I dont know why but my young brother laptop (Dell) keeps turning the FN button back to default, I mean, the buttons fn+F1 fn+F2 fn+F3 (mute, volume down and volume up). turn volume just by pressing them, not the FN button. It used to work the vice versa. I changed it many times in bios, but it keeps changing everytime.. how to solve this?

Want to buy a Dell machine loaded with Linux? Shame, as it appears that Dell Europe would really rather you bought a Windows-powered one, despite having a website devoted entirely to selling Dell Ubuntu laptops. And, oh boy, does it use some strange arguments to dissuade you from becoming a Linux convert. Three years ago Dell went Ubuntu bashing, making it really pretty hard to buy a Linux-loaded machine from the vendor. The Linux machines back then cost more than the Windows ones, there were warnings about it not being compatible with lots of software and to top it all …

A quick recap on a Dell Inspiron I bought in December 2014. So far I have had a video problem that was caused by the Dell Tech installing a bad driver while trying to fix a bad USB 3 port problem. I had to send the unit back to Dell in September 2015 when the display died, and again in February 2016 for the same reason. Every time I called Dell Canada I was routed to Dell US where I was told they couldn't help me because I was in Canada. For the last two weeks I have been having …

A couple of decades ago, in another life, I wrote a little script which would capture keystrokes and then store that data within the 'white space' of an image file. It was pretty crude, but it was also twenty years ago and to be honest nobody was really looking for stuff which was effectively hidden in plain sight that way. That way being the use of something called steganography, from the Greek steganos which means covered and graphie which means writing; so literally covered writing. I used it to good effect during my period as an explorer of networks belonging …

I have a Dell Optiplex PC with a legal copy of Windows XP. But the Dell hardware seems to be failing. The problem is that the XP distribution CD I got with the computer is a Dell distribution disk, possibly with files specific to Dell (It says both Dell and Microsoft). If I can't fix the hardware, I need to find a way to transfer my hard drive or the OS and software to another computer. How much different is a Dell Optiplex from a newer HP computer I have (with Linux installed)? I used a standard Microsoft XP installation …

According to Dell SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit (CTU) security researcher [Keith Jarvis](http://www.secureworks.com/cyber-threat-intelligence/threats/cryptolocker-ransomware/), the CryptoLocker ransomware that has been written about so much of late has infected as many as 250,000 computers during the first 100 days of distribution (staring on the 5th of September, 2013). What's more, Jarvis estimates, based upon independent research, that owners of at least 0.4% of the infected machines will have paid the ransom demanded in order to unlock their data. Some pretty simple maths says that the $300 ransom multiplied by 1000 users equals a net haul of $300,000. Right? Well, maybe not. Although it …

Hi I have a Dell 690 workstation fitted with two quad core E5320 processors. I have had trouble with this PC possibly due it being damaged in delivery - it weighs 30 or so Kg. Perhaps I should have returned it :( Too late now. After using it and updating etc I gave it to my daughter and did a Windows Easy Transfer (WET) to replace her aging Dell. Apparently, the Outlook Profile was corrupted and then there was an unidentified hardware issue that prevented the 690 PC from booting. I replaced the PC with another 690 that has been …

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I have a Dell Inspiron 14 laptop with a touchpad problem. When I use the touchpad, it would highlight everything and click all the buttons when I move the cursor over something. It's like I'm pressing the left button selecting constantly, while obviously I'm not. I think it might be a hardwire issue, but is there any possibility to fix it without sending it to Dell? It would be great if you guys can help me out!!!!! Thanks! Nathan

Lately, we've been feeling rather sorry for Dell's media relations people - they keep having to put out press releases about how their employer has purchased data storage company 3Par, only to learn later that it hasn't actually happened. Dell first announced its acquisition of 3Par a couple weeks ago, when it made an $18 per share bid for the company. But a week later, HP triggered a frenzied bidding war when it offered $24 a share for the company. The back and forth bids have continued, increasing first to $27 per and now the latest offer from HP is …

Very recently, I let my laptop (HP) battery get too low, and it died on me. Usually, upon plugging in the adaptor, everything starts right back up again. However, this time, the laptop runs, but all I can see is a black screen. I can even hear the little chime when windows starts (vista), but all I can see is black. I don't think it's a backlight issue, as I the black screen still emits a sort of "glow". I know I need a new battery, but as long as it's plugged into the power supply, shouldn't it work fine? …

I have a new Dell Inspiron 660, with an intel core i3 3.4 GHz Sandy Bridge processor. Is there a way that I can overclock this CPU to around 3.6-3.7 GHz? I know that overclocking capabilities are not that great for this processor, but I am trying to get a little bit extra umph. Also, how would I overclock the built in GPU (it is part of the processor).

I am planning to buy a new laptop within a budget of 700 $. I am going to use it for mainly programming purposes so I don't really care for graphic card etc. I am looking for the following features:- i5 processor 200 GB + HD 4GB + RAM I am not really concerned with the other features. Also would these specifications suffice for programming purposes ? Are these specifications too much for my purpose? Would you advise purchasing a Toshiba /Dell/HP laptop? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I recently installed a new copy of Windows 7 on my Dell Studio XPS computer. I successfully installed the Wifi drivers on the computer for the wireless card, although it always says windows was unable to find any wireless networks. I checked to make sure all the drivers are installed correctly, the only two drivers i don't think I have installed are an ethernet controller or PCI simple communicatons control. Could this be affecting the WiFi? I couldn't figure out how to find out what type of those 2 I have, or find either drivers. This is driving …

I have been using a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop for almost 4 years now. I purchased it to use in college and now that I am almost done my four year degree, I am wondering if it is time to move on and buy a new one. I know the "average lifespan" of a laptop is said to be about 4 years anyway. The only real problems I'm having are the slow and painful death of the battery (I can get a new one for about $50) and the 2GB of RAM really seems to be showing in the computer's …

I'm running a Dell XPS 15, OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Today I tried installing Linux Mint next to Windows 7, thought I might like it. When I booted from the live cd, and tested Mint for a while, I noticed that I couldn't connect to my wireless network. I wasn't able to enable my wireless network adapter. Because I didn't like that, I rebooted my PC in Windows again, and decided to leave Linux for what it is. But the problem is that in my Windows 7 machine, I also can't make internet connection, my wireless adapter seems to …

Hi, Ever since I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard, I cannot print in color. It will print but only in black and white. I use a Dell 5100cn color laser printer. I have contacted Dell and of course there is no known time frame for a release of a driver. I hate to dump it and buy a new printer since I still have 4 full toners left! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Earlier today, I unplugged the power cord from my machine to move it to a different room (the machine was running at the time). When I plugged the machine back in it did not respond and would not charge the battery. Slowly, the battery began to lose its charge, and eventually it shut down. I tried to plug, unplug, jostle, and wiggle the power cord at its connection to the computer but nothing happened. The computer will not turn on. The power cord is displaying a green light so I ruled out that it was the problem. I think the …

A friend asked me to look at their Dell Inspiron 1525 (Vista OS) because it's not starting up. Here's what happens. When you press the power button, a black screen flashes with the Dell Logo. Then immediately the laptop powers back off. The 'on' button remains lit but the fans aren't running and the screen is black. I've checked the battery and power cord. I'd really like to fix this device for my friend. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you in advance.
