I have just reinstalled windows xp to my acer aspire laptop with an intel chipset and probably an intel wifi. I'm trying to connect to a wifi router that does not have any network in which a sony viao with windows vista could connect without a problem and without entering any network id or passwords.

some laptops have a key sequence that switches the wireless radio on and off. take a look at the computer manual. you could try as well uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless adapter driver.
take a look at windows control panel network connections and view the wireless status. it should tell you if you have an ip address assigned, what the ethernet status is and ssid.
there is a setting on laptop under wireless settings that allows any wireless connection. make sure that is allowed.
