2014 was not a good year for Microsoft, with the Xbox Live network being disrupted at both ends of December by [Lizard Squad DDoS attacks](https://www.daniweb.com/software-development/game-development/news/488412/lizard-squad-claims-responsibility-for-taking-down-xbox-live-today) and then as the year was finally coming to an end a different hacking collective dropped another bomb onto Xbox. A posting on Twitter simply stated "Hey, @Xbox! We thought we'd drop on by and End 2014 with a bang ;)" along with a link to a file on Kim Dotcom's Mega cloud storage service. That file, freely available for download by anyone, was the official Xbox One Software Development Kit. ![dweb-xboxone.jpg](/attachments/large/0/c74c87eb29bf89b2cc9ce2f0855f42fe.jpg "align-center") Interestingly, the …

A group describing itself as "DDoS kings" who "just want to watch the world burn" has claimed responsibility for taking the Microsoft Xbox Live network down for an hour or two earlier today. The [Lizard Squad](https://twitter.com/LizardPatrol), posting from a Twitter account called LizardPatrol, published a message warning that "Microsoft will receive a wonderful Christmas present from us" and say that taking Xbox Live offline was "a small dose of what's to come on Christmas." ![0992b2b58f5ba1e2f918a1f8b4d51f95](/attachments/large/0/0992b2b58f5ba1e2f918a1f8b4d51f95.jpg "0992b2b58f5ba1e2f918a1f8b4d51f95") The downtime impacted upon users of both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, returning an 80151909 error when trying to connect to Xbox Live. …

Hi Guys, I have just finished setting up a brilliant space in which we have a large TV with the following connected to it: PC, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Windows 8.1 Laptop, The only thing missing, is that I am currently using just the basic inbuild TV speakers, which is a bit of a let down with gaming in particular...!! What I want to do is purchase a 5.1 surround sound system (or better) - wireless if possible, to complete the setup. What I dont know though is what sort of thing I should go for... I have …

Aside from being one of the [most hated CEOs](http://www.businessinsider.com/hated-tech-ceos-2011-12?op=1) in the world of technology, Steve Ballmer is hard at work trying to design a new world for Microsoft and the future of consumer electronics and, simultaneously, saving himself from a history of redicule. Ballmer's ambitious claim of [400 million](http://venturebeat.com/2012/09/05/ballmer-400m-windows-phone-8-windows-8-devices/) Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices comes along with their joint HTC announcement of the [8X and 8S](http://opedtech.com/2012/09/19/windows-phone-7-is-dead-long-live-windows-phone-8/), as well as the Q4 release of Windows 8, Windows 8 RT tablet, and rumors of a (much overdue) new gaming console. All of this however hinges on one man: Steve Ballmer, …

Nintendo is sitting firmly at the top of the games console tree right now, having just been 'bigged up' by the release of the US sales figures for October which show the Wii on 803,000 and the DS on 491,000. Both well ahead of nearest rival, the Xbox 360 on 371,000. The old, original, Xbox quite unsurprisingly does not feature in the top six list. That said, the PlayStation 2 does, at the bottom, on 136,000. So why mention the Xbox at all then? Simply because the Xbox 360 has yet to manage to sell more units than the original …

First there was a year of hype surrounding Project Natal, but the reality that is Microsoft Kinect has been in my family home for a week now. Everyone from my 10 year old daughter to my retired mother-in-law have played with it, so what's the verdict? Is this the future of motion control gaming or just a flawed imitation of the Nintendo Wii? Let's start at the beginning with what Kinect is not: it's most certainly not a Wii, nor a PlayStation Move for that matter, as it takes a quite different and truly unique approach to the whole motion …

Just wondering if this would work and if not then why? what may be some possible problems i may face? has it ever been done? Thankyou, SLasham

It's going to be a great Easter for Modern Warfare 2 gamers, and that's official. Robert Bowling, Creative Strategist at Modern Warfare 2 developers Infinity Ward, has posted confirmation on Twitter that for the weekend of April 2nd to 5th there will be double experience points on offer to players using the new maps. Ah yes, the new Modern Warfare 2 maps. The Stimulus Pack, as it is known, is due for release on March 30th. The first downloadable content (DLC) for Modern Warfare 2 players is already causing something of a stir amongst XBox 360 owners. Not so much …

