Hello

I have Gateway MX6447. The problem I'm having is the power will short out. I thought it was the adapter so I bought a new one and I still have the same problem. I'm not sure if it's the battery is finally shot or/and if my charger port is shorting out. Does anyone have an idea of what I should do before I go and see how much this fix is going to be at some computer store.

Brief, practical checklist for a Gateway MX6447 power fault — building on the replies from and with safe, ordered steps to narrow whether the problem is the battery, the DC jack/plug, the adapter, or something on the motherboard.

  • Visual and smell check: look for loose/wobbly jack, melted plastic, burn marks or a swollen battery. Any burning smell or visible damage is a sign to stop using the machine and seek repair.
  • Isolation tests (safe, no tools required): remove the battery and plug in the adapter. Note whether the laptop powers on. Then try with adapter removed and battery only. The pattern of results quickly narrows the suspect component.
  • Wiggle test: with the adapter plugged in, gently move the plug and jack while watching the power/charging lights and operation. Intermittent loss when moving the plug usually points to the jack, plug, or cable.
  • Multimeter check (if available): measure the adapter DC output at the barrel while unplugged from the laptop. It should be close to the value printed on the adapter. If it reads zero or far off, the adapter is bad. If adapter voltage is correct but the laptop still won’t run on AC, the problem is internal.
  • Safety and data: back up important files before any repair. If you detect burning, heat, or sparks, disconnect and do not attempt further tests.

Possible next steps: if the problem localizes to the jack or cable, many shops can replace the jack or harness; if the battery fails the battery pack is the usual replacement; an internal short or damaged charging circuit will require board repair or replacement. When taking it in, bring the adapter and battery and tell the technician which of the above tests you performed — that shortens diagnosis time and cost estimates.
