While trying to delete, rename, move, or copy and paste a file I get the message:

Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

While trying to use a program called Mboot (which can move or delete, move, etc files that don't start up when booting, I was informed the "File either does not exist or is locked."

I cannot copy the file, while pasting I get the same message when trying to delete it.

This (see screenshot below) is the file and its location (I changed it to a WMP file as many other types but notice it isn't recognized as such).

This file behaves the same way in both locations, the "shortcut" on my desktop (shown below) and in C:Documents and SettingsXaminorDesktop.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode then deleting the file?

start > run > type "msconfig" > BOOT.INI tab > check the /safeboot box > Apply > restart

to boot normally, uncheck that box. if this doesn't work, trying using pocket killbox.

Yes, I tried rebooting in Safe Mode. I'll try pocket killbox and re-post.

Edit:

With Pocket Killbox I got the message "this file does not seem to exist."

^^^^

with KB you have to enter the exact location of it

I did, and I actually clicked on the file when I got to the path.

Anybody know anything about this?

This file behaves the same way in both locations, the "shortcut" on my desktop (shown below) and in C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor\Desktop.

C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor\Desktop and "my desktop" are the same location; the file isn't a shortcut. ;)

The "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk" message, combined with the fact that it's 0 KB in size, would most likely suggest that the file and/or its entry in your filetable is corrupt.

If you have a disk/filesystem repair utility such as Norton Disk Doctor, I'd run that and see what it comes up with. If you don't have a third-party program like Norotn, run Windows' disk checker:

Open My Computer, right-click on your C: drive, and choose Properties. Go to the Tools tab in the Properties window and click on "Check now..."

Thanks DMR, I'll give that a shot. I found it funny that it was 0 KB as well.

Also, is there anyway to remove programs from my "Add Remove Programs" when they are already uninstalled?

... I found it funny that it was 0 KB as well.

Yeah- that's one of the clues that something isn't right with the file or its entry in your Master File Table.

Also, is there anyway to remove programs from my "Add Remove Programs" when they are already uninstalled?

Yes, as a matter of fact there is. It's a Registry edit, and the instructions from Microsoft can be found here.

Ok, I did what you asked and the corrupt file is still there.

Did the filesystem check(s) report anything in terms of errors?

Try this:

Reboot the computer into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". You get to that boot option by hitting the F8 key just as the system is starting up. You must hit F8 before the Windows startup/logo screen appears, so it's a good idea to just start repeatedly tapping F8 when the computer begins to reboot.

Once at the command prompt:

- Type the following command and hit Enter to get in to your Desktop directory:

cd C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor\Desktop

- Once in the desktop directory, run this command to see if the system recognizes the file:

dir /a ca58*

- If that returns a listing for the CA5803DL file, type:

attrib -h -r -s ca5803dl

- after that, try to delete the file with this command:

del ca5803dl

Let us know if that works or not.

After this step:

"- Once in the desktop directory, run this command to see if the system recognizes the file:

dir /a ca58*"

Volume in Drive C has no label

Volume serial number is ****-****

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor

File not Found

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor

File not Found

The above entry indicates that you were in the C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminordirectory, not the C:\Documents and Settings\Xaminor\Desktop directory. Read and follow the directions in my last post again carefully.

Edit: NM I wasn't in safe mode, I'll get back to you.

OK- we'll be here.

The second screenshot shows the file listed by the dir command, but it also shows that you can't delete it with the del command. :(

The file is almost cetainly corrupt, but I need to log off for a few hours and won't be able to post further suggestions until later today.

K, thanks. Can I delete it from the registry, and if so, would you like to see a hi-jak this log?

Unfortunately, information about your filesystem (the names, sizes, locations, creation dates, etc. of files and folders) is one of things that Windows does not store in the Registry, so there's no Registry edit that you can do to remove the file.

Since you said that did have virus/spyware infections, we'd certainly take a look at a HJT log if you want to post one, but I doubt it will help you get rid of the corrupt file.

So do I have to re-install Windows?

Here is my HJT log.

So do I have to re-install Windows?

Unless you do a totally clean reinstall (reformat, etc.), the problem might persist. Since Windows has lost its full association with the file, it's difficult to say exactly what would happen if you did a "repair" or "in-place" install, but you can try it if you want (back up you drive first just to be safe).

Did you run the filesystem check? If so, did it find any errors?
