Alright, now this thing is beginning to get on my mean and ugly side. Everytime I open a file with images in it, whether it be, GIF, JPG, PSD, PNG, etc. It gets to the point where it just automatically closes, not even a second to look at the images. If I browse through an images folder in Photoshop, BANG, it closes. All of this is stressing me out and my PC is running terribly slow. Sorry, I havent had time lately to run Adware or Spyware scans with McAfee since I have it now, because of school and all.

Can somebody tell me if its something wrong with the darned image files or what, PLEASE. Hijackthis log included:

Short primer that builds on and : the symptom (folders or image viewers closing immediately when images are shown, plus a very slow machine) is classic for a problem in Explorer/preview code rather than the image files themselves. Common root causes are bad shell/preview handlers or thumbnail-generation code, a damaged thumbnail cache, a misbehaving codec/preview DLL, or an AV/real-time scanner hooking file reads. Start by collecting evidence (Event Viewer) and then isolate extensions/startup items before deleting or uninstalling things. (learn.microsoft.com)

A practical, low-risk troubleshooting order:

  • Boot Safe Mode to see whether the crashes stop (if they do, the cause is a non-Microsoft driver/service/extension).
  • Check Application errors in Event Viewer for the timestamp of the crash and note the faulting module or DLL name (that name is the clue to which product installed the handler). (learn.microsoft.com)
  • Use a shell-extension viewer to disable third-party Explorer handlers (hide Microsoft entries first); two reliable tools are ShellExView and Autoruns — disable non-Microsoft thumbnail/context-menu/preview entries, reboot, and retest. (nirsoft.net)

Next, rule out thumbnail cache and system-file corruption:

  • Turn off thumbnails (Folder Options -> View -> always show icons / do not cache thumbnails) and remove existing thumbs.db files; test again. Corrupt thumbs.db or a buggy thumbnail handler often triggers instant crashes when a folder with images is opened. (howtogeek.com)
  • If instability persists, run System File Checker and a disk check (sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f /r) to repair damaged system files or disk sectors; SFC may require the XP install media. (learn.microsoft.com)

Cautions and next steps: when testing, briefly disable real-time AV only to confirm whether it’s involved, then re-enable it. If the faulting DLL is identified in Event Viewer, search that DLL name (or paste it into an updated HijackThis/Autoruns report) to get targeted removal instructions. This approach isolates the culprit without random deletions and complements the Viewpoint/removal steps already suggested by .

One more last very bitty thing, I have Firefox browser, since IE was too slow, is there adware and spyware that was slowing it down or what, with firefox, its zooming 100% quicker then IE. And also, everytime I startup my computer, a bunch of programs open, like Yahoo Messenger, Weaterbug, MSN, AIM, etc. How can I select what to startup with and I do use Weatherbug, is there a way I can set it to limit startup until I can buy Weatherbug Plus which hopefully isnt spyware since it wont be advertising like this one does.?

*BUMP* Anybody

www.blackviper.com for what startup's can be disabled or manually started.

You need to update hijackthis to version 1.99. Run hijackthis & go to *Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line*. If the site is down, go here. Remove the old version by opening the program, going to config\misc tools, then uninstall & exit. You then have to delete the file manually.

Alright, I upgraded, yet I am still having the problems whenever I open an file with images in a folder, it always automatically closes on its own. Here is another HijackThis Log file with the **upgraded** 1.99

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions and navigate to and delete the following if found:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager<----folder
C:\Program Files\Common files\updater<----folder

Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

i'll try it as soon as i can

Alright, I did it, but the computer is still going sluggish. I need to allow for a faster startup first though. So I'll get the Log back to you today or tomorrow.

By the way, what is Viewpoint Manager anyway? I am clearning out some usless software like Pluck because I don't hardly use it anyway so I do not not need it anyway. Does the Black..... thing really work anyway?

Alright, I have set it so that the Startup Type is Manually, what will this allow me to do. Will this allow for nothing to startup or what. I may change it to disabled because it sounds like it will ask me what to startup and such which sounds stupid. Thanks anayway and how can I pick what to startup anyway is there like a list of programs or something I can?

That's what the Blackviper link is for :)
