Gosh. I feel like I can't remember ANYTHING from my tests. I went to a 2-week camp in Tampa, FL and recieved my MCSE, but I always have to ask questions on how to do simple stuff. I feel like I should have waited until after college or atleast until I had more experience. My highest score of the 7 tests was an 890 :-|.

Someone tell me that I didn't mess up, lol.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

great.... okie doke. I'll do that either tomorrow or this weekend and I'll give you an update. ;)

I have another issue, which i'm assuming DNS will fix. I have a machine not showing up in our workgroup. I can ping it's IP and NETBOIS fine, but when I try to connect to it through Computers Near Me or by typing \\PCname it doesn't show up. any clue?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

thanks for the reply.

all of our static ips are 13.240.x.x and the dhcp is set to lease 192.168.x.x

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

If you don't use DNS you will have to give all pc's static IP's and programme the router with them too. Its just saves alot of configuration even for a small company like yoursevles. Its also alot more secure to use DNS. You should only really disable it if your running somthing like an internal web server.
Why do you think you should not use DNS:?:

Is this why our DHCP is acting up, maybe? Because we don't have DNS running?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Can you trace the bad adress to any workstations?:?:
How many workstations do you have?:?:
How many can you see in the DHCP list?:?:
Do workstation addresses match those in the DHCP list?:?:
Are all the workstations set to DHCP?:?:

Do they have all the correct subnet masks?

These are all things you should check.

Can't trace the addresses
roughly 25
(random)
from what i can tell
no (we're in the process of switching over to new network architechture)
yes

Hey guys,

I want to setup a print computer. It needs to open a program on our server, as the program is a resource hog, and that's what we bought the server for. I was wondering if Citrix is the best way to do this? We have terminal services running, but we want to limit what the employees can access on the server... any sugestions?

Thanks!

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

A PC reboots randomly and event viewer says due to bugcheck. What is this?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I have DHCP installed on our server, and while checking the leases I noticed a few BAD_ADDRESS entries. I delete them but they return within a few seconds. Anyone know the cause of this and how to prevent it?

Thanks!

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I work for an engineering company as the ITT. We have to maintain backups incase of some sort of issue so that we can go back and recover files.

A little while back, one of the employees burned DvDs consisting of files copied from CDs in order to reduce the number of CDs in the office.

The problem we're having is now, even in the machine that burned the disks, when files are accessed an error occurs saying the drawing file is not vaild. If we try to copy to the desktop an error occurs saying cannot copy *. Error performing inpage opperation. When the disks are placed in other computers, they sometimes aren't even recognized.

The read onlycheckbox cannot be unchecked.

Any clue on why this is happening and/or how to fix it?
Thanks in advance everyone! ;)

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i can't get to recovery consol or anything to format it. And i'm looking for something easier than moving it to another machine to format.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

How would DNS benifit us with such a small company?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Well what we have to consider is that we (people of the know) make up maybe 20% of the computer users. Think about your highschool/college/workplace. How many of them do you think could actually install a copy of Linux or take less than a month to learn Mac? Windows, in my oppinion, isn't going to die anytime soon if at all. They had the vision and therfor are way ahead of the game not only in architechtural design, but also in the business swing of things. Read "Microsoft Rebooted".

Until major computer manufacturers (aka Dell) offer more than Windows as an option, and until other OSs consider the stay-at-home moms as their primary users, Microsoft doesn't have a lot to worry about.

my oppinion ;)

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

how do i determin in Mbs how fast my connection is running right now? is there a setting in perf mon that i can set?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

wow, fast...

well that is certainly a possibility. The computer is on the 3rd floor and I am on the 2nd. That wouldn't be good... but luckily the 120GB+ i'm transfering is an old 'server' that will be taken out of use once this is through....

Any other suggestions just in case?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I have 1Gb cards, 1Gb switches, and Cat5.e ran. Why aren't I noticing a performance boost?

I've been trying to transfer 120+GB for going on 3 hours now.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

woohooooo go you!! =D

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

well hmmmf... how about Duki ;)

After trying to install XP on a machine at home, something happened and we stopped. Now, everytime the machine boots it goes the the windows setup and asks for the disk, which apparently doesn't work now. Is there any way to get rid of this and start from scratch?

