I can't change my background, all i can do is change the color. There's nothing in the Web page background thing. I recenlty installed AVG, Spybot, and HijackThis. I ran avg until there was nothing left that it could pick up, and I immunized with S&D, but i don't know how to use HijackThis excpet how to save a log and run a scan. I also can't install SP3, but that doesn't really bother me, just thought they might be connected. Here's what Hijack this coughed up, and I guess thats it until one of you guys answers...;) Peace

Since you had some spyware one of them probably corrupted the entry in the registry that controls the background. It is at the following key:

HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system

delete corrupted value in right pane that says background.

I'm not to familiar with the registry but i did try finding what you suggested, but so far i'm not having any luck...

Click the Plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER (the second group) and then plus sign next to software etc.

HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system

If there isn't a system folder under policies then look in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE group.

Click on "system" in the left hand pane and there should be a listing in the right hand panel named background. Click on it and then press delete on keyboard.

Hope this helps.

Blargh... It's not in local machine or current user. This pc had alot of viruses and junk, it wouldn't even make it past the windows loading screen before. I'm still looking for the background listing, it might have been moved or something after all the stuff I've done to it. If you can think of anywhere else it might be, I'm all ears.

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
contents of the results file Report.txt

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Post new HJT log.

Huzzah! The SDFix scan removed whatever was messing with the desktop. Many Thanks Crunchie! I'll run that Malware bytes' thing next, in the mean time, heres the SDFix log:
