Links in Google Webmaster Tools

19 Years Ago Dani 0 Tallied Votes 327 Views Share

A recent visit into Google's has brought a new section to my attention which I would imagine would be of much interest to SEOs: Internal and External links.

The table of Internal links seems interesting - a listing of pages on your domain that have links pointing to them from other internal pages. But where I think this section shines is with the external links - Essentially it is a listing of pages within your domain that have links pointing TO THEM from other sites. Not only that, but it is a detailed listing of these external pages along with the date a backlink was last found.

For those of you who are curious exactly how Google calculates the link: data ... this is an eye-opener!

Good catch, — that internal/external link area eventually evolved into the Search Console "Links" report after Google rebranded Webmaster Tools. The modern report is where the old link data lives today and the interface, grouping, and export options are different from the 2007 view. (developers.google.com)

The Links report now separates external and internal data: top linked pages, top linking sites (by root domain), top linking text, and internal link counts. Results are grouped by root domain (protocol and common subdomains are stripped), and the report provides export options including a "Latest links" and a larger sampled export (both useful for audits). The UI also lets inspectors drill down from a target page to the sites/pages that link to it. ()

Important caveats: Search Console is a Google-side view, not a full third-party crawl. The tool shows links Google has discovered and may group or omit entries because of canonicalization, root-domain grouping, or internal filtering. It does not label follow/nofollow on individual links in the UI, and some counts can be lower than older reports because the new report tries to be more accurate and secure. Treat Search Console as a reliable snapshot for validation and triage, but not as a complete backlink inventory. ()

Practical steps when the report seems wrong or throws errors (as noted): verify the correct property type (domain vs URL-prefix), export "Latest links" to check discovery dates, use the URL Inspection tool to confirm whether the linking page is crawlable/indexable (Test Live URL), and check Search Central / Search Console known-issues or community threads for reported outages or bugs. For audits, export and filter by linking domain and anchor text, then cross-check with a crawler or a backlink provider to fill gaps. ()

But exactly this option isn't working fine...

In this article explains it: Error in Google Webmaster Tools

Also there is a online tool to count and view the real amount of pages that links to any site: Who links to me
