Yes, I had all the templates redesigned and ready to go, but I forgot to add the links to the footer.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Gah, I can't figure out the problem at first glance, and I really need to get to sleep. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Indeed, you are correct! I will fix :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It is less clear what the Sticky Threads in the forum are (I just assume that the green tags 'Read me' point to Sticky Threads, since I know those two threads to be sticky, but I don't think would've immediately seen it if I hadn't known)

We haven't been calling them 'Sticky' for about 3 years. They used to just say 'Read Me' in the old layout as well, so I'm confused by your confusion. They used to say 'Read Me' in a bold and slightly smaller font. Now they look different but ...

In a thread I visited just this morning, I saw a notification top right ' :( Not yet answered', which might be a bit misleading. In fact it had been answered: the OP just hadn't marked it as 'Solved' yet.

Yes, I changed the terminology 'Solved' to 'Answered' because I thought it makes more sense that a Q&A has not yet received the A. Should I change it back? Did I just make it even more confusing?

Further more, as JWenting already noticed: In order to go to a new forum, you need to go back to the main page if you are in a subforum.

No, you don't. You just need to click the blue menu button in the top right, next to the search. I agree there is a usability issue since you're the third person in the past 2 hours to not find it without my assistance.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

For right now, you can click the blue menu icon in the top right corner of the top navigation.

The reason it's hidden, in this way, is because I have a funny feeling that only DaniWeb oldtimers rely on our old navigation menu (which has been in use for 15 years).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

the white margins on the left and right are rather big, costing a lot of room on screen. Make the main pane wider, so people need to scroll less.

Will probably be implemented in the near future.

Font could be a tad smaller (1-2 points), again less scrolling

Have yet to decide this one.

Posts on the main page used to show in which (sub)forum they were made in the header. Makes filtering what you want to read in detail that much easier (plus often gives context that may be important in deciding whether to click through or not).

They still do show the forum, but it is no longer the main focus. The link is now small in the quote footer.

When in a post or forum I now can't get to any other forum without going back to the main/entry page. Not userfriendly.

Yes, I will look into finding a solution to making it more user friendly. For right now, you can click the blue menu icon in the top right corner of the top navigation. You can also use the Finder menu to bring up your favorite forums.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So there are two ways.

The first way is to use the breadcrumb trail at the top of the page. So it will look something like:

Software Development / VB.NET

where both of those are links, and you can click on either to jump to the VB.NET forum, or the entire Software Development category.

The second way is by launching the forum menu, by clicking the blue menu icon at the top right next to the search.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm sorry, I'm confused. What page are you trying to get to? From the discussion page to the discussion thread? Huh?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well that's saddening to hear. BTW, may I ask what your screen resolution is?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Please let me know what it is that you missed. I'm guessing it confused others as well. Will also look into repositioning the mark as solved button.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused. You were never able to vote for yourself?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Uh oh ... is the fact that you just double posted a bug?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So our new design is live, but it's far from complete. There were quite a handful of changes that needed to be made on the backend, and I needed everyone on the same layout before I could make changes to the code base. Otherwise, it would break the old design.

Either way, some stuff is still broken, there's still a lot to do, but please let me know feedback, and please be sure to start a new thread for each bug report. Thanks so much!! :)

As opposed to what? Do you mean all in caps with underscores as a naming convention? What else would you name it?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, I use a meraki at my coworking space. I have an MR16 and an MR18.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I get a list of dates, but the logs aren't opening.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks. Unfortunately you don't appear to be the only person with crazy emails from us today. I'll have to reach out to James, our systems administrator. You wouldn't by any chance be able to forward to me the headers of the emails, would you? The blank messages aren't of much use on their own.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Can you please forward them to me? dani@daniwebmail.com

Thanks!

Another delay. I've been struggling for the past day on how to redesign the chat to be a lot more useful and a lot less confusing. I keep going back and forth between just having one large chat room, or just getting rid of member shoutboxes, or what, specifically to do. Any suggestions or opinions on the matter?

dtpp commented: one big chat is kind of nonsense to me. I prefer many smaller chats (eg. sorted by subject) than one big for everything.... +0

You said it too soon. I'm starting to really feel sleepy, so I'm going to call it a night. I lasted until 4:30 am though!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm too close to the finish line to put it down right now :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Current status: Attempting to pull an allnighter to get everything done. I hate putting it down when I'm so close to the finish line, so let's see how this goes.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to share that my new design is nearly complete, and we should be going live over the next couple of days. Maybe even sooner! :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

At this time, I'm not making any functionality changes as I am only changing templates and not altering the PHP code for this project. This will be a cosmetic change only. If you have any feature requests, please ask them in a different thread so that I can loop back around and look after this restyling project is done in a couple of weeks.

