Can you compile programs that don't use the graphics package? Or do they also claim "could not load tlink.exe". I doubt it's because of BGI. It sounds like your compiler isn't set up properly.

I'm constantly amazed how people use an ancient compiler with an obsolete graphics library and expect it to work seamlessly with the latest operating system...

And -- with all due respect to one of our most knowledgeable members -- I'm constantly amazed that everyone thinks that just because a compiler is old it can't work! I can still build BGI programs with no problem with Turbo C++ 1.0 on up-to-date XP. Just did it without errors, warnings, nor glitches.

I think earlier WaltP said that he believed in christianity and evolution. I don't feel like going through the pages to find it.

Lazy... :icon_wink:
I understand Christianity, but I don't believe in a lot of it. As a manual for ideas on how to live, treat others, dealing with success, it's great. Learning something about historical events, it may be good, but there's still too much unknown to blindly say all events actually happened.

But I just want to know your explanation of why, in Genesis, it says that man came on the sixth day but evolution would have taken many million years. I'm not making an attack. I'm just interested to see what you have to say about it.

Humans have a need to know. What they can't actually know, they create theories and/or stories to explain the unknowable.

Genesis says man came on the sixth day because that's what Moses wrote. The story is a metaphor to placate people's curiosity, written in terms that the people of the time could understand. It's not meant to be taken literally.

Interesting. Even though it really doesn't say anything. I'm sure there are other possibilities than the "just popped" theories. And at this date, I was under the impression science doesn't have all the answers yet, therefore we don't know what happened way back then -- yet. Or is there nothing more to discover, so we must accept either POP or GOD, and nothing else? So science is now done discovering things. Kool. :icon_confused:

BGI graphics was designed for earlier Borland compilers and won't work with 5.0+. So you have to rewrite the output portions of the program to remove the screen manipulation. Or you can find a graphics package you like and rewrite the output sections.

Very well thought out. A theory is a fact. As much as the fact that I have five fingers or something.

I hope you now understand what is wrong with your statement...

I don't really want to get into a heated argument about this because I doubt either of us will change our minds and that isn't what I'm going for anyway. There's no reason people can't disagree on the issue and still be friends. So don't take anything I say as an attack.

I'm not trying to change anyone's mind -- except where they are actually wrong (theory=fact). Creation vs Evolution -- it's a no brainer to me. And if you believe otherwise, I'm interested in valid arguments why. I still may not agree or I may find holes in an argument, and if you can fill that hole, great. If not, you need to get a better understanding of your belief if you with to argue your point. IOW, by pointing out problems I'm challenging you to look deeper and solve those problems to strengthen your argument.

I personally think the Da Vinci code is a complete load of rubbish.

It's a fricking novel. Duh! :icon_rolleyes: So is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for that matter.

Nope, didn't know that. But I still would like a button probably next to Start New Thread button that marks the forum and returns to the index all in one click.

>Please let me know not ony what you think of the idea
I could probably care less.

I could care a little less, but not much...

> I doubt very few people will bother to memorize the color scheme.
Not necessarily that, but people will notice when they're leaving one section and entering another, so overall it does emphasize that DaniWeb is composed of multiple sub-sites, so to speak. In that sense, it helps to bring order to the site instead of it being one giant web of 100 forums and sub-forums and sub-sub-forums, where you never quite understand where you are in relation to the hierarchy.

I thought the index pages do that appropriately. But I've been wrong before... :icon_wink:

... and I found that this was the way that most of the larger sites which have the same problem handle it.

IMHO, you are looking for the solution to a problem that does not exist. And that really sounds just like the middle-management buzz-word-bull-crap I used to hear in countless meetings back in the day. In the corporate world, that might get you some points with a clueless boss, ...

I concur.

My bottom line is
1) if you like the way it looks, keep it.
2) if the purpose is solely as a navigation aid and nothing more, it's not necessary.

WaltP 2,905 Posting Sage w/ dash of thyme Team Colleague

Also I do mis option to mark all posts as read in the section...

Good -- two votes to put it back! The dropdown just doesn't make it because of
1) too many clicks needed
2) doesn't set you back to the index

15: GetID(students,StoreID,i);

Seven Points Against Evolution
...
I also want to say that objectively setting religion aside, evolution just seems illogical to me and I will explain why with a few examples.

1)I see two types of sciences: concrete and interpretive. Concrete sciences are like chemistry and physics. They are based one hundred percent on proven facts and nothing else is accepted....

So Einstein's Relativity obviously does not fall within the concrete sciences. And where does Maxwell's Electromagnetic equations fall? Biology?

4) Evolution is not something that can be tested. There is no test to prove it false. In order for a hypothesis to be scientific there must be some way to prove it false and there is no test for this one. That means it's unscientific.

7) Evolution has simply never been proven even after all these years.

So point us to the test that shows that Creationism is experimentally tested and therefore true.

Read up on the definition of the word "theory" and how it relates to science.

