Hi Mircea, here's hoping DaniWeb presents the opportunities you desire. Welcome to the community.

Hi money no object Michael :)

Welcome to DaniWeb.

They probably don't have the luxury of advertising their blog in a PC magazine they write for?

Who knows.

I know, and I do not advertise or plug my blog in any of the publications I write for. I wish I could, but things just don't work that way unless the blog is associated with the publication or publisher itself :)

What I do is use the syndication and seeding tools that are available for anyone to use online. I advise folk entering the competition to take a look at the trackbacks for some of my blog posts and follow the URLs back to source. Which should give an idea of some avenues to exploit when spreading the word about your own blog.

As for viewcounts, yes it is based upon the number of people who click and read postings but we will be keeping an eye for cheats, and if caught cheating it's instant disqualification.

Good luck with the family, says the man who has fathered four and doesn't regret a day of it over the 19 years it has been.

Yeah, to be honest eBay is the metric of collectable value these days. Do a search to see if anyonme else has sold similar there recently and what they got, but don't plan on retiring somewhere hot on the proceeds :)

Appear on Beauty and the Geek, and lose...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I am led to believe, if family folklore is correct, that I evolved from a rock and roll concert...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I would love someone to get a bigger viewer/trackback total than me, as I would be keen to learn what they were doing differently to promote traffic to their blog.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

And it has a lot of country, but not many people wear cowboy hats...

Allnighters are a way of life for anyone working to deadlines I guess, or maybe it is just us creative types. I am no coder, I am a writer - but I create my best stuff late into the night, and always have.

Mind you, when it gets to 5am I do tend to need a big caffeine kick be that via coffee, Jolt Cola or some DoDo tablets (possibly a very British thing, never thought about it, but over the counter pep pills basically.)

Try outside of London for a different flavour of English, the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales or Moors, for example, has to rate as one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. And it's a very cheap place to live :)

As for the brown sauce, it's also known as 'chop sauce' or 'meat sauce' and is best known in brands such as 'Daddies Sauce' which probably hasn't helped pin it down much...

To me DaniWeb is an emerging community, and watching it grow and bloom is what turns me on...

As a pagan (Wiccan) I celebrate the Sabbat of Yule on December 21.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Davey - I hope you feel better. It must be really hard to sleep to get a good nights rest. Have you tried alternative therapies?

I've tried everything, from acupuncture through to meditation, hypnosis and various Chinese herbal remedies. I have also been visiting the pain clinic at the hospital for 6 years, and have been on all sorts of medications. Some work better than others, the cortico-steroid injections into the cervical spinal gap, done as day surgery in theatre, worked well - but I had to have them every 8 weeks and the side effects build over time so they had to stop. Opiates work well, but again side effects prevent long term use.

In the end I have come off all the pain meds other than the odd paracetamol, and use heat/ice treatments to relieve the pain a little, together with a TENS machine that helps a bit as well.

Like all things, you get used to even quite severe pain after a while. That said, I have a fairly high threshold, as the number of tattoos I have will testify :)

Alex, have a welcome from me as well, while you are here :)

There's a market town not that far from my village, and it is called Retford. When I first entered the name into a Word doc the spell checker insisted it should be 'retard' which I always thought was a little amusing...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I'm surprised you did not mention fragmentation. :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Plus they use the 'doesn't have an editor' and 'not multiple writers' or 'not a news organisation' excuses rather a lot as well.

The real reasons are a lot harder to fathom, and I suspect quite a lot of 'boardroom politics' goes on.

4 hours if I am lucky.

I suffered a neck injury (nerve damage leading to neuropathic pain) in a motorway pile-up some 8 years ago, and as a result wake up every 10-15 minutes during the night, even if I wear the uncomfortable collar that is meant to act as a barrier between my neck and the pillow/bed to prevent numb the pain.

Sometimes I drink myself into a long sleep, but only as a last resort and maybe once a month at the most I guess...

I was born in South East London (Old Kent Road, cheapest square on the UK Monopoly board) but now live in South Yorkshire (married a classically trained Russian ballet dancer from Yorkshire.)

I am English, although my background is not: Arab on my maternal side, Irish Romany on the paternal side.

No wonder I travel so much.

What she said.

The idea is that during the months of December and January, the total number of views and trackbacks to your blog postings for those months only will be counted. It is up to you to promote your blogs and drive traffic to them, as per the competition rules, and the more creative and successful you are at this the better your chance of winning the big prize(s) on offer.

