As you all must have heard, Saddam Hussain was hanged on 30th of December at 8.30 AM (Indian standard time).

Very much like Hitler, killing innocent people was what brought him down. But yes, a end of another fine man like Hitler, who believed in what he wanted but used somewhat unfair means to achieve them.
He kept praising the Allah till the end.

May he rest in peace and Allah be with him....

And one must remember, Saddam Hussein, the dedicated puppet of the US\CIA (at least until he decided not to play along any more). Think "Taliban"-- U.S. funded up until 9-11. Not only interesting but suspect. We have Allies until they are our enemies. Who' next? :-|

There comes a point of time in everyone's life when one experiences such things.

Believe in what you want, have confidence in your conviction, try to shoulder responsibilites instead of running away from them and it should turn out to be alright.

Already *too* much debate on this has happened at numerous places in Daniweb, many things happened, many bonds severed. Best this thing is not brought up again.....

So very much they way I see Daniweb ;)

There should be no "bonds severed" over this, it's a technical matter. I was only reporting an ad that seems to work incorrectly: when I am on the opposite side of the screen (screen left) it opened on its own sometimes. Did not think it was supposed to do that.

Just my opinion:

The "roll-over" Toshiba ad ("Game Zone") is very annoying AND it displays itself on its own :evil: .

I do not mind static ads, and the truth is, most heavy-users of the Internet are completely immune to their presence, hence (from what I have read lately), Internet advertising (as in ads, pop-ups, etc) is non-profitable and in some cases creates financial deficits in companies whose whole advertsing budget is used in this manner.

Simply, though, this particular Toshiba ad affects the Daniweb experience to a small degree.

Sign of the Cross (Lyrics)____Iron Maiden

Eleven saintly shrouded men
Silhouettes stand against the sky
One in front with a cross held high
Come to wash my sins away

Standing alone in the wind and rain
Feeling the fear that is growing
Sensing the change in the tide again
Caught by the storm that is brewing
Feel the anxiety hold off the fear
Some of the doubt in the things you believe
Now that your faith will be put to the test
Nothing to do but await what is coming

Why then is god still protecting me
Even when I don't deserve it
Thought I am blessed with an inner strength
Some they would call it a penance
Why am I meant to face this alone
Asking the question time and again
Praying to God won't keep me alive
Inside my head feel the fear start to rise...

They'll be saying their prayers
when the moment comes
There'll be penance to pay when it's judgement day
And the guilty'll bleed when the moment comes
They'll be coming to claim,
take your soul …

Hello everyone. I read ~S.O.S.~'s signature today and it reminded me of somthing. The essence of it was a claim that you can't doubt logic or perception. About a year ago I had some experiences that brought logic and perception into direct conflict. These experiences might be called "daylight hallucinations" by some. By this I mean I was sober (on no strange chemicals) and seeing things happen that just "can't" happen. This happened to me intermittently over a period of several months (and at times was very scary).

I'm not going to go into details here, because its somewhat personal. However, suffice it to say I was faced with a choice: whether to believe logic or my own perception. My choice was to believe the hallucinations were reality (for a while) and construct a logical framework into which my strange perceptions would fit. This, however, lead me to the conclusion that I was....erm....dead....and in the after life. Basically, this perception vs. logic conflict opened a rather large can of worms for me :surprised .

Anyway, I'm better now (and certainly alive, I think :p ). So, my question is, has anyone else here faced a similar mental breakdown and how did you cope with it?

Steven.

I have experienced what you describe. Fortunately, and particularly, this was an isolated event caused by an extreme, traumatic event (as my psychiatrist deduced, in my case); "feelings of disembodiment or observing yourself from afar"-- "am I dead, am I alive?". This was quite …

I just built a second test with pyinstaller, this time of the actual program to send to my boss-- it works; the images and intended display seems to runs perfect, all now packaged neatly into an executable.

The only aspect I must research and find out at this point is the size of the executable's display: It is about 1/3 the size of the original; this is fine really, but I would prefer to have the original size as the application is designed as a visual demo and, hence, it is obviously important that it is seen well.

Hello:

I have attempted all submitted ideas. None work. I suppose I will have to send my boss all needed files seperately to run this on his laptop: Python 2.5, Tkinter, the program and all build files. I wanted to avoid this and make it simple for him, but I guess this will work. He will just have to run it from IDLE manually when he is Japan. :-|

Can anyone suggest a "prettier" IDE for Python? I have used DrPython only (besides IDLE) but after my recent crash conflicts with DrPython I am leary of ever using it again. :sad:

I really appreciate everyone's help. I am not giving up on making an EXE this week to package my program but I am somewhat confused with what to do. Now when it tries to run, the cmd window reports that "python" is not recognized :surprised :cry: Bizarre.

