I wouldn't be so sure, SP2 brought a performance slump.

XP SP2 drastically changed several parts of the OS security wise, which always brings a performance hit. The tradeoff was worth it though.

Yes, my words to sum up vista would be "rushed, unfinished"

IMHO vista isnt much of an improvement on XP

IMHO Vista is a great improvement, but that's mainly based on the stuff I've heard about how they changed the innards, not the experience itself. I have no complaints against the Vista experience thus far, and I do prefer it to XP, but that's certainly only opinion. I've had no hardware issues on 2 computers thus far (admittedly, I just got one of them last week).

Should I set up an Access database for this menu?
Such as the appetizers, main course... , but leave the prices in an array.
Or should I also set the prices up in a database too.
I will set this up if this happens to be the right way to go and then post back if I
run into any problems. Again I am not asking for anyone to do my
homework for me, just to steer me in the right direction.

Thank you

If you do decide to use a database, keep all the data together or else it would become a mess to keep it all together. Personally, I'd use a SQL Express database, but I'm familiar with SQL and I've not used Access so there's a huge bias there. For something this small, you could just leave it in the code as well.

Because it's not my area of expertise. Judging others intelligence is a hobby of mine though.

how do race or "other variables" affect your results? :D

I don't agree at all with the statement that because black people typically do worse than white people in education then psychologically they tell themselves education isn't important. Completely ignoring the first half of that statement, where is your proof of what other people are thinking?

I agree. Just because they perform at a lower level doesn't mean that they discount the value of education. And like I mentioned before, it can be difficult for them just to level the playing field; that certainly affects their performance.

Secondly ... to respond to AD's latest post, women are more successful in college than men simply because women mature faster. In our late teens/early twenties, we have our heads on straighter and care more about our studies and schoolwork than 19 year old guys, who typically want to party and aren't spending all their time thinking ahead about the future and how their school grade affects future careers. Our male counterparts simply settle themselves down a few years later when grad school comes around, at which time the roles get reversed and it's the guys who go on to grad school to obtain professional degrees (or at least, it's my opinion that there are more male professionals than there are women professionals). All just my own hypothesis, mind you.

Interesting perspective. I hadn't thought …

*Disclaimer* This is just a theory that seems to fit the evidence and statistics I posted. Do not label me a hick/racist/redneck. I am in fact a college student who scored in the 95th percentile on the SAT, was ranked at the top of my class, and who is currently at the top of my engineering class... and my IQ is a 135.

All that shows is that you are an smart and educated hick/racist/redneck. Intelligence is no excuse for racism nor does it prevent racism.

++
That paragraph was a blemish on the post.

Anyway, I have done research and my results are the following:
Black people have an average IQ score of 85 as opposed to whites averaging 100, and Asians average 107. These differences do not appear to be based on environmental factors either:
"Race differences show up by 3 years of age, even after matching on maternal education and other variables," said Rushton. "Therefore they cannot be due to poor education since this has not yet begun to exert an effect."
http://www.scienceblog.com/cms/node/7669
http://serc.carleton.edu/introgeo/earthhistory/humanrace.html
Prior to 1973, when the AAMR changed the definition of mental retardation, 45% of all black Americans were officially classified as retarded.

Using the IQ of 3 year olds seems a little, well, meaningless. I'm curious as to how they matched the "maternal education and other variables" and what the other variables were.

Also, I have found that crimes in America are mostly committed …

Insanity: Microsoft changing the operating system and programs every three years.

How is that insanity?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

True. On the other hand, the Mac community is stereotypically middle to upper class and/or working professionally from their computer. This makes a workable exploit still profitable, especially if stealing IP is involved. For instance, I recall hearing (from an industry source, not the media) about an exploit in Photoshop on OSX only that would upload the user's projects to a server owned by the exploit authors. This only affected a very small population (people using that version of PS on that version of OSX) so it wasn't publicized - which might also allow the exploit to live longer - and the payoff was a bunch of potentially valuable content.

