I'm trying to follow the above instructions but if I boot up in safe mode with the command prompt and close the CMD box, control, alt, delete does nothing. Tried several times and several ways. If I boot in other safe modes I cannot search in any of the three available ways. I get the wonderful little puppy search companion but no search box. I'm stuck.

Any suggestions?

Goto Start, Control Panel, Display, Goto settings, Click advanced, then troubleshoot tab, and slide Hardware Acceleration to None. It worked for me. I used to minimize windows and stuff and it'd hang, and before the graphics update, go black screened and restart after 10 seconds.