Nielsen Ratings; from what I have heard\ been told, American viewers are asked to place a "box" of sorts in connection to their television sets. They may be paid to do so. This monitors and records what they watch and the resulting data is reported back and compiled. This device (box) is reportedly spread across all demographics of the U.S. as to provide a wide data pool for study.

I am trying this now via your link; so far my results are as follows:

  • 1 buildHelloWorld directory folder: empty
  • 1 HelloWorld.spec file

I think I am on the right track at least-- something is working here, but no exe file as stated in the tutorial link. When the bat file is run, it flashes for about 1.5-seconds then dissapears. I assume the bat is running up unto a certain point and cannot execute a particular command past this point, then closes.

I am going to look this over and try to figure it out.

You should have 2 files, let's say your p2e templet file p2e_test1.py modified with your code filename, and your code file test1.py. Save these 2 files in the same directory and just douple-click on p2e_test1.py

That's really all there is to it!

Otherwise make sure the Python versions match, you seem to be using Python 2.5. I avoid IDLE as an IDE, just too primitive!

I avoid IDLE also until last night (I always use DrPython to build); for some unexplained reason, after closing DrPython, rebooting my system, and tring to reopen a current project, DrPython would not open :surprised :sad: -- only the flash of a black console... nothing. I panicked for a moment but was too busy to fool with this problem. I opened IDLE and continued. Cannot let myself to be slowed down when I'm in the deep zone of coding and producing well. :cheesy:

I am tring to get this exe file from my program up and running-- I find it a bit confusing. Had no idea it would take so much to produce an exe. I am learning a lot, though, so that's what is important.

Hello:

** I have been researching and experimenting with this with tutorials from many sources but can not even begin it to get it to work it seems.

I have a very small yet important Python program that I must make into an executable file within a week's time or so; my boss leaves for Tokyo to meet with a large video game company and this will be a simple game promo which will be transported via a laptop.

I have all the correct files (as far as I can tell) necessary to create a Py2Exe file but I am unable to build it: some tutorials deal only with Command Line (my system cannot find the right files using this for some odd reason + I am not greatly proficient with Command Line, unfortunately)

Everything I have read lauds Py2Exe's ease of use but I find this to be to the contrary. Making executables from Python seems like a great touch to finish off a program especially for a professional presentation. I would really like to figure this out. It is most important.

I only need assistance with the exe-- the program is in itself complete.

Thank-you in advance very much to anyone that can help me solve this.

Believe me, coming up with the banned words list for that filter was not an easy process and involved many late night debates.

I still have the scars :)

LOL-- funny, that :) ;) . Wish I could've been involved in that process; it probably was very interesting considering the multitude of cultural backgrounds on Daniweb. Take for example the U.K. and the United States: there are many similarities, obviously, considering our historical connections, language, Western culture, etc-- but then, at the same time, there are so many differences between the two that no representative of either country, respectively, would be totally aware of all of the differences. I assume it would be the goal to find the mean set of average language expressions that would be shared globally (at least in English). Good work.

mattyd 89 Posting Maven Featured Poster

This whole subjectiveness associated with everyone having their own language standards is what forced us into using a bad words filter instead of allowing each moderator to moderate with personal opinion.

Oh, I see, that makes sense. But, not to create an argument or anything, it seems whoever decides upon the said filter settings holds the ultimate subjective power of censure do they not? Good thing <Daniweb> has trusted and proven leadership, hence, greater-than-average objective-based standards. Rationality. :)

I know it must be difficult, juggling the "language standards" of 1000's of members from around the world and finding a decent, common ground that most will accept and abide by.

cscgal (and mods)-- you are doing an excellent job with managing this site and I learn a lot from observing your impartial professionalism :cheesy:

Note: I actually support strict language filtering in public formats such as this, although I cringe at the idea of Censorship in any form.

Just a thought, I have used that trick before. You can use

canvas.move(canvas_object, xAmount, yAmount)
root.update()

to move the object you created right off the canvas to hide it. Then bring it or another object back.

vegaseat:

This is a cool idea (I love programming "tricks") but it doesn't seem to work. Nothing I have tried for this problem seems to work or even get recognized. The buttons themselves work in that they display the "HIT" blackjack cards from the user\ player, but beyond this... nothing. I really just need to have the button available for any time a player wishes to recieve an additional card during his or her deal. I have tried everything I know of. I thought I could allow one card on one hit dealt, destroy the button, then it could be made available for another "HIT". This is not ideal. I wanted to code one button to accept three "command=", that is, one of each of three cards a player could request if wanted\ needed to achieve a blackjack. This though is an illegal error.

