hi everybody.. 20gb, 1.79ghz, AMD processor
i have a laptop for more than a year.. just last weeek i experienced a windows problem io think. the laptop kept switching on and off automatically without stopping but with a blue screen. some friends asked to re-install windows xp again and format everything. we did so and everything wenbt well, but yesterday which is a week later the computer freezed while i was online downloading a movie. the screen just freezed and i could not do anything so i had to shut the laptop down. when i started it again.. it was doing the same thing as last week but this time with a black screen. as if the screen was not working. i pressed the reset but but still no changes.
can someone help me with this problem?

Sound like your ram is going bad.

The Presario 2100 series are notorious for motherboard and processor failures. If the RAM checks good and there is no display when hooked up to an external monitor then I would try starting without the battery installed. Next try starting the laptop with only the first memory slot filled (if you have both filled now). Next try reseating the processor and installing a new thermal transfer pad / tape / grease. If that doesn't fix the problem you may have a motherboard going bad.

go to this website (its compaqs website). you'll be able to do a great many things from here including talking to a compaq help and support specialist who will be better off to advise you on your problem with your machine.

in the meantime it could be bad hardware but also dont rule out the possibility of it being a faulty software program;)

if i can find out anything i'll let you know

guess what... a friend of mine has also got a compaq presario 2100 and he's just contacted me with more or less exactly the same problem as what you are experiencing. i therefore have contacted compaq in an attempt to find out the faults. i think these might also apply to your issue

Good and Bad news just got one of this in for repair a couple days ago HP Presario 2100 Athlon 2800+ 2.13GHz 256MB 30GB DVD/CDRW. Same problem bluescreen every 3min-1hr cutoff sometimes by itseft. (The problem is it overheating the heatsink on the cpu itseft the way to fix it is to take apart the whole laptop inculding the display
1. remove all screws on the bottom of the laptops there are two screws hidden where the battery is located at
2. remove the keyboard up right disconnect the ribbion cable
3. remove the screw on top now once keyboard is off
4. removed the display panel two screw on each sides
5. removed heatsink screws there about four screws don't try taking the heatsink off the top haft of the case. once disassemble (THERE GOING TO BE A METAL FILM THAT CONTACTED THE CPU FOR THEMAL CONTACTED REMOVED IT AND THE THEMAL COMPOUND ON THE CPU IT SEFT CLEAN GOOD AND PUT NEW COMPOUND ON CPU ANTEC SILVER 5 IS GOOD PASTE, DON'T USE METAL FILM NO MORE REASSEMBLE SURE BE GOOD AS NEW) The problem is a known one the metal film doesn't contacted the heatsink after a certain time and cause the cpu to overheat not making good contacted. if this doesn't work your cpu is proably damaged. Good luck.

dear janine armitage:

my problem is exactly the same that has happened with ur friends laptop... i cant believe it, its as if it happening again! anyways thank you for ur concern and help.. i have not opened the laptop neither i have done a thing, i shall open the battery today and press the reset button for the same time u where adviced. i was planning to take the laptop to a technition on thursday but as u know that maybe be costly so ill try ur advice. if u have any more things to say please don't hesitate!!
regards

if there isnt any joy with trying what i've said and tried myself then please do take it to a technician. i know they can be costly but if your machine still has any kinds of warranty then you might be ok. check out the website whereby you will find the info about where to take it. if your in the uk then nip it into your local branch of pcworld:)

hi there..
i tried using the steps you have asked me.. well it didnt make any difference. anyways i guess i should just take it to a technition

probably a good idea. after all there could be different reasons for its failing. computers do have their 'different illnesses' just like humans do.

I had a very similar problem
Unbelievably, a screw (very short but with large round head / unlike external screws) was there wandering next to one of the RAM slots, obviously causing random short-cuts. Removed it and problem solved.
Apparently there are dozens of reasons that can cause the 2100 to malfunction, but check for the wandering screw...

So, I have the same problem. Blue screen of death. Reboot Laptop and it resets multiple times. Finally it stops with that but LCD is black. When hooked up to external monitor everything is working fine. Boots and Xp does everything it should. Bad LCD? The only reason I am hesitant to get a new LCD is that I have had an occasional blue screen and when I GOOGLE the error it says its a driver issue with the ATI graphics driver. But on the other hand it won't even display the Bios POst messages before Windows trys to load. So driver is out of the question I assume. Any ideas?
