For a small, private forum of about 10–15 members there are two sensible routes: a hosted “free” forum service (fast to set up, low technical overhead) or self‑hosting open‑source forum software (more control, no forced ads if paid hosting is used). asked for something simple — either route will work, but the right choice depends on how much control and long‑term reliability are wanted.
As noted, chat-style boards and threaded message boards behave differently. Chat is real‑time and transient; a classic forum is threaded, searchable and better for referenceable discussions. For long‑running technical conversations or tutorials a thread-based engine is usually preferable.
Hosted services (as mentioned by and ) make setup trivial but often display ads, limit exports, or suspend inactive boards. Self‑hosted engines (examples: phpBB, SimpleMachines/SMF, MyBB for lightweight installs; Discourse or Flarum for more modern features) require basic web hosting but give full control: custom domain, backups, privacy settings and no third‑party ads. For a 10–15 person group, a cheap shared host + a one‑click installer will do the job and keeps things private.
Quick practical checklist:
Caution: free hosts can vanish or change terms — keep regular exports/backups and consider a low‑cost paid plan if long‑term stability matters.
Of course there are! I used to use tagboard, www.tag-board.com , they are pretty cool, except you don't have to register (not sure if this is a good or bad thing). Tag-board is actually more like a chat engine, except it doesn't refresh the message box. If you want to pay, you can upgrade it to a chat that auto refreshes. However, you're after a message board. Just go to google and type:
message board free
That's how simple it is kids!!!!
Hint: Google is your friend
