I would argue that SEO can still be more effective than social media in terms of digital marketing. It depends on your product, I suppose. There’s a right fit for each audience and niche.

There is no doubt that digital marketing is the future. As technology advances and people's attention spans continue to shrink, businesses will have to rely more and more on digital marketing tactics to reach their target audiences.

That being said, there are a few key things to keep in mind when planning your digital marketing strategy. First, make sure you are targeting the right audience; secondly, make sure your content is high quality and engaging; and finally, make sure you are using the latest technologies and platforms. If you can do all of these things, you're guaranteed to be successful in the world of digital marketing!

Right now, a large retailer like Marks & Spencer, Auchan, or Walmart can persuade certain users to download a store-specific loyalty app. That app can enable geo-location/geo-fencing and communicate in real time with a data warehouse/analytics infrastructure, which correlates a given user's device ID with any browsing information that retailer can attribute to a given user, previous purchases, and/or demographic data. This is especially true if the retailer provides free WiFi in-store. When a pre-trained machine learning model detects a user's proximity to a store, it can decide where to send a targeted, limited-time promotion to that user's device (either through push notification, or email).

Keep in mind that Google Places also has a little dongle that it sends to brick and mortar places to hang above their doorframe. Google then "sees" any Android user that walks through the doors. I'm not sure what else they may use it for, but at a minimum, they use it in Google Maps to show when a store or restaurant's busiest time of the day is.

Digital marketing is evolving rapidly as technology advances and consumers become more discerning. Marketers must continually adapt their strategies to stay ahead of the curve and reach their target audiences.

Some of the key trends that will shape the future of digital marketing include:

  1. Increased use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to personalize ads and create predictive analytics.
  2. Greater use of video content, especially live streaming, to reach audiences on various platforms.
  3. More interactive content, such as quizzes and polls, to engage users in fun and interesting ways.
  4. Increased focus on mobile marketing, as more people are using smartphones and other mobile devices to access the internet.
  5. Continued growth of social and so on.

The future of digital marketing is poised to be even more data-driven and personalized than it is today. With the rise of AI and machine learning, marketers will have access to more tools that can help them automate tasks, personalize messages, and analyze customer behavior. In addition, as more companies adopt a customer-centric approach, digital marketing will become increasingly important for driving acquisition, engagement, and retention.
