lol.. I'm getting hustled here.. I like Daniweb, but I don't really like using my money.. I'm going to be paying off student loans for the rest of my life anyway..

I prefer to donate my time, it's just as good as gold! =)

But a sponsorship let's you have no banner advertising and a bigger quick reply box :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't use IESpell. Haven't made any changes. :-/

Ooooh I know what it is!

I think all mods have access to IP info?

Can you link me to an example please?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't understand what you mean. How are they behaving differently?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Cool :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Previously, ridiculously long lines with no line spaces (that can't wrap) would push the entire page design out, ruining the site layout.

The fix was to make a change to the CSS that added a horizontal scrollbar in FireFox to accomidate the extra long line, so it wouldn't affect the rest of the page ... and in Internet Explorer and Safari, to force a hard wrap mid-word. (This CSS property is not yet available in FireFox but, from what I was reading, should be supported in CSS3.)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No. I fixed it. Forgot to update this thread. Thanks for the heads up.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Well the registration form is very simple and straightforward. It only asks essential information. Upon registering, people get a nice, friendly email from me (even with my "signature"!) saying to click the link. They get reminder emails every couple of days. When they log into DaniWeb, there's a message across the top indicating they haven't yet activated their account.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The users can't be deleted because they are important for our records (As I said, I'm required to keep data about all members who register). Additionally, it's important to have the data to track growth trends so that I can improve the site. Knowing the percentage of users who fail completing registration each day lets me tweak the registration process to increase the conversion rate and track progress.

When users who don't activate their email addresses log into DaniWeb, they're presented with a page to update their emails. Additionally, they're sent reminder emails every so often in case it landed in their junk filters or something.

I'm not trying to hide true member count. You can see the number of active, contributing members in the statistics area of the forum index in addition to via the member list page.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No, not ignorant at all. I mean, 40K people just haven't followed through with the registration process.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that, as we're legally bound to require email confirmation, and our ISP requires that any mail we send out be to a double opt-in mailing list (meaning we actually have to demonstrate proof as to the details surrounding, not just the registration, but the activation as well).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It appears that the main factor here are users who entered invalid email addresses, didn't want to take the time to confirm their email address (and forgot about the site), wanted to post something quick and didn't want to take the time to confirm their email, didn't have access to their email address when they registered and later found what they were looking for elsewhere, etc ...

Over 40,000 members have registered but not activated their memberships by clicking the link that was emailed to them.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

People register on DaniWeb for numerous reasons:

1 - They want to see what they're missing out on and are curious what features are included with a free membership

2 - They registered at their work and didn't realize they had to confirm their email, and by the time they had access to their email, they found the answer to what they were looking for and didn't need the site anymore

3 - They wanted to follow a particular thread and receive email updates

4 - They wanted to contact a particular member, and the only way to do so is to send them a private message

5 - They wanted to read member profiles

6 - They wanted to download attachments, or a thread they were reading had an attachment, and they needed to register to view it

7 - They are shy or not comfortable posting in online discussion boards, but want the full benefits of registration

8 - They registered to post their question, but then found the answer they needed and didn't need to ask after all.

I can think of more. :)

You got this solved? So what DOES the go-pear.phar file do? :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Try using:

height: 100%;
min-height: 100%;
Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You might actually like threaded mode. It eliminates the need to scroll the page at all, and you can read threads just by using the previous and next links. Then, whenever there's something you need to reply to, use Quick Reply, and your post will automatically appear as a subset of that particular post.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Firstly, why didn't you just upload the file as a JPG?

Secondly, the problem is that you simply accidentally switched modes. :) In the yellow bar right below the Ads by Google links, click on Display Modes and then choose Linear Mode.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I am very confused by what you're referring to. The only somewhat new change to the thread layout has been the smaller quick reply in exchange for the removal of one of the rectangle ads.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Forget the googlling, doing a search for "prime" within our code snippets section landed a function that outputs a list of prime numbers in python :)

Your support is much appreciated. Thanks! We do have the disable option available, however, because we understand this form of advertising can be seen as too intrusive by some, and we don't want to annoy members, but if it doesn't bother you a lot, you're encouraged to keep it active.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Go into your Edit Options page: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/profile.php?do=editoptions

And then under Thread Display Options you can choose Disable IntelliTXT to disable these ads completely. While this is an option we offer to members, please realize that leaving them active does support DaniWeb in a big way. Thanks!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup. You have to type something outside of what you're quoting others as saying.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Cool. I don't know what you did to that log, but it's impossible to read. Can you repost.

Sorry, that was my fault. My darn post cache!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

jbennett, the problem was because your family installed spyware on your computer, based on our IM convo :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I can't find anything wrong with the notification system. It is working just fine for me, and I haven't made any changes.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Glad to hear.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ancient,

The blank spaces are where advertisements are. Either you're using an ad blocker or you don't have Macromedia Flash installed.

Why has this thread been marked solved?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The system doesn't evaluate the quote to see whether it was changed from a previous post. It simply discounts everything within quote tags from being a part of the one character minimum.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This is normal behaviour. It is required to enter at least one character. However, you're trying to submit a post which is exclusively a quote of an existing post. You must enter at least one character unique to your post.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Does it do this on all thread pages or just some of them? Exactly which browsers and which OS's? Can you get it to work with a different browser?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is it still doing it on the homepage though?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is it still happening?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When did it start appearing like this for you?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This site uses UTF-8, if that means anything. I believe there is just a one character minimum per post.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It loads just fine for me. :(

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi,

Start reading at about post #25 of this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread69095.html

Since you're saying you see white space all around the quick reply box, I'll assume you're using an ad blocker.

Basically, up until the other day, below the listing of threads were a Google AdSense ad and a rectangle banner ad side-by-side. Below it was the Quick Reply.

However, I received numerous complaints that you had to scroll past two ads in order to find the quick reply box. People also complained that they really wanted the quick reply box to be within the same scroll view of the thread post they were replying to. I also just recently received a complaint that there was "wall to wall" advertising with the two rectangle ads side by side and the skyscraper in the sidebar.

THEREFORE ...

To resolve all of those issues, I went ahead and replaced the Google AdSense ad with the Quick Reply box. This A) Removed one of the ads B) Brought the quick reply box up right below the thread listing C) Makes thread pages load faster with one less ad D) Will hopefully encourage more replies for those times when someone just wants to post a quick comment but doesn't want to bother scrolling down past the ads, or doesn't even see the quick reply box because of the ads.

From a monetary perspective, the amount of money lost by the Google ad will hopefully be …

Check out your hosts file - I don't remember where it's located. Maybe someone else can fill in the details?

Fixed.

Some emergency maintenance needed to be done to our servers over the weekend. I have our systems administrator looking into it. For some reason it's not able to determine who is in the irc server.

Well remember with Bootcamp, you can natively dual boot any Intel mac with Mac OS X and Windows XP.
