I know, and I do not advertise or plug my blog in any of the publications I write for. I wish I could, but things just don't work that way unless the blog is associated with the publication or publisher itself :)

What I do is use the syndication and seeding tools that are available for anyone to use online. I advise folk entering the competition to take a look at the trackbacks for some of my blog posts and follow the URLs back to source. Which should give an idea of some avenues to exploit when spreading the word about your own blog.

As for viewcounts, yes it is based upon the number of people who click and read postings but we will be keeping an eye for cheats, and if caught cheating it's instant disqualification.

Yeah, to be honest eBay is the metric of collectable value these days. Do a search to see if anyonme else has sold similar there recently and what they got, but don't plan on retiring somewhere hot on the proceeds :)

Allnighters are a way of life for anyone working to deadlines I guess, or maybe it is just us creative types. I am no coder, I am a writer - but I create my best stuff late into the night, and always have.

Mind you, when it gets to 5am I do tend to need a big caffeine kick be that via coffee, Jolt Cola or some DoDo tablets (possibly a very British thing, never thought about it, but over the counter pep pills basically.)

Try outside of London for a different flavour of English, the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales or Moors, for example, has to rate as one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. And it's a very cheap place to live :)

As for the brown sauce, it's also known as 'chop sauce' or 'meat sauce' and is best known in brands such as 'Daddies Sauce' which probably hasn't helped pin it down much...

To me DaniWeb is an emerging community, and watching it grow and bloom is what turns me on...

Davey - I hope you feel better. It must be really hard to sleep to get a good nights rest. Have you tried alternative therapies?

I've tried everything, from acupuncture through to meditation, hypnosis and various Chinese herbal remedies. I have also been visiting the pain clinic at the hospital for 6 years, and have been on all sorts of medications. Some work better than others, the cortico-steroid injections into the cervical spinal gap, done as day surgery in theatre, worked well - but I had to have them every 8 weeks and the side effects build over time so they had to stop. Opiates work well, but again side effects prevent long term use.

In the end I have come off all the pain meds other than the odd paracetamol, and use heat/ice treatments to relieve the pain a little, together with a TENS machine that helps a bit as well.

Like all things, you get used to even quite severe pain after a while. That said, I have a fairly high threshold, as the number of tattoos I have will testify :)

There's a market town not that far from my village, and it is called Retford. When I first entered the name into a Word doc the spell checker insisted it should be 'retard' which I always thought was a little amusing...

Plus they use the 'doesn't have an editor' and 'not multiple writers' or 'not a news organisation' excuses rather a lot as well.

The real reasons are a lot harder to fathom, and I suspect quite a lot of 'boardroom politics' goes on.

I suffered a neck injury (nerve damage leading to neuropathic pain) in a motorway pile-up some 8 years ago, and as a result wake up every 10-15 minutes during the night, even if I wear the uncomfortable collar that is meant to act as a barrier between my neck and the pillow/bed to prevent numb the pain.

Sometimes I drink myself into a long sleep, but only as a last resort and maybe once a month at the most I guess...

I was born in South East London (Old Kent Road, cheapest square on the UK Monopoly board) but now live in South Yorkshire (married a classically trained Russian ballet dancer from Yorkshire.)

Afraid so. This is a support and discussion community, not a free advertising system. You are welcome to have a URL in your signature, which you can access via your control panel, but no advertising in the message itself.

See the rules specifically the 'Keep it Spam Free' one which states in part:

And because of this, the Game Development Board would IMO be geared not to 'coding problems' but higher level 'gaming concepts', whereas "I need help on my TicTacToe homework" is a C/C++ problem.

That's the way I see it, and I think it might not be a bad idea, personally. Certainly there is a whole demographic that would be attracted to such a forum, I suspect. And if it is not there, then people cannot make use of it.

Of course, if such a forum were created and remained dead as a Dodo after 3 months (or whatever) it could always be removed...

Little known fact, I helped Terry Pratchett get to grips with Usenet a decade or so ago. He was/is a member of Cix, an online community I have been long involved with in the UK. Very nice chap, came to a Cix BBQ or two I seem to recall - one when I had a Channel 4 TV crew in tow for a documentary I was involved with called 'Visions of Heaven and Hell' which looked at the online world from both sides of the good/evil fence.
