A short, practical summary and cleanup plan based on the HijackThis output posted by and the follow-ups from and :

It looks very likely there’s a keylogger/spyware component running on the system (as noted). Keyloggers run hidden, capture keystrokes and other data, and can interfere with or terminate IM clients while exfiltrating credentials — treat this as a high-priority infection. (malwarebytes.com)

Immediate, safe steps (do these in order):

  • Stop using that PC for anything sensitive and disconnect it from the network right away.
  • Rescue/scan: boot to Safe Mode (or run an offline/bootable scan) so malware can’t hide; Microsoft Defender Offline is an example of an offline scan tool that finds threats that try to hide while Windows is running. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • Remediation: update definitions on a known-clean machine, then download and run a full scan with a dedicated anti‑malware tool (Malwarebytes is recommended for keyloggers) and follow with a second-opinion cloud scanner such as HitmanPro. Quarantine/remove what they find and reboot to re-scan. (malwarebytes.com)
  • Persistence cleanup: use Sysinternals Autoruns to inspect and disable any suspicious auto-start/persistence entries (don’t delete system-signed items without checking). After disabling, rerun your scanners to confirm. (learn.microsoft.com)

Repair and recovery:

  • After removal, run Windows file-repair tools (for example:
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

) then reboot. If infections recur or you can’t fully remove persistence, reimage from known-good media. (lifewire.com)

  • Assume credentials may be compromised: change passwords (start with email, banking) from a different, known-clean device and enable multi-factor authentication everywhere possible; do not reuse passwords. (cybernews.com)

Note for future readers: the thread refers to Yahoo Messenger and AIM, but both services have since been discontinued (Yahoo Messenger retired July 17, 2018; AIM was discontinued Dec 15, 2017). If the goal is to restore IM functionality today, consider modern, supported alternatives instead. (macrumors.com)

If unsure at any step, back up important personal files (to external media you will not restore from until it’s clean) and seek professional malware‑removal help rather than trying risky manual deletions.
