My friend presented with this PC problem (really it's not me). His machine (Win XP Pro) is popping up with error messages prompting him to shut down about every 3-4 hours, saying something about these files: C:\DOCUME`1\MARKAN`1\LOCALS`1\Temp\WERcce2.dir00\services.exe.mdmp C:\DOCUME`1\MARKAN`1\LOCALS`1\Temp\WERcce2.dir00\appcompat.txt He's tried manually emptying the Temp folders, updating virus definitions and running …

I'm sure you have multiple programs running in the background that kicks in periodically during the defrag. When that happens defrag waits for it, then starts over. That's why it never ends. Close off background programs one by one and run defrag agian.

I agree. I also upgraded from ME to XP (a long time ago) and no doubt I wiped the drive and did a clean install. Plus, you want to use this opportunity to back up your files anyway (and junk the ones you really don't want). BTW tez, what processor …
