is this a new feature? It's really neat, though becomes annoying quite fast. I have noticed while browsing for a certain thread it can get in the way and you have to move your mouse to the left or right of the screen to see the threads. It makes skimming much harder.

I've noticed it blocks either the two threads above or the two below the preview.

just my opinion.

I've always loved the last one. If you do it right, the detail is amazing.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Agreed. However, not filling up on one day will not do any good. All it means is that people will fill up either the day before or day after, causing sales increases on these days.

this could be true, and probably is true. but it could be the message we send that does the most good. If oil companies lose 3bil in one day, even if they make it back the next they're going to wonder how long they can keep making up the profits they lose if boycotts keep happening.

I was thinking in my car today, and it would probably be a good idea to have a monthly boycott day instead of just randomness which seems to be the way things are happening now. Maybe a constant blow would send a better message....

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Almost three billion dollars is a lot of money even if it is just for one day. A one day boycott is much easier to organize that saying to ride a bike or carpool etc. even though I encourage those things (not just to put a dent in the oil industries but for the other reasons too; energy conservation, good health). I don't think it will hurt to try.

I agree 110%.
Even if it is a waste of time, it's doing more than criticizing posts are. I mean, atleast we're trying to do something.

That sounds great. Especially if you're getting a CCNP. Things like implementng the new infrastructure should be mentioned somehow in your resume. Other than than, I don't really know much about what to expect or how best to proceed. Sounds like you're definitely on the right track at least.

well... that's encouraging. thanks

Well let me clarify. The company only has ~15 staff and I only work about 12hrs a week. But I'm the head IT in a department of 2 people lol.

They're giving me a lot more to do though, especially since we're implementing this new project.. they've let me make a lot of the decisions as far as what technologies and which vendors to go with.

why do plain comp/sci when you can do a degree in networking?

most unis over here let you study for a degree in networking whilst getting you a cisco type certification. You also get a work placement on mos tcourses (sandwich style)

Well the school I'm going to only offers a comp sci program. I would love to get a networking degree, though that makes me very 'area specific'. That's why I'm leaning towards IT since it's somewhat generalized, but will allow me to specialize in certain areas as well.

The degree program I'm in now allows for a focus in networking which is the path I'm taking. I take 9 Cisco classes throughout my degree program, each with an accompanying lab.

Look at degrees in IT or information systems (I think) if you're going to continue with school. And the CCIE is great to wave around and get you started. But here's the catch: the people in industry value experience over anything. A friend of mine is a network engineer at Microsoft, and I have more certifications than he does (CCNA, whoop dee do, and it expires next month). On the other hand, the guy knows his stuff, probably as good as most CCIEs in whatever he does (since the CCIE does have specializations...). As I recall, his degree is in physics or something; his credentials are based on experience. And that's what'll make the difference in the long run. I doubt you'd need a PhD at all, …

I've noticed a ton of questions asking about different degrees and college decisions in general. I figured the questions have been brought up enough to have a dedicated thread for the subject.

******************************************************************

I am really confused about what I should do after my BS. I'm currently working towards a BS in Comp. Sci. and have a few roads to choose from. I want to be the IT Director/Network Administrator for a company with multiple offices. I currently work for such a company, and I seem to be impressing the right people that could potentially lead me to such a job after my degree.

The first option I have is to go for my Masters, but I'm not sure what to get. I definitely want to get a Masters in something but I have been given different opinions, all from trusted people. The first I have is to go for my MCST (Masters in Computer Science and Information Technology). I had actually made plans for the college I want to attend for this degree. But later, I was told (by someone working in the field) that I should get my MBA? Which would do me better? I mean, I know getting my MBA would pretty much throw me into supervisor status but I want to be a hands-on guy too. Wouldn't a MCST benefit me more for doing something like this? How are masters degrees looked at by hiring officers?

Another avenue I have looked at …

i just got a dell precision 390 and put a Geforce 7950GT in it for my gaming needs. sometimes after leaving the computer idle for like 12 hours i'll come back and my monitor will just show a sort of static but not quite as scrambled, with a lavender color to it. I can't get back to my desktop or anything but after pressing the power button the static stuff goes away and i see a blue scree (like the logoff screen) with no text before it reboots.

I have my tower in an office desk. could it be overheating and causing this? Anyone have any other suggestions i should try?

Hey everyone,

My brothers and I have a router between 3 (soon to be 5 with mine and my mom's laptops) computers and our cable modem. The internet is constantly going out (a tech is coming tomorrow to look at it) and I'm searching for a free lan messaging system that doesn't rely on the internet. Our rooms are on completely opposite sides of the house and it can sometimes get annoying to walk all the way to their room just to ask if they have internet or if the router should be reset.

