Nothing changed. Will investigate.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Not worth it anymore. I don't even think Dmoz is maintained anymore, and Google Directory no longer uses it.

I know that Windows 10 is now out, and it would make the most amount of sense to either rename our current Windows Vista/7/8 forum into Vista/7/8/10, or separate them out into Vista/7 and 8/10. However, due to all of our recent issues with Google, I'm trying to avoid any big changes to our navigational structure at the moment. Letting things settle a bit, as Google has been doing some deep crawls lately. So it's not that I've forgotten or am backburnering it ... I'm purposely waiting just a little bit. Perhaps a week or so.

It looks as if your account has already been activated.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Welcome, non-lurker!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I've seen the same thing. Sometimes I have to close the chat twice before it stays closed.

The close button closes out of the individual chat room that it is in. Most likely, you have multiple chat room alerts for some reason (i.e. someone posted something new to your shoutbox) which is why you would need to close out of it more than once. Essentially you're closing out of each new alert individually.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You won't be getting any emails.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Pspell wasn't built into PHP on the new servers by default.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well, yes, it's designed to be anywhere up to an hour delayed. More than that is due to an email issue.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We have been having email server issues the past few days. The email server was malfunctioning for most of Saturday, and the number of emails in the queue created an enormous backlog.

With regards to email alerts for updated threads, we send those out in batches once an hour. You can subscribe to our mailing list for instant alerts, but prepared to receive a lot of emails. It works like a traditional bidirectional listserv and it's recommended that you create rules for your mail client to filter and sort, but once you do, it's powerful.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm, so strange. Yeah, the next time if it happens if you could send me the response headers (which you just did) along with the URI in the browser bar.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We've been having server issues the past few hours. Can you explain what you mean by "it's not working". What, specifically, is wrong?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I came up with a solution but it might have some unforeseen issues. Let me know if anything seems funky.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

For some clarification, what is breaking it is having a clickable link within a code snippet. I'll have a solution soon.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I know what's causing this but, unfortunately, I don't have an immediate solution. Please bear with me as this might take a couple of days to fix.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

To answer the OP's question, as to the reason why the page they linked to is soooo long and not split into multiple pages, the answer is that we allow 20 posts per page, regardless of the length of the post.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Tags are meant to be a quick add/delete type of thing ... asking for people to start entering reasons for the tags would defeat the point. Regardless, I've removed the tag. You could have too :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

They are moderated in the sense that newbies can't add tags, and anyone else can modify them, meaning they are community-moderated.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I highly doubt it's a publicity stunt by the Telegraph. I'm sure it's just a case of googlebot's faulty AI.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about Google replacing image links from the old article??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Awesome. Thanks so much.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Any non-newbie member can add tags to any article.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It wasn't really a bug, but rather a weird effect due to the way that I expire points. Regardless, it's been rectified.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, thanks. Will look into this.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK, I've updated the member profile badge to show Banned. It was actually something that already existed ... When determining which badge to show, being Unverified actually had precedence over being Banned (both have the exact same privileges ... none!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Here's a niggle: previously banned members now not banned and free to do what they will.

Don't worry. It's strictly just what the badge says on their member profile. They can't post. Regardless, investigating why this is ...

Another potential problem. I've edited the June newsletter, but not had the test copy through email turn up for checking.

Strange because it worked for me? Did it go to your spam??

cereal, the spell checker bug is just because I'm bad at regex and the problem must have always existed. Not related to the migration.

cereal commented: ok +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Prit, the redirect error you were facing ended up being related to the login issue. Both are now fixed.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Currently working on issues with login. Not sure about the speed issues. I'm not experiencing them, but it might be something funky with the load balancer ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, I'm aware, but I'm currently waiting on James to get home from dinner in order to fix it.

cereal commented: ok, thank you! +0
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks for the heads up! This has been fixed. Sorry, we have been going through a huge server migration :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thanks Jim!

PyTis, we don't purposefully disable the browser's checker. We just use an editor that doesn't allow us the option in the first place. Browser spellchecking is only available in HTML <textarea>, which we don't use.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Things might have gotten a little wonky because we did an entire server migration tonight. However, it probably wasn't you visitng that page that fixed the issue. Instead, we run a script every so often that recounts things, and it was probably just a coincidence that it ran in the background.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We just migrated to all new servers!! Yay!

Please be sure to let me know if anything isn't working right, or seems off, ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm really sorry about that.

https://www.daniweb.com/community-center/daniweb-community-feedback/threads/496319/daniweb-going-into-read-only-mode

We are in the middle of some major server migrations.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So we just gave it another shot ...... we're no longer in read only mode. But now to do all the rest of the migration!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Will that litle image at the bottom of the site ever be updated to show my avatar

Yes, it will be updated.

Out of curriousity, why is it disabled in this, where I am typing right now?

The editor that we use is not a standard HTML textarea, and therefore you cannot use your browser's spellchecker. You can click the little green checkmark in the editor toolbar to see a preview of your post and run a spellchecker through it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You probably have the full chat window open somewhere.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

ProgrammingForums is a different site. It currently isn't being maintained.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately it didn't work and we had to revert.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

According to James, about 3 hours.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We are currently in the process of migrating onto all new server architecture.

Tonight, at approximately 9 pm EST, we will be putting the database into read-only mode while we migrate the database to its new home. Just a heads up :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Currently running an experiment where it opens by default. If you close it, it stays closed for the rest of your browser session, but then reopens again the next time you visit the site.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Absolute congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi there. Welcome to DaniWeb!! :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You want to use htmlentities() or htmlspecialchars() when sending data to an HTML page, not when preparing data to be entered into a database. In fact, htmlentities() is not what is causing the I\'m. That's probably the result of addslashes, which you do want to do when escaping data to be entered into a database that is surrounded by single quotes.

As mentioned, there was a bug last month that was preventing people from requesting a cashout. As soon as the bug was fixed, everyone suddenly requested a cashout all at once! That's why it's taking a long time for me to get all the funds together to pay it all out.

This is also a good explanation as to why the system was designed for points to expire after a year. It's not feasable for us to allow someone to accumulate points over the course of many years and then suddenly cashout five years of points all at once.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's not a bug. Our web traffic has just been super crappy lately, advertising revenue is down, and donations are way down too. The pool in which we pay cashouts comes primarily from donations, with a little bit extra thrown in from ad revenue to cover everything. Unfortunately, what happened was when the bug was fixed last month, suddenly everyone cashed out all at once, and I am waiting for my PayPal balance to replenish enough in order to pay everyone who requested a cashout. (It's all automated ... every Friday it checks to see if there's enough $ in order to process all the cashouts, and if not, it tries again the following Friday).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't see it as stalky, lol. All messenging applications have a list of online users.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Go to the main chat page (where it lists all the active rooms) at https://www.daniweb.com/chat and then initiate a chat with someone who happens to be online. Their shoutbox will immediately pop-up.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We do that in the static chat log but, due to the nature of our chat application, it isn't very easy for us to do it in from within the realtime chat.

dtpp commented: Nonsense. Implementing realtime timestamp from NTP is piece of cake +0

I really hope this is an experiment and not the final design.

Every change I make is always an experiment. I evaluate feedback and study analytics to see if usability changes/improves. And then go from there.