Thanks

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Is it possible to change my display name to take off the MCSE?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

My company consists of roughly 25 computers. Should I bother setting up DNS on our server? We're going to be connecting to our branch office servers soon, and I was also wondering if this would play a role when uses try to connect to our server from the branch?

Thanks a bunch!

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

what exactly are you wanting to do when you connect to the route, lol :P

you said you've tried the web control?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

also try just powering it off for 60 seconds and starting it back up.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

What OS are the computers?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

right click on the files/printers you want shared and goto "Sharing and Security..."

Are they shared?

Can you see the other computers when you goto WorkGroup computers?

Right-click on My Computer and goto Properties>>Computer Name>>Change... Make sure all computers have the same thing typed under Workgroup:

Let me know how it goes.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

well, after hours of troubleshooting i decided to take the time to set up DHCP on our server. Very easy process, and was fast. Now all computers except one can successfully /renew ips from the server. This case is officially solved

thanks for the help everyone.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

I figured it out. I'm such a noob... I shouldn't be flaunting my MCSE title just yet =/. I had to do it through Manage Your Server. Thanks anyways!

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

When I create a file on the server and i login with an account called engineer and try to delete the file it says access denied make sure it's not in use or is write protected. I have the ntfs permissions set. I tried with administrator account and same thing happened. I can delete it off of the server but not over the network.

any clue?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys sorry for the delay! Work has been hectic.. going on 60 hours this week . Thanks for all of the replies!

Let me describe the network a little more in depth. When I started working here, the last IT guys for some reason had every computer hooked up with 2 nics. One with a static address for LAN use and the other on Obtain Automatically for DSL use. No router is in place between the modem and the computers. Our server isn't running DHCP yet, as I'm still setting everything up.

If all aspects of the network function except the internet then you know that you set the network up correctly, you just have an internet problem. I would suggest to go to every computer that does not have an internet connection open Internet explorer, click tools, internet option, connection, LAN settings, and make sure that Auto Detect settings is checked. Hope that works if not let me know

The LAN settings are setup to automatically detect. I tried going through the connection wizard to see if that would repair anything. Still nothing. Thanks though! ;)

If youaren't using DHCP, make sure you've setup the IP addresses correctly. IF you are using DHCP, make sure your lease timing, DNS and Gateway info is correct.

Also, are your computers able to ping each other? Are they able to ping the main server? Can the server ping the clients?

The DSL nics are set to obtain automatically. …

The printer driver you selected is either not compatible with your current version of Windows, or it may not be available. Select a compatible driver from the list, or contact your administrator for help.

I am setting up our new server. When I try to install this printer on Windows 2000 machines I get the message above. I've gone into add aditional drivers and I have the server edition installed. I also have 9x drivers installed. I can connect through the server to the printer from XP clients, but not 2k clients. I've tried drivers from HP.com, the disk that came with the printer, and driverguide.com. Nothing is working. Any clue? Thanks in advance!

-Caleb :?:

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Yes, all computers are able to see the network. I've even used different cards to make sure.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Look for the disk for norton. Here at work, when I was switching everyone from Norton to AVG (www.avgfree.com) I had to use the disk to uninstall it. Maybe that will work.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

I'm caleb, and I'm in a bind. I'm the itt for an engineering company with roughly 25 computers on the network. I'm currently in transition from peer to peer going to server/client. My problem is weird. I've researched Google for probably 90 minutes and nothing has worked. We have DSL. This is so weird, but some computers will connect to the internet but some will not. What's odd is I can take a cable directly from the modem to the computer and it still doesn't work... but I can walk into the next room with the same cable and it connects fine. It's like one side of the building is cursed or something. I've tried plugging in the modem to the switches (how it was originally setup) and combinations I probably couldn't remember... maybe I could but it's 12am and I want to get home. The computers on the 3rd floor connect fine and on the 2nd floor (where the modem is along with the server) half of the computers do and half do not. I'm begging for assistance... I'm 18 and I am the ITT department for the building. I can't look irresponsible. Please someone with more experience give me a hand. =(

Caleb, MCSE
