My question is--I have heard that in Word, you should not use a dot in your document name, i.e. LTR TO JOE 09-0913.1 (the .1 being that is the first letter we wrote to Joe on that day. The next letter will be LTR TO JOE 09-0913.2. I have heard that saving a document like this could corrupt a document. Is it wise to save a document like this? Thank you.

No it is not recommended. Try using a - or an _ instead.

save it your document not corrupt

Makes no difference in current Word builds, although may have caused issues in pre-Office 2003 versions. Only the file prefix (following the last full-stop) are noted for file-type.
