Sounds like a driver issue since this occured right after a restore. look for updated drivers, and go by the serial number of the drive.

Thanks Dogbreath?
I resolved the problem by doing a full HD recovery, using the supplied recovery disk with my latop. There were issues there as well, but at last everything is sorted out.

Yep. One would almost think that it would pay security companies to pay folks to write malware to keep the circle going. But they don't have to do that, there are enough misfits and individuals who do it for pay and pleasure. Anyway, it is a good argument for using free AV services.... there is not incentive then... :)

Thanks Gerbs. Everything is now squared away and shipshape. I followed the advice of younger smarter person in my family and since then, my laptop is running better than new. And thanks to all those who contributed, lets mark this one as case closed.
Thankyou

Hi puddlejumper,

The product will still work after your subscription expires, but you will be warned continually that your definition files and program files are not up to date and that you should renew your subscription.

Also, you will not be fully protected against the latest threats, as there are many new threats detected by Symantec every day, which is why the definitions are updated every 5-15 minutes. You will also no longer receive any program updates when your subscription expires.

Thanks,
Mike

Ok, now I know people will think I'm dumb. But I'm still new at this Internet crap (two months!). To renew my subscription, you mean I have to pay again? I mean I paid almost ninety bucks for the software in the first place, it's only good for year??? That is the craziest, money grabbing scheme I've ever heard of. In my mind, something that you pay that kind of money for, should be good enough for at least a few years, so five or so. Now if I have to RENEW my subscription next year, what is it going to cost me? The same price as my original software purchase?

I am just graduating and about to do online classes at Phoenix University. What are the rewarding IT fields. I am leaning toward information technology and information technology/network. Right now i just want my AA degree. Any help would be appreciated please list salary and degree.

Hi justinfb.
Phoenix..mmm, would that be Arizona? Anyhow I just thought I'd let you know from down here in OZ, my daughter did an IT and Physics degree here at Sydney U. After graduation she worked at a couple of large corporations and found it soooo boring. In the end she joined the Royal Australian Navy, officer entry. After five years now she's loving it and has just recently been advised she'll be eligible for promotion soon to Lt. Cmdr. The pay isn't as great as in civvy life and I expect the US forces to be much the same. But in her short time, Keira has visited the US twice, Malaysia, the Persian Gulf (onboard her current ship) and most of Asia. Her position in the Navy is a Electronics Warfare Officer (EWO), But with there are a number of fields you can expect to be qualified for, especially with the Air Force or Marines. Hope this helps you out.
Puddlejumper.
P.S. Though the pay is not large by civilian standards, it's still reasonable and in the Navy, you can save heaps.

puddlejumper 3 Newbie Poster

True. So if you only get hit by old viruses, you're laughing.
Avast. I depend upon it.

Thanks gerbil, my daughter says the same thing, she uses her HP laptop aboard a Navy sub and has all sorts of problems through the ADF network. Since she downloaded Avast, in conjunction with Registry Easy, Keira claims she has had nothing but smooth sailing***(pardon the pun).

Hi puddlejumper,

You do have the option of purchasing a 2 year subscription from the Norton website as well, which will save you some money over a 1 year subscription. Norton Internet Security is created by Symantec Corporation which is a separate company from your laptop manufacturer. There are no computers that come with a lifetime subscription to Norton products.

As I had stated in my previous response, when your subscription expires you will no longer receive product or definition updates.

Since you have purchased the 2009 version of Norton Internet Security, you should definitely install it, as it contains many new and enhanced features over the 2006 version and it is always recommended that you have the latest version installed to keep your computer protected against the latest threats.

Prior to your subscription expiring you will receive a notification in your task bar advising you that you only have so many days left on your subscription. You may also receive an email notification as well. The notification will have a link that you can click on to see what update options are available to you at that time.

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you for your reply Mike. One question and you may think it's dumb, but though I've been using computers for years, with cad-cam and such, as of April this year, it is my first time on the internet. (Please don't ask why, it's a long stupid employer-employee story). So now I'm having to pay for my own …

Hi Puddlejumper,

There are two things I want to let you know about using the older version of Norton Internet Security. First, if your subscription has expired, then you will not receive any more definition updates, which means that you may not be protected against the latest threats.

Secondly, all Norton products are sold on a subscription basis, and as long as you have a valid subscription you are entitled to free product updates for the life of your subscription. You can determine your subscription status by logging in to your "My Norton Account" at the link below.

My Norton Account

If you never signed up for a My Norton Account you can also contact our Customer Service department who can check on your subscription status.

Norton Customer Service

Thanks again,
Mike

I understand. But tell me why, if I pay for a product, the subscription is only for a year. If I reinstall the 2009 package, from my last install it said I have 340-something days left. What happens when it runs out. I can't afford to buy new stuff every twelve months. I'm just a regular worker looking forward to my retirement very soon. This software should be good for the life of my laptop, which for me is going to be quite a while.