Thanks for the help guyses

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

hey, you recommended that book a while back. it's sitting on my shelf =)

I plan on using that for my conversion from vb6. thanks

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

well i just finished structured programming in c++ and i'm pretty confident in the material i learned. I have a really good concept on programming as far as c++ goes anyways... but how different is vb6?

It is infact my only option and it's a requirement. But they're being weird about the follow-up class (which is also a requirement). One class was taught last semester using 2005 (which i was in but dropped because the book was horrid and the teacher would ramble for 30 minutes about how much he hated Microsoft and other misc items) and the rest of the students taking vb were in the vb6 version. So now the follow-up is going to be a mix of both so the instructor said we could do the class in either/or.

This is why i was wondering how hard it would be for me to learn vb6 this summer and transition to .net before/during the fall term.

sry if that all sounds confusing.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Oh ok, but am I wasting my time learning VB6 if I know I will eventually be learning .net?

Should I not just go ahead and start with .net?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

so will learning vb6 not screw me over is learning .net?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey everyone,

I'm getting ready to take a summer class on VB6 and I was wondering how hard it would be for me to keep on track with the rest of the class while using 2005 express or something of the like? I would really like to go ahead and get my hands in a .NET environment instead of trying to learn the older version and then migrating to 2005.

and nice car by the way Duki, lovely paintjob. Did you get it repaired or was it written off for scrap?

Thanks, it was my baby. I didn't have a paintjob done to it, i just go to church with a guy who owns a sign shop so he sold/installed the graphic at cost; it was totaled =(
but luckily her insurance gave me enough to get the same car in the LT model (which is much sportier) ;)
I have been waiting for summer to put a graphic on it though.

i good at naming cars but it shurly was a write off with that amount of damage! was that the drunk driver or the granny that caused this?

This was the woman that pulled out in front of me.
The drunk driver crash, he tore off the front bumper of my mom's Montana... stupid piece of trash... honestly, who gets drunk on a wednesday night? Could have killed me and christina... luckily by the grace of God he didn't.

Hey guys, this is a calculator program.
I keep getting 0s for my answers... is there something wrong with the logic in this function:

main()
    cin >> choice;
    while ( choice != 'q' && choice != 'Q' ) {
        cout << "For first fraction\n";
        getFract(choice, 1, num1, den1);
        cout << "For second fraction\n";
        getFract(choice, 2, num2, den2);

function

void getFract(char op, int fractNo, int & num, int & den)
{
    cout << "   Enter the numerator: ";
    cin >> num;
    if ( op == '/' && fractNo == 2 && num == 0 ) {
        cout << "\nTo divide, the second fraction must be nonzero\n";
        while ( num == 0 ) {
            cout << "\nEnter a nonzero number for the numerator: ";
            cin >> num;
        } // endwhile
    } // endif

    cout << " Enter the denominator: ";
    cin >> den;
    if ( den = 0 ) {
        cout << "The denominator must be nonzero\n";
        while ( den = 0 ) {
            cout << "\nEnter the denominator: ";
            cin >> den;
        } // endwhile
    } // endif
}
Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

great i got that part working, but now i'm getting error that saying things like ifstream undeclared identifier, infile undeclared identifier, etc...

here's my openInFile function

int openInFile( ifstream & inFile , string inFileName )
{
    inFile.open( inFileName.c_str() ) ;
    if ( !inFile )
    {
        cout << "\n!!  File '" << inFileName << "' not found -- check path !!" ;
        return 1 ;
    }
    return 0 ;
}

EDIT: forgot my header file, but still getting errors about overloading functions? error C2556: 'int openInFile(std::ifstream &,std::string)' : overloaded function differs only by return type from 'void openInFile(std::ifstream &,std::string)'

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys. I have a horrible problem with passing strings in a function and using the string to open an input file. Could you guys give me a hand?

#include "pe3.h"

int main ()
{
    int ary[ SIZE ] ;
    ifstream inp ;
    string  iNam ;

    cout << "Input-file name:   " ;
    getline( cin , iNam ) ;

    openInFile( ifstream & inp , string iNam ) ;
    readData( ifstream & inp , int ary[] , int SIZE ) ;

    return 0 ;
}
int openFile( ifstream & inFile , string inFileName )
{
    inFile.open( inFileName.c_str() ) ;
    if ( !inFile )
    {
        cout << "\n!!  File '" << inFileName << "' not found -- check path !!" ;
        return 1 ;
    }
    return 0 ;
}

I get this error:
error C2275: 'std::ifstream' : illegal use of this type as an expression

at the openFile function call