That being said, I'm not really entirely on board with disabling links in chat. However, moderators can already go into a chat log and double click a line to permanently erase it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm going to launch it the way I envision, and then judge from feedback and how the new menu system ultimately gets used whether I need to reconsider or not. While I don't think it's going to be the nightmare you're thinking, it's not something that I am strongly against. Then again, Microsoft was pretty excited about the Windows 8 dashboard being a great replacement for the Start Menu.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I had the same problem and I'm not using an OAuth library. Either way, I just added a # at the end of the redirect URI to clear out any other hash it wants to send you to.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's not set in stone yet, but, as of right now, I'm leaning towards no.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Every. Single. Time that someone installs a buggy browser plugin/toolbar that screws up DaniWeb, complains about it, and then I spend hours trying to isolate which users have a problem that I can't reproduce.

Hi everyone,

As many of you know, a couple of weeks ago, I began working on a new side project, https://www.dazah.com ... After taking about two weeks, focusing all my efforts on coding and launching it, I've now resumed my focus on DaniWeb. For the past couple of days, I began working on a new DaniWeb skin (essentially, just changing all of the CSS, giving the site a more modern appearance). There are about 200 templates in total, and so it's most likely going to take a good portion of September to get this all done. However, there's something to look forward to.

I just want to reiterate that this is a cosmetic-only change, primarily limited to the CSS stylesheet. No code is being changed, no features/functionality are being modified, etc. Once I get the entire site on an updated CSS, then I can slowly roll out more functional improvements individually.

I do have two rough templates available to show you so far. Keep in mind this is a work in progress.

Hi, sorry for the silence. As it turns out, LinkedIn disabled access to their API a couple of months back. No resolution is currently available.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

My post was in response to Reverend Jim, who asked how Dazah differs from LinkedIn. The answer is that, with LinkedIn, you need to know who you are searching for, as it is designed to connect you with people you already know, or at the very least, already know of. Dazah is akin to walking blind into a networking event of people in your industry, and picking and choosing who you'd like to meet by browsing their profiles one-by-one. Essentially LinkedIn isn't our competition ... we are a different form of social network built around the LinkedIn API.

dtpp commented: I think this clears the case. Thanks :) +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Typing what into the searchbox, if you don't know them or know who to look for?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Whenever I do that, it asks me for their email address.

And, how are you meant to find their profile in the first place?

dtpp commented: By typing in searchbox maybe? +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm not trying to compete with LinkedIn ... If anything, our platform is built on top of LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is all about virtually connecting business associates and people who know each other in real life. You can only connect with someone on LinkedIn, and access their complete profile, if you either know them personally (and know their email address already) or if you have a mutual first-level connection in person.

Dazah is all about finding those people you wouldn't otherwise know about, and offering one-on-one communication with them. LinkedIn offers no such live chat or messaging service.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Exactly, that's what I'm saying. It's not true that if you build something great, they will surely come.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

btw - why its not listed by Google?

Because it's missing the main two ingredients for search engine optimization. #1 It's behind a login wall, which means that all of the content cannot be seen by Google. #2 Not a lot of other sites are linking to it (yet!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's a social media site, but certainly not restricted to those who run their own business. It's targeted at people who are in industries where they need to do a lot of networking to gain clients, etc.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I did say "I would like to share with you a new project that I just started working on." I guess I should have clarified just how new.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Google just wants you to be mobile friendly, which we are. And basic functionality is there. Our lack of a mobile audience is simply because people aren't coding on their cellphones.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Honestly, I agree with him in that the mobile experience leaves a lot to be desired. It wasn't my #1 priority because DaniWeb has always been at most 5% mobile traffic, so as long as there was basic functionality and usability, it was fine. However, Dazah is already hovering around 35% mobile traffic, so that's definitely going to be my priority this weekend.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I replied to DaniWebs email to let them know how stupid they where to push this when obviously they never even checked it out

It's a bit funny that you are mad at me for not having given Dazah a thorough investigation before promoting it to the DaniWeb community. Truth be told, Dazah is my new project that is only a couple of days old, that I conceived and developed entirely myself over the past couple of weeks.

It's definitely a rough prototype ... It's only two weeks in the works, and launched only since this past weekend! I simply wanted to share my new project with the DaniWeb community.

However, I do agree with you in that our mobile version is not quite there yet. There are account settings, etc., but they are not accessible yet from the mobile UI. The full functionality is only available from desktops right now. Full mobile functionality will most likely be introduced this upcoming weekend.

Like I said, this entire project is only a few weeks old. I came up with the idea 3 weeks ago, started developing it 2 weeks ago, and launched it over this past weekend.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

If that were the case, anyone who created a quality site would always see immediate success with it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

... So thank you for that!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks!! :) Like I said, it wasn't that many days coding, and it's only about ten minutes live. I think you're the first person that signed up who wasn't a friend who I messaged about it lol.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey everyone :)

Sorry I've been kind of absent from DaniWeb for the past week or so. I was actually working on a new side project. It's close to launch now, so I wanted to share it with you guys.

https://www.dazah.com

Keep in mind this is less than two weeks worth of coding, including the time it took to come up with the concept, so don't bash for it not being too feature-rich. What do you guys think so far?

I figured it's something I can use myself, as I sell advertising for a living, as you guys all know! :) So we'll see ...

Also, did you recently install any Chrome extensions?

I can't reproduce this. Not sure if anyone else can?
