Hello Everyone,
I wanted to start on a personal project to see how much energy I was using when I had my laptop, tablet or phone plugged into an electrical outlet. I have no idea where to start and was wondering if anyone could get me pointed in the right direction. I was thinking of trying to write my own volt meter application and using a timer to see how much power is being used. Any help is appreciated and also what language would work best for this project? Thank you.

The first language you have to learn is not computer language but the language of electrical measurement. Perhaps start here.
In using a timer and a voltmeter alone, you never going to be able to measure power consumption.
If you mean by a voltmeter, what is commonly called a multimeter, then please consider my message as non existant.
