Hello All,

My computer was recently infected by a virus and all attempts to get rid of it have failed so far. each time I run ESET, my anti virus software, which I have run under normal conditions and in safemode, it reports that it caught s few bugs and cleaned them.

nonetheless, when I boot my computer IE is running, occasionally I will hear adds in the background and my internet searches are being redirected.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Make sure that you restart the computer.

You need to update hijackthis to version 2.0.2. Download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

  • You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
  • You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
  • Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
  • When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

NOTE: If you are unable to complete the ESET scan, please try another from the list below:

Hello Crunchie, thanks for getting back to me,

I had some issues running the Malwarebytes scan. Initially it wouldnt let me install the software itself but if I hit Ctrl/Alt/Del I could see it running on in my processes. I tooled around with it a little and got it to complete the installation but then, when I tried to run it, it wouldn't come up even though, again, I could see it in my processes as mbam.exe.

I wasn’t able to run the ESET scan so I ran housecall, it found a Trojan. I didn’t know how to print a log so I had it delete the trojan. Housecall said it was BKDR_TDSS.SM. I ran the Housecall scan again and nothing came up.

I d/led and installed the recent version of hijackthis, here is the log:

Delete the MBA-M installation file that is on your pc at present.
Go back to download MBA-M again. Click on the link to download it. Select the "Save" option.
When the panel pops up to ask you where you wish to save the file, before choosing where, rename the file.
Once you have saved it, try again to install it. If it installs ok, run it as described above.

If still no good, try this;

Open Device Manager and on the VIEW Tab, select the Show hidden devices option.
Go down to non plug and play drivers and see if there is one called TDSSserv and disable it.

==

Reboot and try MBA-M now.

If still no good, we will try something else.

If any of the above worked, tell me which one.

Option 1: the attempt to install MBA did not work. Similiar to last time, it got as far as extracting the file at which point the program would lock up in the installation process and the only way to break through would be to forcible close it.

Option 2: There is no driver listed as TDSSserv.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must rename combofix BEFORE saving it to your pc.
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

First of, I think my computer is running much better. thank you for taking the time to help me figure this out.

  1. so I was able to run combofix (there were a couple issues that i can go into detail about if you like) and here is the log that was produced:

I also ran housecall, which found nothing, and ESET, which found a couple bugs. neither allowed me to produce logs that I could show here.

finally, I ran MalawareBytes that you originally suggested, here is the log for that:

So, is it time to celebrate yet? how do I know if my computer is actually free of the unpleasantness? is there someway of insuring that these things wont resurface?

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
You must rename combofix BEFORE saving it to your pc.
You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Physically disconnect from the internet.
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Run Combofix ONCE only!!

There are no guarantees that ones PC is absolutely free of unwanted guests, other than having a new hard drive, freshly formatted with a new install of Windows that does not go on the net, or file share :).

Your logs look ok, but do this anyway;

Please use theInternet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on:Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
