That would be like having two separate login systems on the site. You can use one set of username/password to post in some places, and a separate set to post in other places. Additionally, the two systems would not effectively be able to work together. (Avatar, signature, etc. in one, Facebook account required in another, etc) Members who choose to block comments by a certain profile by setting up their ignore list wouldn't work across the whole site. Moderators wouldn't be able to delete comments because they wouldn't be tied to DaniWeb's user profiles, etc. Mods wouldn't be able to issue infractions, etc.

I guess there is the 'Register with Facebook' system that allows new members to bypass the registration form by just logging in for the first time with their Facebook info, and a new member profile is automatically created for them.

I think it is most appropriate for sites that don't already have their own elaborate commenting systems or form of UGC, like forums do.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Huh??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's odd that "web development" would be a word for them to block. What does your company do?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm confused by what you mean that you can't browse Web Development. What happens when you click on Web Development in the top navigation menu? What do you mean by 'hanged by firewall'??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The monthly newsletter has been going out since Tuesday, so maybe that's what's bogging down the mail server. I will have James investigate.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Profile pictures only show when you click the avatar from your member profile. It's your avatar that you need to set (which will replace the question mark).

Don't speak too soon ... I'm going to be continually tweaking things over the course of the day.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So sorry guys, I'm going to be constantly tweaking things over the course of the day.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

That was a typo ... they wern't working for as long as it took me to make the typo, run to the bathroom, and come back. Sorry about that.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The link is working fine for me??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi,

I'm really sorry ... I can't duplicate your problem at all, and no one else seems to be experiencing it??

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We already have a Mobile Development forum and it is not very active at all. I'd like to see some more activity revolving around mobile dev before we would consider adding additional forums to cater to it.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Should be fixed (as of a lil while ago, forgot to update the thread)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

If that's the case, sorry about that.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It works for me?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Confirmed that rep/voting don't work: On it!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Rep/Voting working for me now (could be another intermittent thing I guess) but other bits appear busted - cannot double-click folders to mark forums as read for example.

Will fix the double-clicking of forum folders. Not sure why those don't work. Anything else broken?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Shoot, that was a big slip up. Fixed.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This should be fixed.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We have a new URL structure for forums and threads, that hopefully is user friendly and allows you to see where in the website's hierarchy you currently are.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sorry, I was changing our URL structure. There was a bug with the + signs in C++.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Our AUP is located at the footer of every page on the site. Upon registration, new members receive an email / PM directing them to read it.

It is fine if nearly exact questions and answers are posted on other sites. I am talking about sites that scrape our content and replicate it, without the permission of us or the posters.

Let's say you come up with a really crazy algorithm, and you want to put it out there on the web. There are LOTS of places on the Internet to put it. And they are all different. You choose the medium that is most suited to what you want to do with it.

If you want to release it under the GPL, maybe something like Sourceforge.
If you want to sell it, set up an eCommerce website and do so.
If you want to donate it to the DaniWeb community, post it here.

If you choose the latter, it was your prerogative to have chosen to donate it to the DaniWeb community. We're not a monopoly. You're free to do what YOU want with YOUR content that YOU own. Every potential site you can publish to has its own pluses and minuses, and you choose to do what you want with your own content. If you choose to contribute to DaniWeb, you are donating your content to us for use by our community, and giving up your rights to it.

Now let's say that I then saw your really crazy algorithm, and thought, "Oh, I can sell this" and so I took it down from DaniWeb and set up my own eCommerce shop in which to sell it.

I do not claim to know the law, but it my personal opinion that doing so would be akin to the American Red Cross accepting your …

We have encountered the problem before of other sites scraping our posts and duplicating our content, in full, on their sites. A handful of members were very disturbed by this because they felt they contributed to DaniWeb, not this other random site.

This is a fairly common occurrence, and is *VERY* most likely the primary reason why we lost our rankings in Google. Owning the copyright to our content ensures that we can pursue other websites that copy our content, which are ruining our rank in the search engines because of "duplicate content" (a tell-tale sign of a content farm) and pissing off our members. With just the "right to publish", we would have no course of action.

As Jon mentioned, if you don't want to give up the copyright to your company's proprietary code, so that your company and your company alone can decide what to do or not do with that code in the future, don't post it in a public forum.

However, if you post on DaniWeb, understand that you are giving up your rights to whatever you post. DaniWeb holds the copyright to everything posted, and we can choose to do with it what we wish. As far as what that entails, is it currently means that our policy is that we have no problem with people using code published on this site for their personal/professional coding projects. We do have a problem with other websites and publications copying our content and reproducing/publishing/duplicating …

Very odd. Does it happen both while logged in and not?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Can anyone else confirm? I cannot duplicate this.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, you can edit your post for about 15 minutes after you initially post it to correct spelling and grammar mistakes.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You cannot post your code on a public forum such as DaniWeb, receive help with it, and then request that your code be deleted. The purpose of forums is that your question helps not just you but many more people well into the future, as well.

If you don't want your code to be out on the Internet, you should not use forums as a means of getting help. All forums work this way.

Are you absolutely positively sure you cleared your browser's cache?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Impressive, yes. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it any type of self-awareness.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm not seeing what you're seeing? It looks correct to me?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Heh, never heard that term before.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm sure that's true, Davey. But the problem is that, considering they realize that a LOT of innocent sites were caught in the crossfire, they should have the courtesy to roll back the algorithm until it has been properly fixed. In the meantime, there are a lot of innocent businesses out there that cannot afford to keep their doors open one, two, three more days while we wait for Google to fix itself.

No.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately, no, there is no noticeable traffic increase today.

Sorry about that. We can all go and blame James, k? :)

I have started a forum thread on the official Google Support Forums here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=6546710fb55bd11b&hl=en

It seems like Google is starting to publicly take responsibility for the 'Farmer' algorithm negatively affecting innocent sites. Google started a thread in their support forums entitled 'Think you're affected by the recent algorithm change? Post here.' => http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=76830633df82fd8e&hl=en

The DaniWeb story was mentioned in this thread: http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/110302-092711

It has over 125 tweets so far, and a handful of comments, so maybe we can spread the word about DaniWeb.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Other tech support websites do this. However, it was my decision awhile ago not to specifically point out an individual post as being the "best answer" because, often times, it is the help of multiple people, engaged in a back-and-forth discussion, that brings the solution. Therefore, when a thread is marked as solved, everyone except the original poster whom contributed up to that point gets credit to their Solved Thread statistic. You can rate individual posts with the voting system or reputation system.

We were working last night adding caching for CSS and JS files. Looks like the wrong effect occurred!! Getting James on this right now ...

Many years ago, keyword density was very important to SEO. Keyword density was having the exact perfect ratio of keywords to the content as a whole. The problem with this was that, over time, spammers employed techniques of keyword stuffing ... essentially, repeating the keywords more times than one would naturally do, for the sake of seo, at the expense of real website visitors.

More recently, Google has been putting extreme emphasis on frowning upon everything that isn't natural language. i.e. When content is written for readability, and is the best for the website visitor, then it's best for Google too. Google is getting smarter and smarter about understanding when content is written for usability's sake.
