Nice work by and — the behavior you described (a System32 folder opening at logon, long delays and icon/desktop flicker) most often comes from a bad startup entry that points at a folder or an orphaned/slow-loading item that the shell tries to start. Since the follow-up log looks much cleaner, focus now on verifying system integrity and stopping a recurrence rather than repeating removals.

Before changing anything, create a System Restore point and export any registry keys you plan to edit. Useful verification steps (run from an Administrator account; XP may request the CD for some tasks):

sfc /scannow
chkdsk c: /r
eventvwr.msc
  • Use sfc /scannow to repair missing/corrupt system files (may ask for the Windows CD).
  • Run chkdsk c: /r to rule out disk errors that can cause slow program launches and visual glitches.
  • Open Event Viewer and inspect System/Application logs for errors that occur at boot — driver or service failures will be logged there.

For ongoing stability and speed: trim startup items (use msconfig to test disabling nonessential entries), review Scheduled Tasks, and uninstall toolbars/unknown ActiveX controls. Check Device Manager for driver problems (display drivers are a common cause of flicker — nvsvc32 in your log indicates an NVIDIA component; reinstall/update the display driver if you still see visual issues). Keep real‑time protection current but avoid running multiple realtime scanners simultaneously (they can fight each other and slow boot). Run a full antivirus + on‑demand anti‑spyware scan monthly and after major installs.

If anything returns, capture a fresh HijackThis log plus the relevant Event Viewer error lines and post them; include which fixes were applied and whether the folder still opens. That information makes targeted follow‑up much faster.

You got bugs :). You may want to create a new folder for hijackthis as it will dump it's backups throughout spybot's folder.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions & navigate to & delete the following if found:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Presentia-folder
c:\program files\partypoker-folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\gmfpaq.exe-file
c:\WINDOWS\System32\zzb.exe-file

Reboot normally.

Download & instal Adaware from
& update it before scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
In 'tweaks' under 'scanning engine' set it to 'unload recognised processes during scanning.'
Also in 'tweaks' under 'cleaning engine' set it to 'Always try to unload Modules before deletion' & 'let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.'
Select 'activate in-depth scan' before starting scan.
When the scan is finished select 'next.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object. Reboot

Download & instal Spybot S&D from Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. This program will prevent the install of bad activex controls that it has knowledge of. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Post a new log after doing the above.

One thing to try for the System32 opening is to click on Start, point to Programs, point to Startup and see if System 32 is there, if it is, delete it.

Before you fix anything with hjt, you should put it in its own folder -- like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe -- so it can save backups in case anything goes wrong (and so you can find the backups easily).

Someone else will have to help you with the majority of your log, but to clean it up a bit (after you put it in its own folder), close all windows, scan with hjt, and have it fix all items that say (file missing) as well as these:

(Just noticed crunchie's here, follow his advice :) )

OK .. did all you instructed to do .. now this is the current log:

Cannot see any problems there now. Have the errors stopped?

Yes ... thank you very much for your help!!
Should I run all these programs often to keep things good?
Thanks again!!
David

Always update them on-line before running. They will go a long way to helping you stay relatively clean. They will not clean everything though, so you should set IE up securely as well. Link in my Signature to show you how.
You're welcome :) . Marking this as solved. Anyone else with the same problem, please start your own thread. Thank you.