For the record, my blog is barred from entry in this competition.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Following on from the success of our first blogging contest here at DaniWeb, we are proud to announce the start of an all new, even better competition with some truly amazing prizes.

If you’ve got something to say about IT, say it in your DaniWeb blog during the months of December and January and you could be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes. The winner will be able to choose* an item from a prize pool totaling in excess of $1500 value. Maybe you fancy a 24” widescreen LCD monitor, or how about the latest multi-megapixel compact digital camera, or even an Xbox 360 games console?

Remember, all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning some great prizes is to start blogging.

The winner will be the member whose blog postings attract the most traffic during the life of the competition. There will actually be two winners, one for the blog attracting the most views and one for the blog with the most trackbacks. Each will be able to pick their booty from the grand prize pool. As a special incentive, there will also be a great bonus prize on offer if the winner exceeds 50,000 views or 10,000 trackbacks in total.

How do you get traffic to your blog? You simply ensure that your postings are timely, original, interesting and well written while at the same time promoting them through exploring syndication options, submitting them to services …

Welcome to DaniWeb, first of all.

If you need help with Visual Basic then you need to go ask over in the Visual Basic forum.

Good luck.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Indeed.

If you find us to your liking, and we help you out, return the favor by telling a friend when they need help as well...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hi Barbiedoll, welcome to DaniWeb.

You've posted in the community intro forum which is, as the name suggests, just a place to say hello rather than get help.

You need to ask your question over in the Network Configuration forum.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

it is forbbiden to ad my we site ? why?
R.

Afraid so. This is a support and discussion community, not a free advertising system. You are welcome to have a URL in your signature, which you can access via your control panel, but no advertising in the message itself.

See the rules specifically the 'Keep it Spam Free' one which states in part:

"Do not spam, advertise, plug your website, or engage in any other type of self promotion."

and

"No affiliate links are permitted within DaniWeb. Self-promotion links are permitted within forum signatures provided they do not contradict with any other sitewide rules, such as inappropriate language or content."

There you go joeprogrammer, your challenge has been set :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

And because of this, the Game Development Board would IMO be geared not to 'coding problems' but higher level 'gaming concepts', whereas "I need help on my TicTacToe homework" is a C/C++ problem.

That's the way I see it, and I think it might not be a bad idea, personally. Certainly there is a whole demographic that would be attracted to such a forum, I suspect. And if it is not there, then people cannot make use of it.

Of course, if such a forum were created and remained dead as a Dodo after 3 months (or whatever) it could always be removed...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hey, getting these guys to fight over your business always feels like a good plan to me :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

What he said.

You have to go through the PayPal channels, that is what they are there for.

You could easily be trying to hack a PayPal account for all we know, after all.

I have snipped your email address from the posting, BTW, as we keep replies and advice in the forums here so to benefit all members.

From usenet (news:alt.fan.pratchett) harvested today:

Little known fact, I helped Terry Pratchett get to grips with Usenet a decade or so ago. He was/is a member of Cix, an online community I have been long involved with in the UK. Very nice chap, came to a Cix BBQ or two I seem to recall - one when I had a Channel 4 TV crew in tow for a documentary I was involved with called 'Visions of Heaven and Hell' which looked at the online world from both sides of the good/evil fence. The crew were rather taken aback to be confronted by the creator of an entire universe saying how wonderful the virtual world was :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I still do that, using NoteTab Pro.

Mind you, I am no web designer as anyone visiting my site will be happy to confirm :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The great thing about the web, and therefore web development, is that it is so big, and still expanding of course, that there is an opportunity to make money for anyone who actually grasps it firmly enough.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Your browser is going insane :)

There should only be one dot, unless you are logged on in a parallel universe as well.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Sorry to disturb you, but i hope you would not shout at little shy girl as i am.Can you tell me PLEASE where can i get free ringtones?Thank you in advance! Please be kind to me!

Now you see, the cynic in me says this is just spam. Not only because a similar message was posted elsewhere, but the URL snipped out of both messages points to a free ringtones site. So whay would you want to know where to get free ringtones if you are plugging a free ringtones site in your posting. Hmmmmm. :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Likewise on the welcome front, but this isn't the place for support questions. You need to find the appropriate forum and ask there, giving as much detail as possible.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

This is the community introductions forum, where you say hello and we say hello back (welcome to DaniWeb by the way) not somewhere to ask support questions.

You need to find the appropriate forum to post in, and be a little more specific...
