This thread raised a good question. asked what “PageRank evaporation” means and was on the right track: spammy backlinks and poor linking can hurt a site’s visibility. To make that useful, here is a clearer, up-to-date take on what people mean by “evaporation,” why it happens, and how to diagnose/fix it.

PageRank evaporation (informal SEO term) describes link equity that doesn’t end up boosting the pages you want. The PageRank model spreads a page’s score across its outgoing links; the simplified formula is:

PR(u) = (1-d)/N + d * sum_{v in Bu} PR(v)/L(v)

where d is the damping factor. That redistribution plus pages that link out a lot, link to non-indexed/blocked pages, or sit as “dangling” nodes can shrink the share any one page receives. See the PageRank overview for the math and intuition: PageRank (Wikipedia).

Quick diagnostic checklist

  • Check Google Search Console for manual actions, coverage issues, and the top linking pages.
  • Crawl the site (Screaming Frog or similar) to find orphan pages, redirect chains, canonical/noindex misuse, and heavy external-link pages.
  • Export backlink data (Search Console, Moz, Ahrefs) to spot spammy incoming links or a skewed link profile.
  • Map internal links: ensure important pages get contextual internal links from high-traffic pages.

Fixes and cautions

  • Fix redirect/canonical mistakes, remove unnecessary noindex/crawl blocks, and improve internal linking to consolidate equity.
  • Reduce unnecessary outgoing links from key pages and group content into silos so link equity flows intentionally.
  • Only use Google’s disavow tool when you have clear spam/unnatural-link issues or a manual action; follow Google’s guidance on link spam (Link schemes and ).
  • Note: rel="nofollow" used to be treated as “no pass,” but Google now treats it as a hint (see Google’s 2019 update), so behavior can differ in practice.

Summary: “Evaporation” is usually a link-distribution and site-architecture issue more than a mysterious penalty. Start with an audit, fix structural problems, and verify changes in Search Console.

from what i've gathered, its when you lose website SERP due to spams back links and bad linking strategies for site links, when your PR just kinda falls off the map.

PageRank Evaporation – Noun phrase. In PageRank algorithms, some or all of a document’s PageRank may be distributed to the rest of the documents in the collection. This is called PageRank Evaporation.

I am also listing this word for the first time
