I tried to download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 but got a message saying;
Internet Explorer did not finish installing.
Set up can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed
on your computer.
That was news to me, so I decided to check which version is installed.
Thing is, I can't find Internet Explorer listed anywhere, not in Programmes or in
Revo Uninstaller.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

This problem usually happens because Windows already has Internet Explorer 11 (or a later build) installed, or a partial update left the system in a state where the offline installer thinks a newer build exists. As discovered, IE can be present in the Start menu even when it isn’t obvious under Programs. First-step checks and common fixes:

  1. Confirm the exact IE build. Open Internet Explorer -> Tools (gear) -> About Internet Explorer. Microsoft documents how to check the version. (Which version of Internet Explorer am I using?)

  2. Make sure the OS and prerequisites are present. IE11 on Windows 7 requires Service Pack 1 and a set of prerequisite updates (the installer tries to add these automatically; if that part fails the IE install stops). If updates are pending or a restart is required, the IE installer can fail. See Microsoft’s list of prerequisite updates (including the platform update). (Prerequisite updates for Internet Explorer 11) and (Platform update KB2670838).

  3. If a reinstall or rollback is needed: check Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates for recent IE/KB items (uninstall a bad update if necessary) or uninstall via wusa if documented. Many MS update pages explain uninstall via “View installed updates.”

  4. If IE is installed but broken, try resetting Internet Explorer settings (Tools -> Internet options -> Advanced -> Reset) and run System File Checker or a System Restore if the browser won’t start. (Change or reset Internet Explorer settings)

Note: Internet Explorer 11 has reached end-of-support for modern Windows versions; Microsoft recommends moving to Microsoft Edge (IE mode is available for legacy sites). (IE11 end-of-support and migration info)

Summary: confirm the installed build, finish Windows Update / restarts, ensure prerequisites (SP1 + platform update) are present, then rerun the correct x86/x64 installer or remove the offending update before reinstalling.
