minwin is not a total rewrite - its a modular NT kernel. (hence the increment of 1 major version)

They are splitting up the components of it so e.g the graphical server isnt a part of the main kernel to prevent a GUI crash taking out the system

Yeah, they are finally doing it proper IMHO. It is a fairly drastic change from the traditional monolithic OS that Windows has been for so long though. I have high hopes for newer releases.

and sp3 doesnt bring anything new apart from NAP which will not make any difference to 99% of users. Some have reported a small performance boost of under 10%.

SP3 is more of a rollup than a feature release

SPs are not supposed to be feature releases, they are intended to be rollups of existing hotfixes and new patches, as you've well described. XP had major security defects and SP 2 ended up including several architectural changes; however, such an event is a rarity. Amazing how after one outlier, a new standard has been set...

wont it be SP3 Jbennet? Are you actually getting rusty?

Correct, SP3 will be out fairly soon.

It's really too bad that Microsft does not have any major (or for that matter even minor) competition. You would think that there are enough smart folks out there that could dream something up that is better for the average consumer.

Minor competition: Mac OS, Linux, Unix.

With 'better' I mean friendlier, less annoying, leaner, with intelligent security build in. I don't even ask for cheaper.

Unfortunately, the main roadblock to that is money. Building an OS isn't cheap in the slightest, and making it secure is increasingly difficult. Friendlier/less annoying would be nice. Future versions of Windows will be based on MinWin, which will be a much leaner kernel (about 25MB, whereas a skimpy Server 2008 install is about 1.5GB; on the other hand, MinWin doesn't even have a window manager, it's just the kernel). I wonder how well it will play with existing Windows APIs though...

I hear OS X is good, but heck, what do I know? I've never used it. Plus it can't really quite just conclusively be installed on a PC...

Never used it, plus I don't like Apple's products in general. Over-(priced|hyped) for what they really are. Besides, their security record for their most recent release (Leopard) is hardly encouraging.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

About mass transit: the point of mass transit is not to taxi you from point A to point B; rather it's to find a series of points A', B', etc... such that people will be able to make up the difference with their intended route easily. If people weren't scared to walk a little, mass transit can be a very effective system.

On the other hand, there are situations in which mass transit is simply not feasible. In larger cities, (e.g. London, LA, NYC, etc), it works quite well, but I would attribute this to the density of desired destinations (on both ends of the trip). However, in smaller places, like where I live, it's not as effective. We do have public busing, and it does cover a good bit of ground, but it isn't sufficient to replace a car for most families. And then if you were to go out to a rural area, public transit would be either a joke, or a typical government waste of funds.

You are entirely correct in this part. The concept of "owing" something is entirely an invention of our society. However, it's also a requisite to be in our society. If you can't live with the burden of owing somebody what society says is their due, then you are not fit to be in our society.

Who says they don't have the right to break compatibility? It's their product, they can do as they wish. Not good for customer experience, but it's their choice.

I have a 1997 computer that is still in use.

Herein lies the issue: technologically, you're living in 4th world environments. I mean, c'mon dude, stop trying to keep the world in the stone age of computing. Go out, spend a couple bucks, get a new system. And ffs, stop whining about the obvious consequences of your own choice; deprecation happens in just about any industry.

Fix the bugs, but don't change the file structures.

Some of the bugs were based on the underlying architectures, never mind the file formats. And in some cases, yes the format was bad and really was the cause of the problem.

I didn't say they didn't owe Adobe. What I said is that, for the two cases actually possible (because the guy doesn't have $650), Adobe didn't get anything either way:
- The guy does without Photoshop.
- The guy copies Photoshop.

So, in the hypothetical situation that I hire you, and you work for two weeks and then if I refuse to pay you, it's the same thing. I don't owe you, because you didn't get anything either way:
- I did the work myself
- I got you to do the work

When they charge exorbitant prices for software, it causes piracy. $650 is a ridiculous price. They can charge it only because they have an artificial monopoly power created by government. $65 is a more realistic figure, but they want to get more money from businesses and government by demanding a huge price. This forces individuals out of the market, because they can't afford the $650.

