanner running is a nightmare.

Any recommendations ?

Do a dual boot to the old OS or check the company's website for drivers. When all else fails curse Bill Gates and buy a new scanner.
Lol

If I had Win XP and now installed Windows 7 and have deleted Windows.old (Windows XP) can I resize and put a new partition of Windows XP or does it have to be first in the chain? Will PArtiton Manager allow me to have Windows 7 and then XP or is it the other way?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I can only use Windows 7 but not XPMode. You asked if I was using Virtual PC in Windows XP and the answer is no. I tried the Visualization in Windows XP and the same holds true. I have no AMD-V or INTEL-VT setting in any of my desktops. I have it in my 2 year old Laptop but I can NOT get it to go from VISTA to XP. HP Pavilion's are engineered for VISTA drivers only. I called the HP Support and all of the forums confirmed it so I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. Thanks for your help, we are on the same page now.

Nope, the BIOS controls the motherboard, mostly. Your chipset AND your BIOS has to support it. Generally though, if you have a chipset which supports it, the BIOS already does.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Okay, Thanks
If I update the bios will that update the processor or no buy a new one?
I have so many questions that are answered here, so I ask a lot. Hope you don't mind????

You can use other virtual PC software, I believe. You just won't be able to use Windows 7's virtual PC software since it relies on that processor support for hardware virtualization. In other words no, you will not be able to use XP mode without getting a processor which supports hardware virtualization.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

So you mean that without a new CPU I can NOT use any V emulation software to do the job?

Do you mean the Windows 7 XP mode? In order to use that, you need a processor that supports hardware virtualization, your mobo really has little to do with it. There aren't very many out there right now that support this, so you might have trouble without getting a new processor.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I can not use Virtual PC because my hardware cmos settings can not turn it on and it is not compatible. Is there a Virtual Drive Box SUN or anything that can use a emulation so I don't have to buy a new mobo?
Any help?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

What is weird? I was told at Tom's Hardware that the uper and lower filters have to be deleted. I will let you know.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

No, No, No, you have it wrong I can see the C and D drive in the Windows explorer NOT in the Computer Management/Disc Management section of Admin Tools. In Disc Management it shows only my E drive which is my terabyte for storage.

not sure what you mean but ,
when i installed it created a windows.old folder in the root of C:\If you go to mycomputer and double click on the harddrive icon, thats the root of c:\, the windows.old folder it there!

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I thought so. An old folder is good I did that and had all of the files and settings in the Documents and settings folder. I then trasfered the my documents to documents and have DVDs but did not need them. One bummer in another persons suggestion.
In Admin Tools there is no C: or D: and it shows all files in the Windows Explorer. It only shows my E: drive which is my storage drive. C and D Drives are my boot drive and the HP System partition to restore back to XP. Nah NO HAPPENING. Any help? Anyone who reads this. Who turned it off in Admin......Disc Management.......NOT ME!

i have only installed a few time so far but you know i think it dos if it finds a windows installed it will create a windows.old folder with all the files

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Thanks for your input I really am grateful to many of you on this site. JHolland for one.

you sure are full of questions .lol ,
win vista and win7 will shrink the drive for you, go to disk management, in control panel, admin tools and you can do it there, just right click on the drive and chose your options .
careful when loading win7 that you chose the correct partition

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Can you reformat and shrink the partition so you can make it one drive?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Can I delete that partition and use the whole drive again?

What program do you use to shrink the partition? Is it FREE?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

What program do you use to shrink the partition? Is it FREE?

You could go into the RC shrink the partiton to as small as it will go, create a new partiton and install win 7 to that new partition. It would depend on the size of your hard drive weither or not this option is viable.

You should be able to assume ownership of some files from your RC install like videos music etc and transfer them to the new install of win 7. You will have to install the programs again though.

You could then format the partiton and reuse it. Personally I have a partiton for MEDIA so if I reinstall windows it's still there, it also saves space if you have multiple operating systems.

This is an alternative to caperjack's suggestion. Backing up is always a good idea anyway.

- let us know how it goes.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Adamsappleone:
This is the result on how to geek's method...........