A windows virus has the potential to have larger global effect, which makes it more desirable for short term use (e.g. DDoS) or for building a bot net (like Storm). If it gets well known, it will be blocked by AV products sooner than later and the virus will be less successful, plus if the media talks about it, then people will [hopefully] know how to avoid getting it or how to get rid of it.

[edit:] another thought: Apple doesn't want publicity about OSX exploits, as it will damage the "safer than Windows" image of their product. Also, a good many Windows-specific exploits are for Windows-specific software but not the OS itself. Having the OS hardened can prevent a lot of exploits from running, but they'd break compatibility with most software. The end-user usually isn't willing to …

doubt it. Windows CE based devices have been out for nearly 10 years and there are no known viruses. Is the iPhone UNIX based?

I'm sure there's gotta be some viruses out there, they just never made the news. Kinda like a lot of the Mac-targeted viruses up till fairly recently. Not newsworthy enough, so no publicity, so nobody realizes they exist.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The iPhone does run some sort of minimal OSX install, which makes it prone to many of the exploits released against the Mac platform, especially where Safari is concerned. Pretty sure there's been a couple exploits found on the iPhone that were previously not found on OSX.

sucks to be canadian. americans have it easy, just one class and a test and you're done.

Varies by state. Here in WA, if you're under 18 you have to have at least 50 hours logged with a parent or other licensed adult over age 23, at least 6 months with a permit (which requires said other passenger, but this way you can't get the permit and never use it), then take written and driving tests. Then after that there's still restrictions that have fairly tough consequences when broken (e.g. you can't have friends in the car for 6 months unless an adult is present, getting a ticket loses your license for like 6 months, etc...)

It wasn't meant to be insulting, and from the sounds of it I wouldn't call you 3rd world anyways. If you're runing Home Premium, then your computer is obviously fairly up to date. The next windows server (not longhorn, the one after) will be 64 bit only so we can assume that the next desktop windows, or the one after that, will be 64 bit only too

It's still largely based on the x86 architecture, and still a huge mess. The only reason x64 has been able to make its way into the market is because of the compatibility. And some clever marketing, which makes people think that 64-bit will improve performance. Really, I'd hesitate to call them different architectures; x64 is more like a desperately needed upgrade from x86, which in turn was an upgrade from 16-bit, etc... I'd point out the Itanium architecture, now only seen in commercial servers, which has a vastly improved architecture. It was originally created to take over the PC market and at that it managed only to belly flop... hard. Switching to it would have required re-tooling almost the entire software industry, and so it only fell into a …

Why not help make some of these places better places to be? One poster said it himself; mexico is crap.

Aside from the political and economic reasons not to, the US does give a lot out. There are many, many non-profit organizations that do improvement projects overseas, and the US government gives out a ton of aid every year (enough so that some people at home would rather see the money put to use cleaning our own country first). Unfortunately, a lot of those funds end up going through corrupt government channels, and the aid never reaches it's intended destination or purpose. If you'd prefer, the US could go around and depose all the corrupt governments guilty of this, but somehow I think the rest of the world would frown on such action.

i also object to the fact that microsoft have basically given people no choice but to upgrade. That and you have to buy bussiness or higher to be able to run it as a virtual machine or in boot camp on a mac.

Forcing people to upgrade is a very difficult process with computers. If it were easy, the x86 architecture would be long dead and only remembered as "that horribly designed assembly we used to use." For Windows, Microsoft is starting to force people to upgrade for similar reasons: there's some really crappy designs in XP and older versions, things that really need to be cut even if it means sacrificing compatibility. Several of those issues have to do with security models in the OS, which is obviously important.

