I found Chruchie's post on how to keep a computer clean. I'm working on that now. I've also run Hijack This, and here's the log. It should be clean, but won't know until one of you looks at it for me.

Also, now that I've eliminated Spyaxe, I want to keep my machines clean. I know there's a thread here that suggests which programs to load to do this, but I can't find it specifically. Can anyone direct me to that thread?

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Ok, now I found the right thread to place this..!

I know that it's been some time since I first posted this, but I wanted to be thorough in what I did. And I very much appreciate all the help I received here from several folks.

I followed all of the instructions to eliminate Spyaxe, and it seemed to do the trick as far as getting rid of the popups, and having my homepage taken over. However, I still saw Spyaxe as a program in my Programs Start menu. (I've been running XP Pro on an HP Pavillion 9795c - yeah, my desktop machine is a little old, but effective for my apps.) And, my computer was still running very slow. So, after running the various programs several times, I just decided to reformat, and reload all of my software.

The reload was successful, and now my computer is once again running up to speed. I only have one question...how do I get rid of my McAfee Active Shield? When I reloaded everything, I know I made one mistake. I started with my old HP System Recovery disks, which reloaded Win ME (what crap!). This is where the McAfee was loaded. I should have gone right to the Win XP Pro load, but by then, I thought, well, I'll just continue configuring, then select upgrade to the XP Pro. I then loaded my Norton Corporate AV, and all was fine. Except that McAfee pops up a dialog …

Yes, I had arrived at (-40) as the denominator also. It was easier to work by multiplying out the (8) and (-5). Thanks.

Now, how did you manage to post using proper math notation, such as the integral signs and ranges. Did you do this in another program, such as Word, and cut and paste? It does make the problem much easier to visualize.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Oh, and the constant, "+C" is not needed at this point. That's the next chapter on indefinite integrals.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

I did begin by rewriting as (5/8)*x^(-6). And actually, in one instance of working the antiderivative, I arrived at (5/8)*(x^(-5)/(-5). I made a stupid error in my math from that point, which resulted in a wrong answer. Now I've got it. I'm glad to see that my methodology was correct.

I haven't tried the second one yet, but in reviewing what you wrote, I believe I again made stupdi math errors which resulted in wrong answers. I think it just gets to the point where you see the situation so many times that you can no longer look at it objectively.

I appreciate the advise. I don't like proceding untiil I understand the present, so this will get me going again.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Thanks, I figured someone here might want to take a shot at it, but I didn't want to post in the wrong place.

I'm not doing this for any class, I'm just reviewing my calc and physics to refresh my mind and get me back in the loop. The problem is fairly simple, but it's really giving me fits. It comes out of an older textbook, "Calculus, with Analytic Geometry", second edition by Earl W. Swokowski, page 250, exercise 7...I need to evaluate the definite integral from 1 to 2 of 5/(8)(x to the 6th power) dx. From my notes from years ago, I know the answer is 31/256, but I keep coming up with 29/256. Unfortunately, my notes have become fragmented over the years, and the work portion of my notes is gone. I'm also trying another problem...the definite integral from 4 to 9 of the function (t-3)/(the square root of t) dt. I don't show that as one of the problems I worked previously, so again I don't have my notes. I keep coming up with 55/18, when the answer should be 20/3. I believe my errors occur when raising the denominator portion of the function.

Anyone care to show me where I'm going wrong? I think once I get past these, I should be home free for another 100 pages or so.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Any help at all out there? I would really appreciate it.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

I'm covering some of my old calculus problems, and have one that I'm having trouble with, so I'm looking for a chat site. Anyone know of one?

Thanks.

My son is visiting from his Navy station in Sicily, and I bought him a laptop. Although we had turned on Firewall Protection and activated Norton Antivirus, and he was trying to be careful with the sites he was visiting, he still managed to pull in some spyware. We bought some COTS software, but it didn't fix the problem. So, after trying to isolation, quarantine, and delete the goydr spyware, I decided to run hijackthis and post the log so see if I could get some additional help from you folks, since you did a great job helping me. He did register so that he can post later, and his username is hruzaj, but he can't get to his Navy email to finish his registration. So, I'm posting for him.

Thanks in advance for any help. Here's the log...

Let me know. And thanks for responding.

That's a good idea, but I use my HP for all of my newer stuff, and I really don't want to keep changing out my hardware on this one. I've finally gotten the sides back on the case, after about a year with them leaning up against the side of my desk. I just think it would be nice to give an old 486DX or maybe an old Pentium and monitor a home.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, …

What exactly is the problem you're experiencing? You mentioned having issues, but didn't mention what they were...

Also, try FreeDOS: http://www.freedos.org

I really didn't want to post a tech issue here, but it does corrospond directly with my search for a DOS computer.

I have an HP 9795C that I set up to dual boot with DOS and XP Pro. The issue is that the setup options for the sound cards for the game I want to play, Stonekeep (which is a DOS based program), are for very old ones, such as Soundblaster 64s. I've tried all of the sound card options to see if I could get one of them to work with the sound card I have installed in my HP, and none if them will allow the sound to work (which is essential to following the game).

I figured I'd just buy a old computer and install the soundblaster card in it (I have one unopened) if it didn't already have a sound card that works. I didn't want to install it in my HP.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZmmod] C:\PROGRA~1\ezula\mmod.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

O9 - Extra button: Advisor - {62CC2E89-A512-4453-B155-6549CC6C77EB} - C:\Program Files\COMPAQ\Compaq Advisor\bin\rbaLauncher.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

Reboot and delete the C:\PROGRA~1\ezula<----folder

I checked these lines and ran the Fix Checked. Reran the scan, and these lines are verified gone.