Microsoft has been slowly moving away from the desktop PC software market for many years now, and with the recent launches of Windows 8 and the Surface tablets, along with the latest Windows Phone devices, the whole mobile and touch arena has taken quite a bit of the consumer-oriented focus. It really should come as no surprise, then, to see Microsoft strategically positioning itself in the device integration space: the Xbox SmartGlass app is a prime example of this. ![photo_(11)](/attachments/small/0/photo_(11).JPG "align-right") Available initially for Windows 8 devices and those powered by the Windows Phone OS, and then for Android devices, …

I first started writing about the 'coming soon' Xbox 720 way back in 2008 if my memory serves me well. Every now and then another rumour emerges, supposedly from 'a reliable source within Microsoft' and confirming that the release date has been fixed or announcing the final hardware specification for the latest next-gen-next-gen games console. So far, all of those dates have passed and none of those hardware details have proved to be anything other then specification speculation syndrome. ![dweb-720](/attachments/small/0/dweb-720.jpg "align-right") So why should this story be any different? Good question, and one that I have to admit I cannot …

But the Xbox indie reviewers are tough! Which is good, but this is like 5 times I have updated this stuff! Has anybody ran into this issue with the XNA website? Anyway... Here is my new video -> http://youtu.be/7Vo0t25p2vg Ben :)

If you've ever played a shooter such as Call of Duty, Battlefield or Halo in online multiplayer mode, then you will appreciate how difficult it can be to stay alive when everyone else has better weapons and knows the game maps so much better than you. But now there is hope for nOObs everywhere, as a new type of online entrepreneur in the form of the virtual bodyguard arrives on the scene. One hard-core gamer who is offering his services as an online bodyguard caught my attention recently, advertising his services on the fivesquids website where he is charging five …

My cousin wants me to repair her original fat XBox 360. It will play DVDs fine, but when trying to load a game just completely locks up. I've determined that the disk drive is failing, and that it is a Philips Lite-On DG-16D2S. I have an old busted 360 and, before researching, just tried swapping the drives; needless to say this didn't work. I've been reading up and found that there are 2 ways to replace a disc drive, getting the exact same model and replacing the new drive's circuit board with the old drive's, and by getting the Drive …

Hi, I have the new Xbox S, and I am using the built in wireless to play online. When connected I usually have fine connection however my connection often drops out on my Xbox. The problem I believe is the connection between my Xbox and the router as they are on opposite sides of my house. According to Halo my upstream bandwidth is also bad but packet loss is excellent. Anyway, my question. Would using a powerline adapter increase the speed and general reliability/stability of my connection to my Xbox? or is there another underlying issue with my connection Wired …

If you have not used one of these 'universal' programmable remote control devices for a while then prepare yourself for a shock of stellar proportions: this thing is really easy to use. No, I mean it, really easy. One For All rightly claims that it is just a three button process. The first of those buttons is quite aptly labelled 'magic' because that's exactly what appears to happen. The cost of an Xbox 360 is dropping like a brick, which is just as well considering so many things can go wrong with the Microsoft games console. In fact the whole Red Rings of Death thing has led to some frustrated users taking Microsoft to court. Jesse Maiman, a Yale University student, is also going to court over an Xbox 360 but his lawsuit is not against Microsoft and his console is not broken as far as he knows. It is, however, missing. There's a really interesting blahblahtech posting that has popped up to address what it refers to as the "myth that video games harm children both socially and intellectually." It approaches the debate from parental questioning perspective, which seems as good as any to be fair. Some of the research it picks up upon includes that which suggests gamers process information more quickly and multi-task better than non-gamers. I rather liked the research quote which was based upon surgeons playing Super Monkey Ball: "Surgeons who play video games three hours a week have 37 percent fewer errors and accomplish tasks 27 …

Xbox Live’s third annual Summer of Arcade, presenting the biggest and best smash hits of the season, kicks off today with the release of Limbo. A short description on the Xbox Live Marketplace leads way into a marvelously morose journey: “Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy enters LIMBO.” That’s it. There is no before, no after, no rhyme or reason as to why you awake in a wind-swept meadow where everything wants you dead. Premonitions of your sister haunt you, leading you from beginning to end across the puzzles and platforms of a title that you won’t soon forget. …

If you thought that gaming was all about next generation technology, HD graphics or innovative input systems think again. If the results of a survey into console usage in the US during 2008 is anything to go by, it would appear that gameplay is still in charge. The Nielsen research shows that more people were playing with their old PlayStation 2 that their new PlayStation 3. Heck, it showed that more people were playing with that PS2, in terms of the number of minutes spent using a console throughout the year, than the Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360. Rather …