Ahh, a IBM PS/2 keyboard. Then if you locate the L key, two keys to the right you will discover a key that makes the word dont and cant actually correct, as TGreer suggested :icon_wink:

WaltP 2,905 Posting Sage w/ dash of thyme Team Colleague

Personally, I sometimes use while(1) or similar for things like menus, where choosing a menu option would cause the program to do something and then return to the menu. Then, if you want to exit the program, just return 0 to end the program:

int main()
{
   int bob;
   while(1)
   {
      cout << "Enter a number to display, or -1 to exit: ";
      cin >> bob;
      if(bob == -1) { return 0; }
      cout << bob << endl;
    }
}

This is generally not recommended, although it does work. The reason is you are burying the exit from the function/program in the middle of your code. This could be a maintenance nightmare for the team that inherits your program (or for you in 2 months :icon_wink:) It would be best to break out of the loop and return at the bottom of the function.

WaltP 2,905 Posting Sage w/ dash of thyme Team Colleague

Religion was created by humanity as a defense mechanism against the truth..

That's a load of bull. Let's assume for the moment you are correct and religion is mistaken. Then religion was created to make sense of our lives and answer questions that cannot be answered. It was not created to hide the truth, but to answer questions.

Oh, I was just joking around in that post.. I did not intend to criticize anyone.. I just didn't want to explain what had happened in the previous posts.

Yeah, right...

And I am certainly not closed-minded, b/c I was once christian.. you were never atheist.

I completely agree with Infarction.

No, I have a very open mind. I have thought about christianity and god for many years after I became agnostic. It's just that I have come to the conclusion that there is no god. It's you who is unyielding. You refuse to accept that there may not be a god. I have actually thought about it...

Thinking rarely gets to truth. Research and study get closer. Based soley on what you've said, you are in no position to tell someone their religion is wrong and there is no God. All you really know is you don't want there to be one.

Christina -- stop it!

No one is saying we should completely get rid of games. Just move them out of the Geek Lounge to a Game Lounge. That way us geeks can continue our geeky discussions because that's where we go for it! Telling us to not visit so you can play games is not productive, especially when a solution that works has been offered.

And here is where Dani gets her info on what we like and dislike, not from PMs. You think she wants a lot of whiney geeks PMing her? Not on your life!

As for "There are word games, yes, but there are also other intellectual discussions dealing with politics and religion", look at the facts:
Of the 25 posts on the first page, 13 are games. That's over 50%. And as far as I can tell, 3 discussions. Not very good odds. Used to be 3 games.

Here's what's happening for me with FireFox 2.
Setup:
Three windows open:
A) This thread with post #68 at top of window, looking at Josh's non-smiling face...
B) Wikipedia page that take a lot of scrolling to get from the top to bottom (War of the Worlds to be precise)
C) Date and Time system window, watching the clock.

Test:
Refresh window A. Immediately switch to window B and start scrolling.

Results:
Refresh starts at top of page.
At 9 seconds the page jumps to post #68
For 5 seconds, Firefox is locked and unresponsive. Scrolling stops.
About 16 second total refresh.

Retest with Opera:
8 second refresh, no lockup.

Retest with IE:
At 7 seconds the page jumps to post #68
At 15 seconds, IE is locked and unresponsive for 1 second. Scrolling stops.
Total refresh, about 18 seconds

Retest with Netscape 7.2:
Refresh starts at top of page.
At 8 seconds the page jumps to post #68
For 4 seconds, NS is locked and unresponsive. Scrolling stops.
About 14 second total refresh.

The current status of rep is ... put off until the new style is working good and bug free.

I didn't say status, I said stand. I.e., is it useless or useful.

I don't want to show who gave rep because then it would turn into a behind the scenes flame war, no?

No. For intelligent, respectful members bad rep is useful when they say something they probably shouldn't. For immature jerks, they'll just spaz out no matter what. And I'd really like to see who gave good rep. I could put them on my Christmas Card list...

In other words, if I get bad rep from Dani, SOS, etc, it means something. But from ###, ***, etc, they're just being jerks. I'd like to know if I should listen or not. Otherwise it's less than useless.

Since I am the author, I could update them... :icon_wink:

Look into iostreams.

Also, read the announcements at the top of the forum and learn to format your code.

WaltP 2,905 Posting Sage w/ dash of thyme Team Colleague

So what's the current stand on reputation. Is it meaningless? If so, fine. And if so, remove the "Rep Power" indicator from the posts.

But if it is supposed to have some meaning, we need the author known, and listed with the rep. It will prevent neg rep for the sake of giving neg rep, like I just got from someone not brave enough to identify themselves, and not smart enough to make the comment meaningful.

WaltP 2,905 Posting Sage w/ dash of thyme Team Colleague

The only people who've said they're capable of giving out negative rep are moderators, sponsors, etc, so far.

Interesting. The Power!!! I feel like a ghod! (no, not Him, one of the lesser ones, like Ra or Loki. Yeah, That's it. Loki = me!)

I can still hand out +ve and -ve rep. Maybe some problem at your side. Let Dani know of this one.

Maybe I should give neg rep for your use of -ve and +ve. It's silly! Just use + and - because it looks like you mean something else and can't type. :icon_smile:
