I'm an ametaur when it comes to computers. Recently when I boot up my computer I get a bunch of XXXX.exe bad image error windows. I just press ok a bunch of times and they go away and everything runs fine. The XXXX part is the program, which in my case, is everything on my computer. When ever i try to start a program I get the bad image error for that program again. I hit ok and the program starts just fine. These errors are starting to get really annoying and i've been researching on how to fix it. But all I can find is this might be a virus/infection of some sort. Then I found hijack this and i thought i would give that a try. So here is th HJT Log. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi welcome to daniweb,
You obviously have malware of some type on the computer. Have you run any scan with your McAfee Anti-Virus program? If not please UPDATE it and run a Full System scan with it. Have it remove or quarantine anything it finds. If it produces a log then save that log for posting here. If no logs are produced please make a note of the FULL NAMES of all malware found AND their locations. Post that information in your next post.
Next ATF-Cleaner.exe by Atribune

• You can put ATF-Cleaner on your Desktop for easy access.
RUN ATF-Cleaner.exe.

-- Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
-- Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
-- Click Empty Selected > OK

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.
REBOOT the computer.

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
After completing the three steps above then run a new Full System Scan with HiJackThis. Save the log and exit the program.
Come back here and copy/paste all three of those logs AND the results of the scan with your McAfee program.
Judy

Ok first off I ran an Anti-Virus Scan with McAfee and it found one thing. I went ahead and deleted it but then I remembered that you wanted to know what and where it was. But since I had already deleted it I don't remember either.(Sorry for that) Then I ran the latest version of Ad-Aware and did a full system scan, that found nothing. I then did the ATF Cleaner and deleted everything like you had said. After that I ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it found 13 items which I quarintined. The log is below. After that I did the ESET online scanner. That only found one file. And since you have to purchase the program I just went and deleted the file myself. It was an old song file in the My Music folder in my documents. The log is also below. Then I ran Hijackthis and that log is also below. After all of this, the bad image errors still keep coming up.

Please do the following;
Download ComboFix
Click on the Save button and then when it asks you where to save it, make sure you save it directly to your Windows Desktop.
Once the download is complete you will see the Combofix on the desktop.

* Close all open Windows including this one.
* Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.
Doubleclick the combofix icon on the desktop to run the program.

Windows will issue a prompt asking whether you wish to run the program, click Run
You will then see a Disclaimer screen asking you to agree to the disclaimer. Press the number 1 key to accept the disclaimer.

Now just sit back and allow the program to run

Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.

When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
Please post back with that log.

When all is complete then please post back here with that log.

Ok I just ran Combofix and here is the log it produced. Also, I must note that the Bad Image Error boxes have stopped coming up, at least for the time being.

Looks much better. Run HiJackThis again and put a check mark next to this entry
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: wbsys.dll mega.dll
Click the Fix Checked button.
Exit HJT.
Then double click My Computer.
When that opens double click "C" drive.
When that opens double click c:\windows\system32\
and when that opens scroll through the list, and look for the following files mega.dll and wbsys.dll.
If you find them delete them.
Reboot the computer.
Run a new HJT scan and post back with that new log.
Judy

Ok so I deleted the one item in HJT. Then I went to the C drive and looked for those files. The mega.dll was not there but the wbsys.dll is. Except when I try to delete it, it won't delete. I get an error messeage that says:

Cannot delete wbsys: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

· Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it

KillAll::

c:\windows\system32\wbsys.dll

· Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
· At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
· You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
· Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
· Follow the prompts.
· When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt

Post back with that log.

I created the code and saved it on my desktop like you said. I then dragged it on Combofix and heres the log it made.

Did you just re-enable Start programs or something? You have a lot more showing in this log than in previous ones.

Um not to my knowledge. If I did it was an accident. I don't even know how to re-enable Start programs. I didn't even know they were DISabled.

Ok, just new things showing in this log that hadn't shown before. Seem to be legitimate programs though.
Are you still getting those bad image errors?

