can you use an XMLDataSource maybe?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'm working on a website that's basically a forum software, but with a different arrangement. There are only 3 levels of posts (questions, solutions, and comments), and for the comments I want to be able to have the user highlight part of a solution to comment on. To do that, I want to just have them highlight part of the reply and it will automatically recognize the targeted area.

I've been able to get the text value using document.selection.somethingOrOther, but it does nothing about the actual position of the text in the page. The problem is that if the page contains "foobar fubar foobar" and the user highlights the second foobar, I can't tell the difference between highlighting the first.

Any help is appreciated, and I'm only worried about IE compatability (odd request, I know :P), so hopefully there's something hackish out there...

Look up how transactions work. That'll keep you from giving the same room out to two different parties. :icon_wink:

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'm an Oompa-loompa. I just decided, didn't need a test to validate it. :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The solution here is simple: don't keep him waiting for 30 years. :icon_rolleyes:

Since it's too late for that, his punishment should still stand. He was convicted and he has to pay the consequence. Also, as quintioncoert said, it's a dangerous precedent. Before you know it, it'd be down to 5 years because as we all know, "doing time will change a man..."

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Out of curiosity, why do you need to port it to C#? Why not just use VB.NET for the code base?

That said, you'll probably want to just make a table and format/fill it according to your needs.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You're missing the point.

rep·u·ta·tion –noun
1.the estimation in which a person or thing is held, esp. by the community or the public generally; repute: a man of good reputation.

2.favorable repute; good name: to ruin one's reputation by misconduct.

3.a favorable and publicly recognized name or standing for merit, achievement, reliability, etc.: to build up a reputation.

Reputation is to demonstrate you achievements, not your efforts. If you help a lot of people, it'll be visible by your post count (with some obvious outliers). If your answers are widely regarded for their quality, it'll be shown through rep.

I highly doubt anyone would do such a thing.. What would be the purpose? Simply to gain reputation in the community?

It's possible. It certainly doesn't have the shock value of Rashakil's bot, but someone might do it. We seem to have a couple people who care about it that much...

But on the contrary, you have to ask yourself what is the purpose of an IT community such as this? The reason for its very existence is to help one another... to share our knowledge, and in return be taught something ourselves... <snipped for length>

We are still doing what we come here to do: ask and answer questions. There are many other forums that do the same thing, without the reputation system. All we've been trying to say is that the rep system is a frill whereby the regular users can give a little something to …

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Sheesh, why don't you guys get that reputation doesn't equal popularity? It's for the tech part of the site. You're more than welcome to come to the Coffee House (and please do), but the main site is for technical issues and the reputation system is meant to improve that.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The point of reputation isn't for thanks. Reputation is a meter that shows how you've been recognized by the other established members at Daniweb based on the value of your contributions. Noobs who do use the rep system will give rep for a simple answer. If you want thanks, read the reply they almost always leave...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The problem with that is that somebody could write a bot to create new accounts and then rep themselves. It's been discussed before, and I think it's good enough as it is now.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The EULA for WinXP only allows you to install it on a certain number of machines (2 IIRC but I could be mistaken). That said, for your programming it's a toss up. I find that a Linux distro is great for C, whereas C# could be a pain. If you stick with Windows though, you can use VC# express, which is a pretty nice IDE. I don't know how well VC++ express would suit your needs for C though (I haven't even used it for several years...)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

So long as no real harm is done, I think finding bugs is extremely beneficial. Especially exploitable ones. Things like the XSS bug recently pointed out are very good to get fixed. Things like Rashakil's rep bot are less important and cause a stir, but I'd label it as mostly harmless (but not necessarily tolerable, entertaning as the fuss was).

Heck, I might have to start coming to the chat room :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I don't know about the < and > since it's a text property, but to hide the other month numbers you can set the font size to 0 (here's 2 ways):

<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1" runat="server"
        OtherMonthDayStyle-Font-Size="0px" >
        <OtherMonthDayStyle Font-Size="0px" />
    </asp:Calendar>
arjunsasidharan commented: You deserve a +rep for this. I never realised it. +2
Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

For IE, I think setting the title attribute will do that. I'm pretty sure that this does not work on Firefox however.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'd also point out that in your code you have both code paths setting the control to Enabled rather than one changing it to Disabled. Possibly a typo in your post, possibly in your actual code, so I thought I'd mention it.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Yeah, I was shocked when Christina had that much left. But, I don't peruse the whole site (only a couple of the forums really), so it's possible I suppose...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

hey infarction...