Hi everybody.
If y'all will remember my Toshiba A100 "System Restore not working" post, thanks to all involved, my laptop is once again shiny! But there is still one remaining problemo. When I try to use my inbuilt CD/DVD drive, the disk, whether it be music, movies or anything else, just whirls around and does nothing. If I try to force start it from 'my computer/ cd/dvd drive/d' it comes up with an I/O error. Trouble is I know it works, because if you remember I had to do a full HDD recovery, and I could only use the 'D' drive, as the recovery utility would not recognise my external usb 'F' drive. The windows troubleshooter says that the drive is ok. Any help folks?

Hi Puddlejumper,

In regards to what other users say about Norton Internet Security 2009, if you read credible reviews of the product you will see that it has received great reviews and has scored very high overall compared to other comparable security products.

In response to the issue that you were having before you wiped your drive, it appears that your system had some problems prior to the installation of Norton Internet Security. Some infections will disable or corrupt your restore points which is why you were unable to run System Restore. The instructions I had posted about temporarily disabling the Product Tampering in Norton Internet Security is a workaround that is sometimes needed to restore the ability to run System Restore. Also, if critical system files were infected, no security software will be able to resolve that issue. Some Trojan and Worm infections, even if they are removed or quarantined, can compromise Windows in a way that your data will never be secure unless you reformat and reinstall Windows. The use of software the modifies the registry is not recommended as it can cause irreparable harm to Windows and using security software will not remedy the problem.

As to why other security applications found infections that were not detected by Norton Internet Security, this is usually an indication that Norton Internet Security was not installed, updated or functioning properly. Also, having other third-party, real-time security applications installed at the same time is known to cause conflicts, which can lead …

my pc is a compaq presario desktop 6420nx amd athelon running xp home edition. I dont have the disk to reinstall because it came on the pc when i got it. can anyone recommend another way of rolling back to factory settings without the disk? this has got to end!!! i want my pc back and running!!! i dont care about losing files, i just want the thing working again and i have no disk! i put a new hard drive in last april, its been working fine up until last month, what gives?

There are plenty of online instructions as to how to make a recovery CD/DVD. But if your computer is already playing up, this might be difficult. A lot of repair shops in Sydney, will make one for your computer, if the manufacturer won't supply same. The shop folks generally won't charge you much and most I've found to be very helpful, I guess that culture is pretty much the same everywhere. (My daughter had a similar problem with her HP laptop, last year whilst doing a Navy course in the U.S...she went to a local repair shop in Florida where she was staying, and the fellow helped her for free. It might have been the uniform!) Anyhow roz33, ask around where you live, somebody will help you.

Hi twoyorkie,
The problem I had last week with my Toshiba A100, is not all that disimilar to yours. I had a complete disaster and I had no idea what to do. I new my hard drive and cpu were still ok, just the system itself was awry. From the best advice I got, from this forum and other tech people, the ony way to solve these kind of dilemna's is to do a total HDD recovery. But I must point out, that you DO NOT use any of the Windows based recovery media. First of all if you have the manufacturors supplied HDD recovery disk, this is how you must proceed. (If you don't have one, the computer company will supply one for you at a small fee, down here in OZ for example, if I didn't already have mine, Toshiba would supply one for about $15aus).
First of all you insert the disk into a CD drive whilst the computer is on. Then you shut down.
2/ While holding down the 'C' key, press the power button on a continue to hold the 'C' key until the recovery procedure begins. Let it run it's course. Note, on some systems it may be another key, it might be the zero numeric key and others use the 'R' key. This you'll find out from your HDD recovery instructions.
3/Once your recovery has finished, the computer will be back to it's original configuration. A word of warning! …

Jupiter 2- Totally agree with you. Let's wait to hear what Roz33 says next. Rozz if you're reading this and your machine is more than six years old. Dump it; it's not even worth a trade in. (Some stores here in OZ will trade your Laptop if it meets certain criteria, age being one of them and operating system being the other. Anything still on Windows 98 is considered a Dinosaur.)

Hi puddlejumper,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

If you are unable to enable System Restore you may first need to disable the Norton Tamper Protection feature, carry-out the restore and then re-enable Tamper Protection. Please follow the instructions below.

1. Open Norton Internet Security 2009 and select the "Settings" link next to "Computer."

2. Select the "Miscellaneous" tab and then turnoff "Norton Product Tamper Protection." Click the "Apply" and then "OK" buttons.

Next, follow the instructions in the document below to re-enable System Restore.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?OpenDocument&seg=ag&lg=en&ct=us

After you have restored your computer, go back in to Norton Internet Security and re-enable the Tamper Protection feature.