Windows 7 Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Iget the clean install I make my own PC's and repair them. I just thjought that as before, if I reinstalled Windows over Window it just destroyed the registry settings but installed over the C:\Windows\ directory and left all other files and folders in place. Guess not, they messed up the transition from XP to Win 7 for millions thansk BILL GATES you you make millions messing up millions. Par for his course.
Thanks for your info.
Jim

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Well I am more confused and so I will have to use a clean install. Will it remove the partition or will it just leave the files and Iwill have to reinstall everything but it does not reformat?
The reason it makes a difference to me for it to be or not to be a Media Center is that there are other programs that came witht the Pc for MyDVD and so on that will be wiped and they are on the restore discs which you can not use. Did I say it better so you understand why it matters to me? Otherwise I have to BUY a similar program. BUY being the key word.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I am told that you can upgrade Windows 7.0 RC to Windows 7.0 Final version.
I only see an upgrade to Ultimate is there a workaround to go to Windows 7.0 Professional.
I have a HP Pavillion a1410n Desktop and it came with XP the restore discs are XP.
I have Win 7 RC installed and all is well but it is a MEDIA CENTER version and if I do a sustom or clean install I will loose all of the other programs.
HELP!

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

The Beta will autodestruct on a certain date. i.e. stop working. On present M$ plans, you have to set everything up again.

I wouldn't bother with the beta for that reason.

I thought so. I reformatted months ago when the final beta came out. It is a shame that if you buy it you have to pay full price and they want you to beta test it. Then so now that you are more experienced and have your system all setup they tell you that on June 26, 2010 it is back to square one and FORMAT C\. They are very discouraging.
So I put VISTA back on and have never had a problem on my HP Pavillion laptop so I am not upgrade. And why should I ? They did nothing for me and I tested it for free for them.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Do you still use the beta version...

Of course not. I just thought Microsoft would have come up with a way that if you $BUY IT$ you should be able to turn the Beta into a full version. I guess their programmers are not so up to speed. :)

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Is there any way to convert Windows 7 Beta when it comes out to the full copy If you have everything running perfect. After you buy a number will it convert it or do you have a to take a good running OS and reformat it?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

When I start a You Tube or any Video clip I get Video and NO AUDIO.
The Volume is up to the top and no sound. But. ITunes works perfectly, so there is sound.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

I lost my icon in the system tray and have the box checked. It does nothing. Is there a section in the registry to fix this?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

go to msconfig and take the check mark out of the block related to it. " The computer Man "

I did not say.Oooooooops....I do not see anything related to it but will turn off all HP related stuff and see what happens. But, I saw nothing that said QUICK PLAY. Thanks I will let you know.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

How do I turn off the Video Program that comes with my new laptop. It is QUICK PLAY. It goes on immediately when I insert a disc. I want to do myself.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Sorry if this has been asked before .....
I want to explore W7 but not try and use it as my base OS - happy to stay with Vista for the moment.
Can I set up a separate partition or whatever, install W7 into that and then, at startup, choose which OS to use?

Excuse my ignorance

I did install Windows 7 on my laptop HP9720US.
I took it off only because you have to reinstall windows to get rid of the Beta version and start clean. A virtual drive I am told is the way to go.
Go to Microsoft Virtual drive or find one here on the internet. Then your VISTA is still up and running.
I downloaded Windows 7 RC but have not tried it yet. I have a friend that used Windows XP and added Windows 98 as a test and it worked.
NOTE: ALL new HP's are engineered for VISTA only, so to move up to Windows 7 should be perfect.
Good luck.

Anyone find the same thing?

I fixed it myself by using the next BETA release and it was back to normal.

You dont get credit if you mark your own thread as solved

Moderators dont get credit if they mark a thread solved either, regardless of whether they made it or just replied in it.

You DO get credit for replying to threads which the original poster marks as solved though.

Thanks
Jim

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

they were referring to a professional data recovery company ,not software!

Thanks, I have a friend who tried Hard Drive Mechanic and it did not work probably, for the same reason a dead drive and/or a virus hit the firmware.

Very knowledgeable group on this site in all of the threads I have started or joined.

