iMac G5 1,8GHz 17'' combo

I tried a restore on this machine, a month or so ago, then went to a full erase and install 10.4. There was little or less improvement, then on start (restart) the machine gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and hangs there. I tried with the option key and with the 'c' key held down at powering up; same grey screen. When trying to start from the install disk it gets as far as choosing the disk to install on, well, it never gets to that point, just a spinning gear or the beach ball.

It seems as though the volume cannot be read, or recognized (like there is no operating system at all). So, I tried everything pertainable at apple.com.

Any clues? Other than taking it to the store? (6 months left on warranty, bought 9/22/05).

Any help is appreciated.

John

I got the machine to accept the install disk and it worked and is currently up and running. Now it is a matter of time to see if it holds.