No im not. Everything has been running smoothly with out any problems. I just wanted to say thanks for all help you have given me. Im only 16 years old, and I have always been known as the "tech guy" in the family. Every time someone needs help with anything electronic they usually go to me and I usually know how to solve the problem. But this time I was at my wits end, and you really saved me. I was worried that we were going to have to get a new computer or something. So thank you.

Really happy I could help. To make you feel better, you rarely, if ever would have to get a new computer because of infections.
You need to uninstall combofix because it shouldn't be used as a regular cleaner, only specific circumstances and then only when directed to do so.
To remove it do the following:
* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. The space between the combofix and the /u, it must be there.
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Also uninstall HiJackThis, it is no longer needed. This can be done via Add/Remove.
You also need to set a new, clean Restore point.
To do this Right Click My computer.
Choose Properties
When System Properties opens choose the System Restore Tab.
Place a check mark in Shut down System Restore.
You will probably get a message telling you it will be shut down, click ok or yes.
Allow it to shut down.
Wait a moment. Then go back in and take that check mark Out so that System Restore will turn back on.
Do all of the above and you should be good to go!
Judy

Judy,
Thank you so much for helping me again.
But, I now have another problem and was wondering if you could take a look at it for me. I posted it as a new thread but no one has posted back with any answers, and so I was wondering if you had any for me. So heres the problem from my post:

I am having a major problem with my desktop computer and could really use some help. So heres the story. Last night I was on my computer when a McAffee popup came up and it said that McAffee had detected a virus on my computer. And then an Ad-aware popup came up saying that it had detected a virus on my computer. So I ran a McAffee full system scan and that turned up clean. Then I ran an Ad-aware full system scan and that too turned up clean. Satisfied that there was no real immediate risk to my computer I shut it off and went to bed. Then this morning I turned it on and clicked on my profile account. But when it loaded, instead of my normal wallpaper, it was a black background with a flashing warning message in the middle. It read, “WARNING: Your computer has been infected with trojan horse, Passcapture, and etc. Any private information on your computer may be distributed to third parties. We recommend you use an anti-spyware program and clean your computer.” Just as I finished reading the warning message, 12 internet browsers opened up. Each one was a website for a random, off-brand, anti-spyware program wanting you to buy their product. I closed all the windows and started another McAffee full system scan. But just as it was starting, it terminated itself. So I tried to start it again, but the scan just stopped itself like before. I tried 3 more times but all of them stopped like the first one. Giving up on McAffee, I moved to Ad-aware Anniversary Edition, and ran its full system scan. During the entire process of the scan, My Documents kept opening itself every couple minutes. Thinking it was the virus(or whatever was on my computer) trying to get at my personal files, I would just close My Documents as soon as it opened. The scan finished, and Ad-aware had found 159 objects on my computer. I chose the remove all option, and Ad-aware removed the first half of objects, but required me to reboot the computer to finish the removal of the second half. So I went ahead and restarted my computer. When it finished booting up I clicked on my profile account. It started to load like normal, saying “Logging on”, “Loading Your Personal Settings”, and just as my desktop appeared it went back to the loading screen saying “Logging off”, “Saving Your Personal Settings”. I tried several more times to load my profile account but each time it would instantly log me off. So then I tried the other accounts on the computer, but those too would log you off instantly. So I rebooted the computer in Safe-Mode. I then tried to log on to all of the accounts on the computer, but it was still logging me off as soon as I logged on. So now I really need some help. Now I can’t even get on to my own computer, (I am writing this on my sisters laptop) and I have no idea on how to proceed in fixing this problem. So any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Sorry we missed your other post. If you look around you'll see there are only two of us helping here much of the time, Crunchie and myself.
Is this the same computer we worked on earlier in this thread?
I am going to ask Crunchie to take a look here and see what he thinks.
Judy

Try this first and let us know if it worked;

Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852

Yes, it is the same computer.

Try Crunchie's suggestion

Ok, so I tried the Last Known Good Configuration. This time when I tried to log on, it loaded for a longer periodof time before logging me back off again....but my desktop never fully loaded.
