Thank you for your concern and assistance. The fix for this problem is below.
I had to contact via email Microsoft Online Customer Service. These were the fixes I had to do.
STEP #1:
From your description, I understand that you have encountered some troubles when trying to download the three Updates ((KB901214) (KB903235) (KB898461)) from the Windows Update site. I also understand that it fails to install manually. The first attempt to get these updates was on June 28th and the
re have been a total number of 143 failed attempts for these same 3 updates. I'm sorry to hear about the inconvenience you are experiencing. Please be assured that I will try my best to help you resolve the issue. However, if I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to correct me.

After reading the Windows Update log file, I found that you have received an error code 0x80246008. This error most likely occurs when the current account does not have permissions to install Windows Updates, or the Windows Update temporary folder has been corrupted. We can take the following steps
to get the issue resolved.

Step 1: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please be assured the folder will be created again when we visit the Windows Update site again.

Try this, as this was my problem in not being able to access certain websites. Do a search for your folder called HOSTS, then right click to open it using notepad and you should see only this line in it:
127.0.0.1 localhost
If there is anything else in that file delete it because it is what is causing your DNS error. Then save the file so that it will only have 127.0.0.1 localhost in it. No idea of what is wrong with Messenger, maybe this will fix it too.

My Printer and Faxes folder shows empty and the File - Server Properties cannot display anything because "Print Spooler is not running" so I cannot delete the epson drivers.
Trying to add a printer thru the "add a printer" link or using the epson cd doesn't work.
Where would these drivers be kept on the pc? Maybe I can just delete them there?

I closed the virus protection and then also failed to get the updates.
Using the task manager, I, then, not only closed my AVG, but also the Microsoft Anti-Spyware, SpywareGuard, SpyBotS&D and Spywareblaster programs to see if I could get these 3 updates: Update for Windows XP (KB898461), Security Update for JView Profiler (KB903235), Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214 ... no such luck. I still cannot get these updates.

Problem was solved by rolling back to a previous version and archiving.

And this problem did not happen with Tiger.

Thanks.

I have an Epson Stylus CX5400 that quits working on my eMachines W2646 XP SP2 Home Edition pc every so often. Usually it is some problem with Epson's own ink that causes the problem and I have to keep replacing the ink cartridges.
This time, the pc decided it no longer would recognize that the printer is there. I have repeatedly re-installed the dang thing only to again delete it. It keeps telling me that it cannot print until a printer is installed and do I want to install one? And then it says it cannot install as the print spooler is not in service. I tried following the instruction from this site (http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQPrinting.htm) by using the Command Prompt window and typing the command:
"net start spooler"
which did not solve my problem. I also went to Epsons site to get the most recent driver. I am totally stumped.
Please help me.

I have repeatedly tried manually and thru auto updates to get the 3 most recent updates at microsoft and each time it fails. I cannot get these 3 updates: Windows XP family Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214) Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Windows Update website
Windows XP family Security Update for JView Profiler (KB903235) Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Windows Update website
Windows XP family Update for Windows XP (KB898461).

I have these programs on my pc (eMachines W2646 XP SP2 Home Edition) and know there is no adware, spyware or viruses: the free anti-spyware program that Microsoft bought from Giant (Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta 1 version 1.0.614, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1, SpywareGuard version 2.2.0.1, SpywareBlaster version 3.4.0.0, SpyBot Search And Destroy version 1.4, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (Grisoft) version 7.0.323, and Reg Organizer version 2.5.

I didn't have any problem getting updates either way before these updates.
Any idea what could be preventing my pc from getting these updates either manually or via auto update?

Apple discussions told someone else who had problems to delete .plist and I am not sure but think it was .plistpreferences or some such similarly named and think it was in printer folder.

Starting from the HD and going thru folders and files... /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist does not exist on this mac
Is it invisible when looking this way?

BTW ... It is not JUST a printer problem here... also is OS X 10.3.8 administer , hp deskjet 940C, and startup disk issues ... dunno if they are all related or each problem by coincidence.

Have you tried removing and readding the printer from the list in the Print Center?

Yes, many times, we have added and removed the printer. We have deleted the printer .plist as well.

I am a windows user. My husband has both a laptop and a desktop, both 10.3.8. The laptop has no problems. The desktop, after d/ling 10.3.8 update, told him he doesn't have permission/privilege/admin to do anything with HP Deskjet 940C printer. He has the most recent driver. Learned how to get in as root and found root is ok to print. My husband is the only user on the mac and is admin. He tried fixing permissions with tools and said permissions fixed - but no difference. He keeps getting messages saying the start up is almost full and he needs to remove stuff. He says there is almost nothing left in start up. He went back and re-downloaded update. Nothing makes a difference. I have no problem messing around in windows registry, but whatever mac calls their system stuff - neither of us is familiar. We need very detailed help - if anyone has any ideas ... Thanks

I cannot use Microsoft Works on my XP Home SP2 Emachines W2646 because it says I don't have permission due to a missing EULA. Is there someplace I can get this? Otherwise I have to either delete the program from my pc or completely reinstall windows using the recovery cds I got with this pc.

I love my avg. I have it on both computers, 98SE and XP Home SP2. The free version is the only virus program that has detected viruses before they can hurt either pc. Norton Pro 2004 caused so many problems on my 98SE that I had to reinstall windows. I have tried McAfee and Symantec/Norton, esafe, escorcher and McAfee's freebie called stinger and Grisoft's AVG is the BEST.
