Jump to PostWell not really. But if you dont install GRUB, your computer wont recognize linux right away. You will have to boot into windows (if you have dual boot) and install EasyBCD and set up a dual boot from there.

No. You can install GRUB to non-hdd locations e.g a floppy, if you want to. Also you can use NTLDR (the windows bootloader) to boot linux. A bit of a pain, but a bit easier in recent (vista/7) versions.
Installing GRUB is the easiest way but its understandable if you dont want to (e.g dont want to nuke shortcut access to a recovery partition)
