I'm on windows 2k Pro, SP4, Explorer 6, SP1.

the problem im having is unknown as to how it started, my older brother was looking at some... 'sites' and now i have a casino popup, my homepage wont change from , and i have this 'sexdial' that appears on my desktop every time the casino popup appears, some other odd tidbits too... when i search on google, it comes up with a 404 error, but with a (very bad) google logo saying its unknown on the server, also, unless i enter a website name and press ctrl+enter as apposed to just the url (google instead of www.google.com) it wont come up at all, and gives a 404 error.

i have ran Adaware, Spybot S&D (they both found some bits, and supposedly removed them, but with no avail), and Hijack this.

i've completely cleared my computer of its cookies, temp files, temp internet files, and ran both adaware and S&D again. it found stuff again, and again supposedly removed them, but again, to no avail. anyway, here is the Hijack This log:

This thread is a classic browser‑hijack case: changed search/homepage, persistent popups and shortcuts. ’s advice to run targeted removers in Safe Mode and to use HijackThis to remove persistence was the right first move and explains why got a working system again. Below is a compact, practical checklist to confirm a clean system and reduce the chance of recurrence.

  1. Make a backup of personal files first (do not trust the box while it’s intermittently infected).
  2. Collect fresh logs in both normal mode and Safe Mode so you can compare what only appears when the system is fully running. Use those comparisons to spot persistence mechanisms.
  3. Run multiple, up‑to‑date scanners: an antivirus, an antispyware tool and a rootkit scanner. If items are flagged, quarantine first; don’t delete registry keys or system files without a backup.
  4. Inspect startup mechanisms and browser helper objects with a trusted startup viewer (look for unknown entries and services). Remove or disable only items you can identify as malicious; export the registry or copy the item names before changing anything.
  5. Check network persistence: review proxy/DNS/router settings and the hosts file for unexpected entries. Reset the router and restore browser settings to defaults if needed.
  6. If the infection returns after these steps, run an offline rescue scanner (bootable media) or consider a clean OS reinstall — persistent rootkits often require a rebuild.

Cautions: never use “fix” tools blindly; always create backups. Avoid clearing browsing history until you’ve captured logs that might show the infection vector. After cleanup, change passwords for sensitive accounts and keep the OS and security tools updated or move to a supported OS to reduce future risk.

oh yeah, it should be noted that IE was 5.5 when the problem occured.

i've ran housecall, but it found nothing, and CWShredder only got rid of one 'readme.txt' file :(

[img][/img] I seriously like jam

I am having the same/similar problem...

hmm.. odd.

i just got the Casino pop up again, and the 'sexdial' shortcut on my desktop, however, that usually prompted a change in the homepage too, but this time, it hasnt for whatever reason.

so, here's a summary:
i've done everything you guys have so far suggested
to that end, my homepage appears to no longer change
however, the casino popup, and the 'sexdial' shortcut still appear sporadically.

i've also ran Housecall, EzAntivirus, and !aVast antivirus programs, all found nothing.

the HJT log has also changed again. here it is:

looks like its back to (or similar to) its original state. seems a bit persistent to me... no wonder i couldnt get rid of it myself, i normally have no trouble with this sort of thing

also, another quick question, is hijacking illegal?

also, another quick question, is hijacking illegal?

Currently no, at least not in the US.

However, there is legislation being developed at both state and federal levels which, if passed, would make some or all of the tactics used by spyware distributors illegal. Do a Google search on the following terms to find out more about what's going on and how you might be able to help:

spyware illegal

[img][/img] I seriously like jam

WTF??

The jams are revolting! ;)

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

looks much cleaner again.. lets hope this is the end.

Looks clean to me .
Check how i got infected in the first place in my signature below.

its definately gone, but i dont think i'll ever know how i got infected in the first place, since my brother was the one on the PC at the time of infection, he realised what he'd done and cleared the history =/

im gonna make attempts to protect myself from this sort of thing happening again anyway.

Cheers Caper.

After you get it all fixed and things are working good ,Download and install these two programs to help stop Spyware .