I must have deleted the C:\PROGRA~1\ezula<----folder before I posted here, because this folder was already in my recycle bin.

Anything else I should do?

I'm working with an old computer of mine to get it up and running in DOS, but there are some deep issues with it. I would like to get another that will work so that I can run these programs I have (specifically, Stonekeep. I wish it would have been upgraded for windows 98, and beyond.).

Minimum requirments are a 486DX/33 with a sound card (preferrably Soundblaster 64), some RAM, video card, and a 15" monitor. The system must be able to boot up. If it has a CD ROM and 3.5" floppy that would be great. I have keyboard and mouse.

If you can help me out, please post here.

Thanks.

That deletes selected code, not a project or file! Let's try it again ...

Thanks for the input.

When I tried to use Edit/Delete before, the Delete function was grayed out. This time it was available, and I was able to delete the file I wanted. I first went to the folder, and deleted the file, then came back to C++, selected the filename I had just deleted, and was able to delete it out of the project.

I've been trying to recreate the situation with Delete grayed out, and haven't been able to do it so far. I suspect a couple of things (and will continue trying);

1) I may not have properly highlighted the file I wanted to delete
2) The I may not be able to delete the last file in a project.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Delete the files from within VC++, then go to the project folder and kill them there too.

My problem is that I couldn't find any command from within VC++ to delete the files. I did go to the project folder and delete them there. How do I do it from within VC++?

hruzam 1 Light Poster

I've been having some fun with early programming and have created several projects with various attempts at some failed programs. I wanted to redo, with new file names, some of these with new attempts. However when I try to delete the bad files in a project, the project stills lists them. I know it's probably something simple I'm missing, but when I searched MSDN for deleting and editing projects, it keeps sending me to a subject called VSS Explorer. This appears to be something I don't have (and I probably don't need). I just want to delete unused files in a project.

Any help?

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Thanks, caperjack. I'll do it tonight.

I tried the other spyhunter program, but was reluctant to make the purchase to fix the many "hits" until I had reviewed this site more and had seen what others had done for a fix.

I traced some of the eZula back to a program that's been installed in my programs called TopTool iLookup. I went to Add/Remove programs, but it's not listed there, and there is no uninstall function.

Any ideas?

hruzam 1 Light Poster

I've been using Aol's spyware, and it kept coming up with Ezula. I'd delete it, and it would be back the next week. I did a search to see if I could find where it resides, and didn't find it, but about two weeks ago, it quit popping up. Just to be sure, I did another search of my entire computer, and this time told the search to look in hidden folders and files. I found 8 instances of eZula buried in files, including folders I can't see in my Program File Folder.

Has anyone else run across this thing, and how can I get rid of it. And where did it come from?

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Hey Dave,

Thanks. It's working just fine, and I'm back in the programming business. Can't wait until I start doing pointers.

don't worry if you back it all up, you won't break anything and we can always help

Again, thanks for everyone's help. I really enjoy tinkering with this on the weekends.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

Again, I will backup my system before doing anything, and I have considered just copying everything from the master to the slave. But I was concerned about the restoration of the slave to the master, if it would reinstall all of my programs, as well as my documents. If it doesn't, that would mean a ton of programs to restall, some of which I don't have the installation disks for anymore.

The rest of your instructions are pretty clear. Looks like I'll be busy this weekend.

hruzam 1 Light Poster

The issue of the partition resizer could come up as some point, but I wasn't too concerned about it yet. And I will backup my system before I start, just in case.

I haven't visited the multiboot site from MS yet, but will do so before I do anything.

I thought about installing DOS on my slave, but it's already been formatted for NTSF. I don't think that format will take DOS. I can reformat the slave and install DOS, but I wasn't sure if I could partition off a 2GB section, then have the rest of the HD space be NTSF.

I've finally pulled out my old Visual Studio 6.0 and installed C++. I've done some very low level C++ programming years ago, but I've never used this program before. I've loaded the MSDN and searched on how to start a program. However, after about 3 weeks of migrating from one thread to another, I still don't know how to start a simple program. I have an older Deitle and Deitle "How To Program", Second Edition with some sample programs that I'd like to try, but I can't get them to compile and run.

MSDN details how to use Microsoft Wizards, the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) and the Active Template Library (ATL). Wizards, like the MFC AppWizard, the MFC ActiveX ControlWizard, the ISAPI Extension Wizard, and the ATL COM AppWizard, but I don't want to do any of these. I just want to start a new project, enter the code myself, compile and run the thing.

What am I missing?

This is my first time posting here, so be gentle.

I have one computer loaded with XP Pro, SP 2. I had one 60GB HD, and added another 60 GB as a slave. I have an old DOS-based game I wanted to run (Stonekeep). It runs best in DOS, but I've had it up in Win 95 and 98, but it's quarky.

I wanted to configure my system as a dual boot, with DOS and XP Pro. My reading tells me that I have to load DOS first, then XP. I've loaded a lot of stuff on my computer, and would hate to lose all of that. I do have an external 160 GB HD that I can back up to, but I'd like to avoid that. So, my questions are:

1. Is there any way to partition my HD and load DOS onto that partition without have to reload XP?

2. If I do back up the XP HD, then perform the DOS and XP installs, will the restore from the backup overwrite the DOS?

3. Will the restore reload all of my programs that I've backed up, or will they have to be reinstalled?

Thanks for any help.
