For those that don't know, A canonical page is the preferred version of a set of pages with highly similar content.

You can specify a canonical link to the page you prefer Google to index with a link element.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this affects you during Panda updates?
Can this harm you in terms of duplicate content? Or do you think Google takes the canonical link elements into consideration when sifting through all of your websites pages?

We have been using canonical pages since before Panda rolled out, and still got dinged. We have since made improvements to our URL structure and what we use for our canonical URLs. I can't see how using it can HARM duplicate content? If anything, it would either remain the same or help the situation.
