Tell me everyone! Where is your keyword ranking after Penguin 5 update? Is ranking goes down or up?

October 2013's Penguin refresh (commonly called Penguin 2.1 or "Penguin 5") primarily targeted manipulative link patterns and over-optimized anchor text. The mix of reports in this thread — ranking drops noted by and , stability after removing exact-match anchors from , inner pages surfacing instead of the homepage as and observed, and a later recovery reported by — matches the typical Penguin symptom set.

Quick diagnosis checklist:

  • Check Google Webmaster Tools / Search Console for manual-action messages and indexation problems.
  • Export the backlink profile (Search Console plus a third‑party link tool) and inspect anchor-text distribution.
  • Look for a high share of exact‑match anchors, many low‑quality domains, or sudden spikes in links.
  • Verify canonical tags, redirects and internal linking if inner pages are outranking the homepage.
  • Rule out unrelated causes: recent site migrations, accidental noindex/robots issues, or server errors.

Practical recovery workflow:

  1. Assemble a link inventory and log domain, anchor, date first seen and quality signal.
  2. Prioritize removal requests and track outreach attempts in the spreadsheet.
  3. Prepare a disavow file only after documented removal efforts; upload via Search Console with clear notes.
  4. If a manual action exists, submit a focused reconsideration request showing the cleanup evidence.
  5. Diversify future anchor text and pursue natural/branded links through useful content and outreach.
  6. Strengthen on‑page signals for target pages (unique titles, internal links, better content).
  7. Monitor traffic and rankings; expect recovery to take weeks to months depending on link cleanup and Google refreshes.

Notes and cautions: the disavow tool is a last resort and should be used carefully with proper documentation. The varied experiences in this thread illustrate that outcomes depend on each site’s link history and cleanup rigor; systematic link auditing plus steady content and linking improvements gives the best chance of recovery.