Definition...

Wow, someone actually looked it up! I'm honored :P (yes, that was the intended spelling, whereas many people at first take it to be a typo of "infraction")

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Depends on how your forum is written, but hopefully this will be pertinent: ASP.NET themes and skins

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Dani, you just made my day. Thank you so much for this, reputation is much more accurate and looks a lot more like it was about 7 months ago. A much-needed band-aid; reputation is now a bit meaningful.

Thanks much Dani! :)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I haven't really thought this through, but you could have handler for each of the drop downs to do a postback updating the grid view as necessary.

Most guys wouldn't enjoy dating someone who is smarter than themselves... me included.. It actually is a turn-off.

Good luck finding a girl then... :icon_twisted:

j/k, but I couldn't resist.

I wouldn't mind if the girl was smarter than me, so long as she wasn't a bitch about it.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Yeah, I get it in IE and Opera, but not FF. Nice find... :-O

soon to be fiance. :)

How does that work? I mean, isn't fiance-ship like a boolean? Either he's popped the question or he hasn't. :?:

My last car was a Nissan 240SX, but I didn't have it long enough to put any mods on it, being a poor college student and all... then I was in an accident (not my fault) and it got totalled.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

booty and little brain not much of it i don't want a girl out stand me in smartness

Psh, find a smart girl who can cook and provide you with a comfortable lifestyle. And has some time leftover in the evenings. Then you'll have it made... :P

Car I have: '97 Volkswagen Jetta
Car I want: changes fairly often, but I certainly wouldn't complain about a Porsche Boxter or Carrera. Of course, I've not actually driven one, so I can't say for sure that I want one...

ntfs-3g is being hailed as a working driver, but it's still very much in beta. You could give it a shot though (it's mentioned on joeprogrammer's link).

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You might try Fedora (which is basically RedHat for desktops) or CentOS (whish I think is akin to RedHat for free). Both of these would have SELinux (RedHat's security extensions) built in for sure.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

if not then check the jumpers on them one should be set to master ie. (the one with the os on) and the other to slave. if this does't work try putting them on separate ide channels. reguarding the ethernet controller check if that is seen in the bios to.

Alternatively, you can set them all to cable select and let the hardware figure it out. This is a lot easier, especially if you swap drives around much.

Fortran and cobol still have like a 80% share of the mainframe market

How much are mainframes used anymore? (Serious question, I really have no idea...)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I think it's just grep -v daemon /etc/group

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You'd probably want to do a postback when the first (and second) drop-downs change and update the next field accordingly. If you don't want it to refresh the whole page, you'd likely be looking at some AJAX.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

But I've been raised in what these days is apparently a rather oldfashioned way.

Unfortunately, you're probably right. And I don't think that this "old-fashioned" is gonna retro its way back to popularity any time soon...

Be more specific as to what's wrong with them. And please use code tags when posting code.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It sounds like a problem with the browser rendering the font. Let us know if using the DB helps.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

regex: href=\"[^\"]\.aspx\"

Yours was matching from the first href to the end of the second one because of the .* whereas mine allows anything except for a closing quote (and therefore stops at the end of the first one). It's not as anal as I usually get with regex, but as long as you have well-formed XHTML it should work.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'll repeat the last half of my previous post:

Do you want the result saved just for the session, or permanently stored to a data source (e.g. a database or XML file) so you can use it later? If this is the right model, how will you store a list of country-URL pairs? And what do you have done so far?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Turn your computer off at night and while at work/school. Like I'm about to do :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

So, VC5 isn't one of them. Although I think the standard says an int-compatible type or somesuch, so a pointer would fit that...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'm still not sure I know what you want, so I made a quick mockup. Are the attachments like what you want? Do you want the result saved just for the session, or permanently stored to a data source (e.g. a database or XML file) so you can use it later? If this is the right model, how will you store a list of country-URL pairs? And what do you have done so far?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It's a very broad description of what you're trying to do. Can you be more specific? Do you have a sample? And please show us what you have already.

I think that his post translates approximately to the following:

Hello. I am going to Sudan in 1 week and 5 days. It would be very useful to me if you could find a Ford Mustang for sale. My mom has taken away my current car (a Lancer), and now I want to buy a Mustang to replace it. Thanks for helping.

Disabling JavaScript would probably do it. I think the post-back is just an onClick handler (actually here's one: onclick="javascript:setTimeout('__doPostBack(\'CheckBox1\',\'\')', 0)" ). Or hit escape really quickly.
