Some of you may remember when I had to create a new Windows account to get round some major problems I had a while back.
Well I've just had to do the same again because I couldn't open webpages despite running every anti spyware utility under the sun. I had error messages that included "mshtml" and "mshta".

Anyway, I'd be grateful if someone could have a quick look at my hijackthis log to see if there's any nasties on there.

Tried to do a Windows update but was told my serial number is invalid so I can only assume this installation is pirated :(

If this installation is, in fact pirated, we will be unable to help you further.

I know I'm sorry about that but I'm not sure really what to do about that in the short term. I had a friend install windows and never realised it was pirated.

Extract from our forum rules:

Keep it legal Keep it clean and do not post pornographic material or link to it. In addition, do not post anything warez relaetd or related to other illegal acts. This includes tech support troubleshooting pirated software or P2P programs (i.e. Gnutella, Kazaa) used to obtain pirated software. Exceptions are helping to remove spyware or browser hijacks (that may or may not be related to illegal material) from a computer.

Bold mine.

Great. So some twit puts pirated software on my computer without my knowledge and now I can't get help.

You might be able to get help elsewhere, but I'm afraid Forum Rules prohibit it here, as has been stated already. But of course the best help you could get would be to purchase a legitimate copy of Windows XP, format and install it fresh and clean, ensure that your Windows Updates are all installed, and use adequate AntiVirus and Malware detection tools.

If that 'twit' charged you for installing Windows, by the way, you should beat up on him/her! But if it was installed free of charge, then it's rather obvious from the outset that it's not legitimate.