I agree, which is why I don't have a copy of Photoshop. Windows is similarly expensive, but it's not as bad when you account for the fact that it comes with a new system. To expound on this, you can get a copy of Vista Home Premium for about $220, or you can get a computer, monitor, printer, for under $400. Sure, it's a cheap one, but it'll probably be fine for the average user.

Why do they need a new version? To FORCE people to upgrade, because they will then change things so the old one won't work anymore. They make you pay just to stay where you are. This is more unjust monopoly power, where Microsoft and the software manufacturers make you pay repeatedly to stay where you were.

Sometimes it's to make you upgrade. Whether it's Photoshop, Visual Studio, Office, or the latest game from Blizzard, their business model is based on you buying their product. Software companies aren't the only ones doing this. Look at car manufacturers. The average car will last well over 10 years, but the average car …

The main reason for enforcing the namespaces is to not pollute the naming scope and to keep the code better organized.

In C, for example, there are neither classes nor namespaces. This means any function has to have a unique name and you can easily end up with a bunch naming conflicts.

In C++, there are classes, which help alleviate a small bit of the problem (as related operations are grouped together), and there are namespaces as well. The namespaces allow you to group classes in a more logical manner. For instance, variations of a vector class can represent a 2D vector, a 3D vector, or an alternative to an array. Since the names for all 3 of these would conflict, with namespaces we can still call each class vector but have them reside in different naming scopes. C++, however, doesn't strictly enforce a namespace structure, so if you create a class named string and put it in the global scope, then it will have a name conflict with any other class named string in the same scope.

C# makes you put your code in namespaces to avoid global type name conflicts. This doesn't totally eliminate the conflicts though, because you can bring whole namespaces into scope with the using clause. When that happens, you need to refer to the classes by Namespace.ClassName to distinguish between them.

I only saw the first little bit of the Democrat debates last night, but they were already poking hard at her and she wasn't keeping very cool. I missed the part AD is referring to, but it doesn't surprise me at all. And I agree that Obama's lack of reliance on the race issue is something to be lauded.

Of the little bit I saw, Obama did impress me the most. Richardson was a self-promoting joke, and the other two were spouting the word change with very actual platform behind it. As one of the Republican candidates mentioned, "change can be for the good, or it can be for the bad." The Democrats can say they're going to change the country all they want, but they better spell out how they intend to do that. Obama seemed the most willing to put down some details. Again, that's just what I saw in a short clip.

As I mentioned before, I voted in this poll for Ron Paul, but after seeing him in action tonight, I was rather disappointed. If I could, I'd change my vote to either Guliani or Huckabee, as I thought they addressed the issues best. The reason this article title caused my impression of her platform to worsen is that it is still simply unrealistic. If you mean using VB 2005 Express, then no you can't make a website (but you can get the Visual Web Developer Express). If you mean in general, then it the answer is "kinda". You can make a web site, which uses ASP.NET to render the front end, but all the logic (e.g. database interaction, binding data to controls, handling transitions between pages) can be done in VB.NET.

- Making a copy is different in one way from stealing a copy from a dealer. When a shoplifter steals a copy of a CD from a dealer, the dealer is out the money he paid the manufacturer for the CD. It is a real monetary loss. But if someone copies the same CD for personal use, nobody has directly lost any money.