One question. I clicked that two or three of mine were done and I have no credit showing that I solved any???!!!??? Any clues as to what happened after it accepted my solving a thread? Anyone?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Thanks Salem. At least I know now that unless I wanted to pay for professional data recovery (which I understand is expensive) the drive is DEAD. / Still curious if malware might have corrupted the firmware. / I have a forensic level data recovery program, but assume that will not recognize the drive either.

I hope you get your problem solved.
I have a question what is the professional data recovery software do you have and do you share?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

fdisk will not do ,the drive is dead ,not readable anymore!read the links in Salem's post

OK I guess he knows. :)

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

OK - guess I need to be more explicit. When installed as the only drive, bios boot screen shows primary drive as 'Rigel', not as 'Maxtor 5T060H6'. Bios set up says 'no drive found'. If I manually set up drive with sectors/heads etc info off the drive, it is still not recognized by bios at startup. / What I believe happened is some hacker or malware found its way onto the drive and overwrote the eprom built into the drive. Else why would it think it was 'Rigel' instead of 'Maxtor 5T060H6'. I don't know how or if this was done, but that is what it appears happened. / BTW Maxtor install software also identifies the drive as 'Rigel' & doesn't install, reformat or anything except say 'no drive connected'. / So I'm wondering if anyone else ever encountered this problem, and if there is some low level drive software that can reprogram the eprom (or whatever - I understand it may be a low level program on the drive that was overwritten. I have some old dos programs for low level formatting of hd, but suspect there is something more up to date that _might_ restore the drive to functionality. Any suggestions welcome.

I asked you IF YOU FDISKED THE DRIVE That is an old DOS program to delete the partition and then redo the drive as it was when it was created. Some manufacturers make drives for other companies and may have changed the name.
I have …

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

On other thing try checking your MOBO updates of the BIOS. The firmware on the MOBO (MOtherBOard) may need updating.
Just I always check everything.

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Bios does not recognize hard drive - Hard drive appears as 'Rigel' rather than as Maxtor 5T060H6. Apparently some hacker got to it. Any way to re-program it?

Did you FDisk it ? That should allow you to delete the current partition and hopefully fix it as a new drive.
Good Luck.

CHKDSK=CHECK DISK
NOVICE or ASLEEP?
Sorry but that is a DOS COMMAND around since 1980. I tend to think that everyone would know that by now. :-) Lol
How old are you? I have been doing computer stuff since 1989.
When you can go to the RUN command on your Start Menu.
Type 'CMD' and hit enter.
You will get a lookalike DOS screen.
Then Type HELP/?
You should go to a list of common commands with their description.
You want to then type 'CLS' which wikk clear the screen and type CHKDSK/F or just CHKDSK and see what happens. It should check your hard disk and tell you it can only finish when you reboot so DO NOT have any programs open.
Let me know.

Hi all
Every time my computer stays idle for a little while, I have a message saying " error disk...press ctl.Alt.Del. to restart" Why does it do that? But still does not start

The Pc shows regularly also the error: 0X000000F4...blue screen with a ping square. Is this real bad?

and 9 out 10 pc will not start. BRRRRRR. IS it time for a new one?

HAve XP Service pack 3 installed. 1gb of RAM , CpU 3.15GHtz
Can someone tell me what could be done. Thks all of you for your help and your site.
Pegi

One more question:
Are you using Partition Magic?

DaniWeb4Jim 47 Junior Poster

Try a few of these site and see if you can get help.

error disk...press ctl.Alt.Del. to restart

What is the complete message? Without the dots after disk...????

Did you do a CHKDSK? You may have a BAD HARD DRIVE, CHKDSK will tell you that.

You could also try changing option in the BIOS to defaults (or "optimized default" if this is an option) first.. if this works, then great. note that sometimes defaults are to boot from CD or a floppy first, so if this is the case, change the boot order to have the hard drive go first.

Why did you pick that service, Jim? And isn't it a vista service, anyway?
Have you tried making a new account on the puter to see if the svchost error occurs inside it? I note that error listed in SDFix...

I DID NOT do anything, I was crazy trying to get rid of the message and could not get rid of it until my IT Department friend told me about it.
