We (the place I work at) are getting a dedicated P2P T1 line to our main office. I'm not sure if this is going to be used for WAN traffic only, or also for internet.

If it is going to be used for internet, I want to block all P2P and bittorrent applications. I don't want anyone thinking, "Yay, T1... BitTorrent here I come!" and hogging up all the bandwidth.

My plan as of now is to use ACLs to block every port I can find that pertains to bittorrent or any other p2p client. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

Also, on a side note: how does streaming (i.e., if someone were to stream music or videos all day) affect internet speeds?

can you be more specific in your question? What exactly do you want to know?

Do you have the latest firmware version?

Check the linksys website for the latest firmware of your model router (model on the bottom of the router).

check the firmware of your router by going to 192.168.1.1 and use admin/admin for user and password. look at the top right corner and see if the firmware versions match.

If this doesn't make since, let us know and maybe myself or someone else can help if you get stuck.

do you have a router between the modem and your computers? If so make sure the latest firmware is installed and let us know if that fixed it. If you don't know how to install the firmware let us know and someone will give you a hand.

I agree with tina... though you can tell when a restaurant allows smoking because the whole place smells unclean lol.

before i got this laptop i was using a desktop replacement that my supervisor had... yeah it was powerful but had a battery life of about 45 minutes and weighed about 11 pounds! ha!

I have the swiss gear MAXXUM. I LOVE it... the backpack has tons of pockets which are deep and can hold the laptop with 2 text books and a notebook easy. Only downside is, it's made for 15.4" displays and smaller.

That depends on how you were to look at it. Yes $1500 may be alot of money especially to a college student however if you were to look at getting a computer with the equivilent Specs from another company its a pretty fair statement to say it would be more then $1500.

meh, $1500 deffinately isn't cheap for college material requirements. For business related and beyond the typical word processing of most college students (you know.. us geeks), $1500 could possibly be borderline low-end. My company just bought me a Dell M65 which came to about $2400; however, this included my wireless mouse, backpack, 80GB portable external drive, MS Office Basic 2007, Visio 2007, a 1 year subscription to CompuTrace, and 3 years Dell Gold-Tech support... soooo you can probably forget the first part of this post now that I think about it, because this is one of the best laptops Dell offers and without all of that stuff you could probably get it for about $1800 (with dell rep discounts).

since i got my laptop i'm rarely on my desktop (which is only about 2 months old).

Hey everyone. I'll post the detailed overview of what I've tried and what hasn't worked tomorrow. It's late, and I've been struggling with this for a few hours.

In short, I have a Linksys WRT54Gv5 and two Linksys WRE54G (one v2 and one v3). I had already setup the router and a single range expander with WEP. Today, Christina and I went out and bought another range expander (the v3). I went through the same configurations and disabled security for the time being, but nothing works. I can configure one range expander with the router, but as soon as I cut on the other one (which is configured as well) I can't ping, can't connect, nothing. For now I just want to know if this is even possible?

Any advice? Like I said, I'll post a really detailed reply tomorrow, I'm just too tired right now :(

Atiris runs about $7,000 (not to mention the $8,000 for training). Altiris is coming in at about $900 for 125 employees.

perhaps the HDD has a driver you need to install. check the WD website.

ah that figures; XPS isn't considered business class. If you want a computer with XP installed from the factory try looking at a Dell Latitude or something of the sort. Most business sections of companies should be shipping computers with XP till the end of the year; I know for a fact Dell is.

Wow, that's strange. I've yet to find a Dell here in the states that you can distinctly hear.

Most of my experiences with Dell are in the business section. I have noticed a big difference between the Dimension and the Precision series systems.

Maybe different manufacturers in the UK?

we have Dell Dimension 400 series at work, most of which are capable of running our CAD software. You can't blame the vendor for the lack of funding the school's IT dept has. We just got new dell's in my Cisco lab, which are slow as molasses; after checking the specs I found they have 256MB ram.

Overheating could have some truth to it, but it's the price you pay for a quiet computer sometimes. I haven't personally had any experience with Dell's overheating, but hey... I'll sacrifice half a year of life if it means the other 4 years you could barely hear the computer. Granted, if you have an office and the PC isn't in your bedroom then you'll have a different scenario than I do.

I'll run some heat tests on my Precision and let you guys know what it comes out to for comparison.

As of now you can order a computer from Dell with XP installed. They will be shipping computers with XP until the first of the year.

When I bought my laptop from Dell (only a couple weeks ago) they had the option to order it with XP Pro installed and it comes with a Vista upgrade disk... this way you upgrade when you're ready and not a day sooner. :)

If you're going to be walking around with your laptop I would go get an XPS (starting weight - 4.3lb) and make sure you get accidental coverage on it. That way if someone bumps into you and you drop it... no worries; it's covered!

I think the only way to get XP on your system through Dell is if you shop in the Business section... but I'm not sure about that.

Have you tried "Add Hardware" in control panel?

I would also suggest contacting the manufacturer.

I'm gonna do a lot of CAD editing next year. Multimedia.. meh, don't edit much but I do when I need to.

What sort of CAD? 2D or 3D? any rendering?

About 4 years ago I would debate all day long with someone who though Intel was better than AMD... sad to see the playing field change like this. AMD still has a leg up on Intel with streaming... but I'm sure that will change in the near future.

If I was going for a strictly all-out gaming machine... I would probably still go with AMD if for nothing more than their reputation in that area.

I've heard rumors of a MS computer... you pay for it monthly or something. It will be used in public places where people can come up to the computer and pay a fee for an allotted amount of time; if i remember correctly.

access denied errors in this scenario usually come from a permissions problem.

Right-click the folders containing the files and go to sharing permissions... try clicking the "allow users to modify my files" and click OK.

Can you see the files you want; you just can't access them?

i prefer dell over all vendors. Noone can touch their support or MS prices. They're the #1 Microsoft reseller in the world... you won't find a better price than dell if it's made by microsoft.

I look for INTEL to wipe the floors with AMD real soon... from what I've been told, AMD wasted all their money on ATI which isn't going how they wanted... that's millions that could have been spent on R&D. There was another half to this story... but i can't remember it :(

Yeah the Xeons and Opertons are nice... But they're also built for servers.
I recently heard them compared like this:
Xeons are designed to perform effectively while still maintaining stability. Core2Duos are just really fast.

Unless you're going to be doing a bunch of CAD/Multimedia editing, the core2duos are the best bet. Cheaper than the Xeons.

Agreed, the video card is the #1 priority... but don't go crazy. A $200 card with a $250 cpu will outperform a system with a $800 card and a $100 cpu any day.

A weird scenario a guy told me who was helping me with my grants/scholarships.

If LaBron James (or maybe some other NBA player... can't remember the name.) were to apply for the Pell Grant he would receive the highest grant given out (which is at about $1900 or $2000+ per semester). This is because even though he makes $15 million a year, his mother's income is less than $12,000 yearly. If your parents total income is less than ~$12,000/year then your personal income isn't taken into account.