Let me know if this process resolves the issue.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your response. I have been able to resolve the critical issues on my computer by doing a full HDD recovery as I outlined in a post to Rozz33. But it is fortuitous that you joined this discussion when you did. One of the major problems I had after doing the HDD recovery, was that there still some BUG issues effecting my computer. A number of people told me to get rid of my Norton software as it is useless. At first I did not believe them, but after joining Daniweb and reading similar posts to mine, many people said the same thing. So I got my boss to have his technician have a look at my system and he scanned it with …

You will find that those laptop users are using them for online gaming (not gambling, per se), youtube watching. Laptops are not "really" designed for that sort of exertion. And those people are usually aged between 14 and 25.

Also, If it is Dell or Compaq dektop, they ship their computers with minimal PSU output, just enough oomph to turn the computer on. Even on their sites they say "if you upgrade any part or device, make sure you get a 480 Watt power supply." or words to that effect and written in teeny weeny font.

Perhaps Roz33 could just boot to setup CD and just select upgrade?

I collect discarded computers and try to get them working. Sometimes I give them away, for free, but mostly I try to analyse them. I've got about 12 computers almost stacked to the roof, plus the ones I actually use for different purposes. I'm not an expert, just a novice in training.

Yep Jupiter you are right. Dell and Compaq both do the same, for the reason they come off the same assembly line. To anyone considering buying a Laptop, there is only three or four to consider. Although I own a Toshiba and they are good, HP though more expensive, are worth the extra, so that would be my #1 choice; #2 a top of the range Toshiba: #3 Asus would round it out. There is one or two others, but forget Sony. They look good, and perform reasonably well if …

This is for Rozz33 -
I've never done a restore. Never needed to do one. What am I doing wrong? Or perhaps, what am I doing right?

If you are a Gamer, Youtube watcher or do a lot of things with videos then this is your problem.
- Save often. Don't play continuously for more than 2 hours. If it's a low end game then make it 3 hours. Then shutdown and go have a coffee break.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In all your software applications, uncheck or disable "Check for Updates" This includes iTunes. If you have Nero then unselect Nero Scout. Disable Automatic Updates for Antivirus software and Windows Updates. If you prefer not to do this then have it set to "Notify" rather than auto update.

You possibly have insufficient Ram or your video card has insufficient Video memory. You need at least 512 mb Ram and 128mb Video memory. If you are using onboard video then this memory is taken from the Ram.
Your power supply unit should be at least 450 Watt ( assuming this is not a laptop).

Jupy is partially correct, well mostly anyways. But I've found that any game (if that's your thing), post 2005, will only run effectively with 1Gb ram (2 is better) and 256mb on your video card. But Jupy missed your dilemna, your computer is presently "failing to proceed" (as Mercedes drivers say when the junker has broken down). As I mentioned …

I am having a similar problem. It started when windows spontaneously stated it had to shut down due to some error, which by the way flashed to quick for me to read.Next it shut down, I rebooted, it takes like 5-8 hours just to get to splash screen, then there is another billion hour wait(literaly) of black screen, then another life sucking wait for the desktop to show up, then the icons disappear fo-ever and then reappear hours later. the computer is slow, freezing, and unresponsive, I need major help. System restore will not work at all, I get the message 'system restore cannot protect your computer at this time.'then I just hold power button and begin the painful loop all over again, havent been able to use my pc in 2 months.

Hi Roz33
Having just gone through this whole business three times over the last week, the best advice I can give, is that you need to do a full system recovery. If you computer/ laptop came with a HDD recovery disk, you need to do the following.
1/ Insert the disk whilst the machine is on.
2/ Shutdown.
3/While holding the 'C' key, press power on, keep your finger on the 'C' key until you hear an audible beep and the recovery bar begins (It will start at the bottom of your screen.
*Note. Don't bother with the Windows Back up utility, that's what screwed mine up the second time around. Just …

The best way to sort your problem is to get rid of that useless Norton rubbish and put some proper protective software on your pc. I bet your pc is still infected with quite a bit of malware.

Mbam, Superantispyware, and Avast antivirus are all free to use and are far far better than Norton. They can all be found easily with Google.

Yeah, I found out that the Norton is totally rubbish. I did a install of Avast and it found 157 additional bugs. Luckily Noton have a sixty day refund period, I've got another ten days. Anyway, I managed to do a full HDD recovery with the Toshiba HDD recovery disc. It fixed most of my problems except two things. When I open an application such as wordpad or the internet explorer page, the top of the page bar pulsates. Also when connected to the net, I can't type anything, something seems to be interfering with the key inputs. I can type ok when not connected, but I still have that pulsating thingy. Any leads?

I've had a similar problem with my system restore. Actaully it's not been working for a couple of months now. My computer is 2 and half years old, a Toshiba Satelite A100. Up until April of this year it had never been connected to the internet (I couldn't afford it!), but now it is, so to be safe I purchased Norton Internet Security 2009 and Registry Mechanic. Sadly though, neither fixed my problem with system restore, I still get the message after going through the procedure, system restore cannot restore to selected restore point and nothing has been altered on your computer. Also, my computer will not shut down automatically from shutdown, or resart; I've got to pull the power plug and disconnect the battery to get it to shut down. When it restarts, it takes ages.
