hello,
i need to know how to use the talk command to communicate with other mac computers across a large network. please help i have limited privilages.

I don't think "talk" will work on a Mac, because there's no facility for the OS to pop up a message into the Aqua GUI saying 'userfoo wants to talk to you'. I think this is reliant on X11.
When trying to turn on "mesg y" in an xterm, I had to use sudo to do it. Since you're not an admin user, you cannot use sudo, and won't be able to "accept messages".
It doesn't matter, it doesn't work with X11 on the Mac either. Looks like you'll have to stick to using the phone!