I have tried defs, lambda, delete, destroy, hide, forget. :confused:

I am learning so much :) and I know that when I solve this particular issue with GUI\ Tkinter I will never have to worry about it again in the future. :cheesy:

I have addressed this problem sometime ago; I have either misplaced, misunderstood, or never received a response to this issue so therefore I am again attempting to deal with a Python issue:

I am towards the end of a build, and I am dealing with button commands, something that was not necessary to finalize in the program until this point. I need to either:

  • Code one button widget to allow multiple command arguments, that is, the same button is capable of issuing unique event commands at different points
  • Or, I need to be able to destroy or delete the said button so I am able to reload and redisplay it bound to a single, unique command (example: only one button is seemingly displayed from the user's point-of-view, but it is actually 3, seperate "buttons" that perform 3, unique command events.) This does not seem to be the method to use, but unless I can determine a cleaner method such as one button with multiple command references allowed, I see no other way at this point.

~Thank-you in advance for any responses\ ideas

I am still trying to discover a way to at least destroy-delete-hide- or forget () a Tkinter button\ widget. I have searched this forum and all over the 'Net; this stands as inconclusive at this point. depends on how that word is used. "I'm pissed off" is one thing, but "are you taking a piss" is quite another. Of course I realize filters probably can not distinguish the difference; its a judgemental call that only a human can make. If I saw it in one of the forums I monitor I would probably overlook the former but edit out the latter.

Yes, I agree with this-- its all in the way it is used\ meant. But, then again, I know people who find words I find socially acceptable in all circles such as "damned" as highly taboo. I try to respect this (while around these particular people) but I do not understand it. It is all very subjective.

It is not only single words or certain phrases in today's society but it extends to whole topics or themes; I guess I should think twice before posting something. I should think at least twice before speaking aloud. This over-thinking, though, often leads to me not posting at all on something or not giving my opinion as it might "offend" someone. So much for having personal views and strong stands on religion, politics, or culture. :sad: What has happened to this world?

The game sounds really cool. See if this is what you're after:

from Tkinter import *
import random

class MyFrame(Frame):

    def __init__(self, master):
        Frame.__init__(self, master)
        self.buttons = [Button(self, text="1", command=self.switch), \
                        Button(self, text="2", command=self.switch), \
                        Button(self, text="3", command=self.switch)]
        self.b = random.choice(self.buttons)
        self.b.grid()
        self.grid()

    def switch(self):
        self.b.grid_remove()
        self.b = random.choice(self.buttons)
        self.b.grid()

mainw = Tk()
mainw.frame = MyFrame(mainw)
mainw.mainloop()

This allows the user to randomly switch amongst three different buttons. Yours wouldn't be random, of course.

So about the game: if the user hits the button, he gets three cards automatically? I was at first picturing the user hitting the 'Hit' button as many times as he might want, until he busts or wins. But from your description, I'm not sure.

Jeff:

Thanks for the code-- I will try this out today.

About the button and player use: The player may request up to three cards if they need or choose to do so. Mathematically, they may not need of want to get any additional card(s) beyond the first two cards. Say, for example, one is a King\ face card (10) + the second card (both of these two dealt automatically by the machine) , an Ace (which could be a "1" OR an "11", depending on the other card). This is "21", a natural Blackjack.

They can now choose up to three more cards if they wish (or none) for a TOTAL of five, displayed cards. The computer opponent the "dealer" also may have up to five, total …

I believe that what is happening is that btn1 is being set to the first instance of Button, which is then packed (I prefer 'grid', BTW). Then btn1 is set to the second instance of Button, which is also packed. The reference to the first Button is then lost; your code has no way of accessing it, even though Tk continues to maintain a reference to it on its parent frame.

I don't know why pack.forget() doesn't fix that problem.

But if I understand your intent correctly, you want to switch out the button text and image, but not the button itself, yes?

One possibility is to use a textvariable for the Button rather than static text. It might also be possible to change the image on the fly.

See http://infohost.nmt.edu/tcc/help/pubs/tkinter.pdf for info on using textvariable.

Sorry for the partial solution; hope it helps.
