What is your take on the whole Long Tail thing, especially from the perspective of how it changing the way that the 'little man' uses the power of the Internet to reach a market?

What evidence is there that the Long Tail is working, today, right now?

What sites are making it work, is it social recommendation mechanisms in action, is it a mashup method of piggy backing on other services, is it viral marketing campaigns?

I'm not thinking of your typical set up an eccomerce site and go, or plug in some CRM and it will work, type schemes here. Rather sites and services that are drawing upon the more innovative and aspirational methods to get noticed, implementing new distribution models and methodologies, that kind of thing.

If you were compiling a list of the definitive Long Tail players and technologies, who and what would be on it and why?

A serious response, if I may:

There are mod tryouts, they are called 'all your postings since you joined up' and are ever ongoing.

We actually do keep an eye on members who are helpful, knowledgeable, hard working, friendly, stick to the rules yada yada yada. When someone catches our eye in a forum or category that is not already over subscribed with mods, we pounce with an invite following the in-house debate for suitability.

Obviously it is important for existing mods to discuss such things as we work very much as a team and the new mod has to be able to fit in.

Not a lot you can do. In most cases it drops to the bottom and rots away without leaving any trace. The things are miniscule after all.

I've not had any cause permanent damage as of yet.

Is it just DaniWeb, or are you getting this behaviour at other sites as well?

Healthy debate is always a good thing, at least it is getting the issue out in the open and ideas exchanged.

Personally I do not see it in terms of winners and losers, I think we all win by having such discussions here. And for that, I thank you for your input, as always...

I had never heard of them until I left the confines of Sarf Lunnon (South London for the uninitiated) for South Yorkshire.

And, for the record, both iamthwee and me (who is nearly fortythwee) are joking, Mr SOS!

Here in the English countryside, we get insects known as 'thrips' during harvesting time. The things are tiny, 1mm or so, little black specs.

Trouble is they are so small that they get everywhere, including inside the LCD screens of our laptops, and desktops for that matter. Damn annoying when you don't suffer from dead pixels bu live ones instead, that wander all over the darn screen.

They die quickly enough, but then it depends where they die and where they stick...

Not seen anything like that here either.

Well, if something asked you for a URL during registration one assumes you were to trying to register somewhere, and that somewhere would be the blogging system. Blogger, TypePad, hey even DaniWeb!

If you wanted to start a technology related blog then doing so here at DaniWeb is really easy. But we don't allow fluffy, non-tech related, own-site promoting type blogs here - they have to have some relevance to the DaniWeb membership.