As to the hardware requirements, while it's an unpopular move, the effort is meant so that people who can afford a nicer computer will also get a nicer OS. People who can't will get a less costly OS. This is really similar to a car, if you think about it. Example with Toyota's line: you could buy a Lexus (Vista Ultimate), or a Camry (Vista Home Premium), or a Corolla (Vista Home Basic), or a bicycle (Vista Starter). The bicycle seems like a total ripoff, but it's targetted at 3rd world countries, where even a little bit is a good thing. Of course, with the typically falling prices for hardware, even Vista Ultimate will run on what the average …

I wonder if theyll make SP3 acrappy security rollup like they did for 2k or if it will be a proper new-feature SP like SP2 was

The point of a service pack is to put a bunch of important updates together. Critical security updates are delivered as soon as they're available, but functionality fixes are almost always either put into the service pack or pushed back till the next release. SP3 will probably be more security or functionality fixes, but I don't really know anything about what they're doing with it...

I agree with MidiMagic, the name calling is very immature! Most countries in Europe take about 50% taxes from you, and people have gotten used to it. For that we get free healthcare too!

And while it seems to work decently in Europe, I don't see it working well in the US for several generations. Our culture is just too different for that, and a lot of people probably don't trust the government to actually provide decent services (of any sort...)

Wrong. You are confused. I suggest you research the different economic models.

I know nothing of economics or the theory behind it, but I'd expect someone with a minor in the subject to have some idea of what they're talking about. Where's your credibility coming from, Josh? Or did I miss it somewhere in the "No, you're wrong go look it up" argument so prevalent in this forum?

That's NOT creating wealth. That's unbalancing markets so it looks like there is more wealth.

Creating money and creating wealth are two different things. Only work can create wealth.

..and may I ask, what is your definition of 'wealth' ?

Making money has never equated to making wealth. Wealth is a relative measurement of one party's assets to another party's; the party with more is the wealthier of the two. Making wealth, then, must occur from a means of acquiring assets. If we assume a constant amount of currency in circulation, then this only occurs in transactions between parties.

haha.. well you kinda have to hate apple since you work for MS :P

With the abundance of iPods and iPhones around the office, I assure you that such is not the case. Really, there's very little hate against any company in general, whether it be Apple, Adobe, or anybody else.

Apple products just generally suck ass.. the only reason they are still in business is b/c microsoft doesn't give a damn.. they aren't a threat b/c microsoft's biggest customers are the businesses.. and no one in their right mind would use macs for their business.. also, if microsoft put apple out of business, then the damn liberals would charge them with monopolizing the industry (again). Apple's hardware products (e.g. Macbook, iPod, iPhone) are typically decent with the exception of their price tag. They're selling their name attached to the product, and I just want the frickin' hardware to work nicely regardless of the name attached. And they do have a pretty nice design.

No, you are obviously having a difficult time understanding. Humans are not perfect. We do not have an infinite capacity to learn. If we did then it would be possible to learn everything, which it obviously isn't. Look at it this way, humans can learn and develop knowledge. The graph of human knowledge with respect to time is an exponential similar to y=ln(x)...

While I won't disagree with the model, I do disagree with the argument. True, one human cannot possibly learn everything. However, as a whole, the human race can, if possible and given enough time, record a near infinite amound of data. This will largely be boosted by specialization of education (and through that, research efforts). This way, while a single person's knowledge curve may plateau as they age, the combined sum of knowledge can still grow in a manner correlated with the size of the contributing population.

Taking this another step, with our recent efforts in combining knowledge (e.g. the Internet), it is now also very easy for humans to quickly amass informations and attempt to determine relationships between them, possibly creating new information. It is also possible for someone, I'll use myself as an example, who has little or no knowledge of a certain subject, say, the pre-cellular (aka plain old) telephone system to quickly find and digest some information on the subject. The information, being stored externally to my imperfect human brain, can then be discarded from my memory if no longer …

Back on the original topic... I've heard that the blocks of a solid state drive are good for like 10,000+ write operations, so they'll likely last a decently long time (longer than the two months it takes for your laptop to be outdated), and the power usage is a bit lower. Also, seek times are much shorter (since there isn't a mechanical factor), so reading data is really fast. Write speeds are slower, but still faster than hard disks I think...
