I take security and privacy issues seriously, but sometimes I despair when news stories such as that regarding Samsung TVs eavesdropping on private conversation explode across the media as happened last week. The reason for my despondency has less to do with the data privacy debate and more to do with the human stupidity one. That said, let's get the technical bit out of the way first. The privacy scare story kicked off after someone, eventually, noticed that privacy policy relating to Samsung smart TVs included the line: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other …

This isn't a typical hardware post, but I couldn't find anywhere better for it. Last October, after my previous TV packed in, I bought a shiny new Samsung Smart TV. My shortlist of requirements was: * Excellent picture quality, preferably 4k * No advertising built into the UI * Within my price range (I ended up spending £1,400 on it) The reason for my second requirement is that many years ago I bought a Hard Disk Recorder from Panasonic that had the following style of EPG. Note the advert taking up roughly 1/4 of the width of the screen. ![.](/attachments/large/0/019bd95010f4520af8a7a015a76eb4fc.jpg) …

I have taken my old Samsung DVD-recorder (DVD-HR775) out of service, replacing it with a VU+ Solo2 combined satelite decoder/recorder (set-top box). On the DVD-recorder I have recorded a lot of movies and TV-shows. I have the ability to copy it to DVDs (which is the preferred method), but a more efficent way would be to open the box, connect the hard disk to my Ubuntu desktop system (I believe it has a SATA-connection) and transfer the files to it. I think the box is running some sort of Linux flavor, and that the file system on the hard disk …

A jury in the US has, after just three days deliberating, ruled that Samsung must pay Apple more than $1 billion in damages. The lawsuit had focussed on alleged patent infringements by Samsung in terms of both software and design relating to Apple's iPhone and iPad devices. Although not all of the claims made by Apple were upheld by the jury, it did agree that several Samsung devices had violated the intellectual property rights of Apple. At the same time, claims by Samsung that Apple had breached several of its patents were dismissed by the jury. ![dweb-samsungbillions](/attachments/small/0/dweb-samsungbillions.jpg "align-right") Samsung is …

Hi all. I have got a code that detects the most mobile devices except Samsung Galaxy S3 (there may be other exceptions as well). Please advice how is it possible to detect the device Samsung Galaxy S3. My code is: <script type="text/javascript"> var isMobile = { Android: function() { return navigator.userAgent.match(/Android/i); }, BlackBerry: function() { return navigator.userAgent.match(/BlackBerry/i); }, iOS: function() { return navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone|iPad|iPod/i); }, Opera: function() { return navigator.userAgent.match(/Opera Mini/i); }, Windows: function() { return navigator.userAgent.match(/IEMobile/i); }, any: function() { return (isMobile.Android() || isMobile.BlackBerry() || isMobile.iOS() || isMobile.Opera() || isMobile.Windows()); } }; if(isMobile.any()){ alert("The device is mobile!"); } </script> Thank …

DaniWeb recently reported how Apple had won a ban on the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Europe and even published the rather generic-looking design drawings at the heart of the case. Now a Düsseldorf regional court judge, Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann, has heard the Samsung appeal against the ban and concluded that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 gives a "clear impression of similarity" to the iPad: the result being that the ban has been upheld, but only in Germany rather than being across the EU. If reports are to be believed, Samsung could fight back with an attempt …

OK, so Apple has successfully persuaded a German court to ban the sale of the Galaxy Tab Android tablet on the grounds that Samsung has copied the design of the iPad. The legalities of which revolve around certificate of registration number 000181607 in the Community Designs Register that protects the ownership of design within the boundaries of the European Union. DaniWeb can reveal exactly what it is that Apple thinks Samsung has copied, and we hope you are sitting down because the actual community design images contained within that certification are basic to say the least. In fact, we would …

Apple thinks that the Samsung Galaxy Tab looks a lot like the iPhone and the iPad, from the appearance of the device right down to the packaging it comes in. Now it seems that the courts agree. Well, one of them at least. The Dusseldorf District Court in Germany has awarded a preliminary injunction in favour of Apple which, get this, bans the sale of Samsung Galaxy Tabs throughout the European Union (with the strange exception of the Netherlands where a separate court action is underway). Customs officials have apparently been given orders to seize shipments of the tablet, and …