This is one of the arguments that bugs me the most. While I can understand the logic you're using, it's still inaccurate. I'll use Photoshop as my example. How many people are honestly willing to spend $650USD so they can dink around with photos on 4chan, or otherwise use the software for a hobby? And yet, how many people acquire a disc or a disc image with which to install and use the software? Adobe's getting none of the payback they deserve for all these users. And while you may also argue that "they're just losing the costs of the install disc and box" you're wrong. They make an investment of thousands (if not millions) of dollars in labor to get a new version out the door. If they aren't able to get back and satisfactory profit from that investment, then they're not going to continue. Ditto with Microsoft. The software industry probably loses billions in profit because of piracy (of course, that does add up quickly with suites costing up to $10k or more). Fortunately, they've so far been profitable enough to continue making - and …

>>Afterall, Red Hat makes about $330 million per year
If they give their software away for nothing then how can they make any money? They have to be selling $330 million worth of something. What that shows is that it is not the open source programs that make money but the spin-offs that are sold for $$$. And the assertion that YOU CAN MAKE MONEY ON OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE. is false. It's not the open source that makes money -- if it was then it wouldn't be open source now would it :) You can't have it both ways -- you can given something away for free and get $$$ for it too.

Getting into technicalities, AFAIK the GPL and most open source licenses don't prohibit selling the software. And Red Hat seems to do well enough selling the support service (though, I don't know how much they've contributed to the software either - the cost of all that development (which in this case was largely mitigated by existing GPL projects) may also be prohibitive to some companies).

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

>If we didn't get paid for our work then there would be no software for you and others to steal.

How many times do I have to reiterate this? Are people just plain stupid? YOU CAN MAKE MONEY ON OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE.

AFAICT, nobody has said otherwise. And they'd be stupid if they did. Afterall, Red Hat makes about $330 million per year (according to google finance). But that's about 60% of what VMware makes, or 5% of what Google makes, or 1.5% of what Cisco makes, or 0.8% of what MSFT makes (all of these based on 2006 or 2007 Gross Profit values according to Google). Which companies do you think pay better? Which company would you rather work for? Which company would you rather own? And yeah, I know you'll say Red Hat, if only because you're an idealist.

On a similar, I probably wouldn't be in software if I wasn't getting the same opportunities and I doubt I'm the only one. You know how many people at my school wanted desperately to work for Red Hat? 0, so far as I know. Google? about 150 (e.g. the whole department). Amazon? probably again about 30 of them. Microsoft? Probably about 40. VMware, Cisco, etc...? Probably around a dozen each.

Someone give me one reason why I shouldn't "pirate" software? Why should I let corporations control my activities and my life?

So, do you "pirate" from the corporation that makes your clothes? Or the one that sells your clothes? How about the one that owns the gas station at the corner? How about the one that makes the car you drive, or the bus or the subway? Or the one that builds the house/apartment you live in? You've already let all these corporations "control" your activities and life. Why is it suddenly OK to pirate from a commercial (open or closed-source) software company?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Piracy being one of the best trollbait topics available for discussion, I may as well chip in. :icon_twisted:

On the one hand, I'll also agree that a lot of it is due to limited business models otherwise. I'll admit that I've done it with various media before (lots of anime, and my only defense is that I would never have ended up buying the merchandise had I not pirated it first, and also some music which I haven't been able to find otherwise - yes, even iTunes store (and similar) are severely lacking).

On the other hand, I totally agree that it is theft, and as such, a form of crime. Should a person be sued for $500 per song shared on a P2P network? Perhaps that's overkill, but the perpetrator is still guilty of theft. Furthermore, the justification of "I wouldn't use it otherwise" has absolutely no grounds to stand on. If you wouldn't use it otherwise, don't use it now. If you're using it now, then you can no longer make the claim as it has been invalidated by your actions. There's a lot of products that are sold to people who "would not have bought it" - hell, that's what the whole marketing industry is about.

Installing IIS should be fine. The VS webserver will allow to to run an ASP.NET website from your local machine, but only when you start it through VS. When you debug a website this way, VS fires up the webdev.webserver.exe and attaches the debugger to it.

If you wanted to host your website from a machine, you need IIS. To create this website, you would create an IIS hosted website in VS, work on it, and then hit run or debug. When you hit debug this way, VS attaches the debugger to IIS and IIS is what actually serves the site.

So, having IIS should not be a problem. And as unhelpful as it sounds, I can say that it "works on my machine."