There's only one iPad (discounting model variations) but there's a small army of Android tablets demanding your attention and your money. The question is, are any of them better than the market defining Apple? DaniWeb goes hands-on to find out... If you think about tablet computing these days then the chances are what you actually mean is the Apple iPad vision of a slate-based device. That's not altogether surprising when you consider how long Microsoft, and others, had been trying to break this market only to falter and fail. The iPad, without doubt, energized a genre by pretty much redefining …

Hi there I just bought a new Samsung printer model no. CLX-3180 series. It is a multifunction color laser printer. The disc that Samsung issued me with for installation is not working. I have attempted to install it by doing what it says: 1. I set up the printer and connected the printer to the wireless router via ethernet cable. 2. I searched using wireless setup option on the disk for the computer on the network. It reported back that it could not find it so I was unable to install it wirelessly as it says it is not connected …

There is an acknowledged problem with the Samsung NC10 netbook and other of their netbooks. Mine was about 3 months out of warranty. Problem: Screen goes blank at higher brilliance levels. Disclaimer: The following will work but is not a repair! The logic and troubleshooting might be a good laugh for someone more knowledgeable than I am. No charge for the entertainment. ":o) I'm guessing: The LCD display cable (bundled, not ribbon) has a separation in a critical conductor. At higher current levels (?) the break opens and stops conducting causing the screen to go bright. (?) I was given …

Coming soon from Samsung: a new tablet computer designed to compete in the iPad market. With what seems like inescapable, up-to-the-minute coverage of dropped call banter swirling around a tech universe with Apple as the sun, you almost forget that other brands exist. The most recent angle on their reception debacle has been the “But they’re doing it too!” defense, Steve Jobs’ attempt at dragging down his competition in the same sinking ship of arrogant excuses by releasing comparative antenna results of other smartphone brands. The photos depict users gripping a variety of phones like rigor mortis has set in and insinuate that Apples loyalists holding their iPhones like hulking gorillas manhandling a plantain are …

For a while it looked like the Google threat to pull out of China was just a load of hot air, and pretty late hot air at that considering it had taken years for the search giant to realise that state censorship is a bad thing. Cellphone manufacturer Samsung has taken everyone by surprise by announcing its own operating system Bada - Korean for 'ocean' - will launch in December. The intriguing question is why the company wants to do it. The Smartphone arena is at the moment dominated by a handful of players - Google's Android is making a lot of noise and when the dust settles we'll see where the market puts it (my guess is that it'll do well); Windows Mobile is doing well in the corporate market, so is Symbian, which also has a major toehold in the consumer market alongside the …

An update on the report from the UK’s Financial Times and The Telegraph that Microsoft is all set to buy Yahoo’s search engine division for $20 billion: more media outlets are carrying the story on Sunday night, including Drudge and CNET. But CNBC found an inside source who claims the deal is not complete and may not happen, at least until a new Yahoo CEO is in place. That is said to be a personal objective of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, CNBC reports. This story should be breaking mainstream by Monday morning on the East Coast and I’ll keep an …

I spend a lot of time on this blog talking about specific technology companies that could take off and add some real beef to your financial portfolio (or warn you about tech stocks that could cut into your market gains). What I'd like to do more is to discuss countries where the opportunity to make a buck through good technology plays is on the rise. By that I don't mean established bourses like the U.S. - I'd like to focus on smaller, more developing economies that are leaning on technology to grow their economies. Take South Korea, for example. It's …

Below I’ve condensed today’s big economic news as reported by the Associated Press, with the second quarter gross domestic product numbers coming in less than expected . . . -- Economic growth clocked in at a 1.9 percent pace in the second quarter. That was better than a 0.9 percent pace logged in the first quarter, but was still considered a subpar performance and fell short of economists' forecasts. -- Consumers boosted spending at a 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter, helped by the government's …

Samsung Electronics had good news for the world equity markets, telling investors that it would post a 37% increasing earnings over the first quarter of 2008. The news wasn't so hot at consumer electronics competitor Toshiba Corp., which announced a 95% drop in profits. So why the disparity? Let's tackle Toshiba first. Analysts knew this one was coming, as Toshiba made it plain that its exit from the HD-DVD market would trigger a short-term earnings hit. That's exactly what happened - Toshiba beat feet out of the HD DVD market (which has given way to Blu-Ray DVD technologies in the …
